Hey, everyone!

I think it's finally time to write a trip report of our October 2016 visit to Disneyland Resort in Anaheim! Hopefully, it won't be too outdated being seven months ago :sad1: and those who read this report may find it interesting/entertaining/helpful!

Introduction

Karen (that's me on the left!) and Nikki (DFi, right) - we're both 30-yrs-old and live in Rotorua, New Zealand :)
3b38f6d5-1ed7-4286-bd14-212393130777

We've been together for 9 years after meeting at university in Nottingham, UK, and we moved to NZ in 2015.

I'm a long-time Disney Parks fan, but Nikki took some convincing to even set foot in a Disney Park! That all changed when we visited WDW in 2013 with my parents and Nikki has become (almost) as obsessed as me!

We now enjoy keeping up-to-date with all things Disney together and planning our next Disney adventure!

The Trip

This was our first visit to DLR and formed the first five days of our three-week southwest USA road trip.

We also tagged on an extra DLR day to the end of our trip to finish our holiday as we started, in our happy place!

Day 1 - Sunday, 16th October 2016 (New Zealand)

We knew our first day was going to be a long one, but we were excited to get to the airport and start our adventure and made it up to Auckland International Airport (AKL) before check-in had opened! We had dropped our moggy off at the cattery the previous day too, so that was one less thing to stress over the morning of our departure (photo below of Reece!). The drive from our home in Rotorua to Auckland took just under 3-hours and we parked in the long-term car park just opposite the international terminal.

We had managed to book a very reasonably priced direct flight with American Airlines from AKL to LAX for US$630 each (return) in March 2016 when AA announced they were going to be flying directly between the USA and New Zealand.

When check-in opened we dropped our bags off and got our boarding tickets printed from the self-service machines and headed through airport security and grabbed some lunch in the terminal. I had an avocado bagel and Nikki had a Full-English breakfast (bacon, sausage, eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes and toast), which you'll see is quite typical of most of our meals! Nikki will go for the meat-heavy option and I'm the plant eater :thumbsup2 I like to think it evens us out!

After walking around the terminal wasting some time, our gate number appeared and we headed over to the gate for boarding. We were flying on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and although I'm no plane buff, it was a nice plane! We took off 15-minutes late at 2.35 pm and we were on our way...

Only 12-hours 5 minutes to go until we touch down in LAX!

Day 1 - Sunday, 16th October 2016 (Los Angeles - Anaheim - DLR)

We made it! Our flight landed at 6.40 am on the same day (time warp!) and we were through customs and immigration and bag collection within 25-minutes! :thumbsup2

We managed to order an UBER on my iPhone and arranged to be picked up at LAX and go to Anaheim and Park Vue Inn. Unfortunately, being UBER rookies we were stood in the wrong location for the driver to collect us! A bit embarrassing, but we found our guy and we were on our way!

We arrived at Park Vue Inn at 8.45 am, but we were too early to get into our room, the Deluxe King Jacuzzi Room (treat yo self!), so we dropped our bags off in the hotel's bag storage room, freshened up in the reception area bathroom and headed straight to the esplanade! No 12-hour flight was stopping us from getting into the parks as soon as humanly possible! Our thinking was that we should just keep going otherwise the jet lag/time difference would hit us, which was, of course, an easy excuse to get into the parks and start making good use of our 5-Day Park Hopper!

So we headed up to the bag check area, only a few minutes walk from Park Vue Inn - such a great location, and waited for 45-minutes to go through security. This was the longest time we ever had to wait to go through bag check and I'm guessing this is because it was a Sunday?!

After getting through security we exchanged our aRES travel E-Tickets for 'real' paper tickets at the ticket booth. We were so nervous the whole five days that we'd end up tearing them or getting them wet, so we treated them with lots of care!

It's 9.45 am and we're finally in Disneyland Park! Only 3-hours after our flight landed!

First things first, we get our '1st Visit' buttons, a rainbow Mickey pin and Nikki her Maleficent ears and we have a photo in front of the castle! We're both so happy to finally be here and in the original park where Walt set foot!

28rnoyo.png

Next stop was a caffeine fix at Starbucks and we then headed to Jungle Cruise, which is our first ride tradition and my favorite attraction at WDW. We only waited for 5-minutes and it was great, as usual!

We decided to walk around the park next to get our bearings and we both agreed it feels similar in layout to the Magic Kingdom. We grabbed a Mickey Pretzel (so good!) by Toon Town and headed in there to have a look. It was a total throwback for me, but Nikki wasn't too impressed, so went back and rode It's A Small World, which is annoyingly cute!

f3gmxj.png

Nikki got a hot dog and Coke (she loves the fountain Coke in the US!) at this point and the park was starting to fill up and there was limited seating available around Main Street, so we walked around the park a bit more, but both agreed we were beginning to feel the burn from the flight and the Californian heat!

Over in Frontierland, we scored a Fastpass for BTMRR as a family didn't need their passes any longer! We rode that straight away and loved it, lots of fun! Next up, ice-cream! Unfortunately, though, Mickey Bars were out of stock and we were told to try again in a few days - gutted!!!

alizkm.png

We decided to leave the park at this point as it was getting pretty busy, but before we did, we got a Fastpass for Space Mountain later that day :thumbsup2 We walked into Downtown Disney to waste some time and then headed back up to Park Vue Inn at around 2.00 pm, an hour before check-in at 3.00 pm, but luckily our room was ready!

The room was very nice, spacious and spotlessly clean and my room request for a room at the back of the building on the second floor was granted, so we were in a quiet spot. We freshened up but were very much feeling tired at this point, so we chilled out in the room until about 4.00 pm.

Before heading back to Disneyland Park we stopped into Cold Stone Creamery at the hotel, and without a doubt, this started what became a nightly ritual for the remainder of our trip! I LOVE peanut butter and the peanut butter waffle cone became a staple in my diet for the next few days! Although I learned the hard way that portion sizes in the USA are bigger than I can handle, even for PB ice-cream!

3518uf5.png

After the ice-cream, we walked (rolled) ourselves back into Disneyland and used the Space Mountain Fastpass, which was pretty much a walk-on. I'll try and not do too much comparison between DLR and WDW, but we both agreed that we enjoyed DL's Space Mountain more than WDW's! It seemed more thrilling and it was nice being able to sit next to each other.

29nz6kl.png

After Space Mountain, we needed a more sedate attraction, so grabbed a Dole Whip to share (I'm not a massive fan...don't lynch me!) and watched the birds do their thing in Enchanted Tiki Room. Again, it was special to be in an attraction that Walt had been into and thinking about that history made the experience even more special and memorable.

nvejwp.png

We decided to go onto Jungle Cruise again and had a great Skipper who was very funny and entertaining, with a good mix of the 'standard' jokes and their own personal touch - I wish I had got their name to let Guest Relations know how good they were!

We had dinner at Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe - I had the Grilled Vegetable and Whole-Grain Salad and Nikki a Roast Beef sandwich, which we both enjoyed and thought was good value. We sat outside the cafe for some time enjoying our food and just soaking in the atmosphere and the view of the castle :goodvibes

After dinner, I took some photos...

Next, we grabbed a Fastpass for Indiana Jones Adventure and then at around 9.00 pm went down to get a spot along Main Street for the 'Fantasy in the Sky' fireworks at 9.30 pm. This would be our only chance to see them as they were just showing on Saturday and Sunday nights during our visit. We're glad we saw the fireworks, but neither of us was overly impressed as it was short and just had a couple of backing songs.

After the fireworks, we used our Fastpass for Indiana Jones Adventure, which was a first time ride for us both and lots of fun! The line area and actual ride theming and design were excellent! We walked over to BTMRR next to see the wait time, but it was closed, this was at 10.00 pm.

Instead, we decided to finish off the night with a visit to Candy Palace and Candy Kitchen on Main Street where Nikki got a Mickey Rice Krispie Treat and I a Chocolate Chip Cookie from Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe. We stopped to eat these on the benches at the top of Main Street by the Railway Station and looked down towards the castle - it was very picturesque and romantic and the perfect end to our first day!

We walked back to the hotel after 14-hours in DL and having walked 30, 000 steps - what a first day and start to our DLR adventure!

Day 2 - Monday, 17th October 2016 (DL and DCA)

As early morning risers and rope droppers, it was an early start for us around 6.00 am! Plus, we were really excited to begin our second day and visit DCA for the first time and Cars Land of course!

We had breakfast at the hotel around 7.00 am, which was complimentary and this was served buffet style in a room above the reception area. There is a decent amount of seating inside and out and you can see the top of Space Mountain from the courtyard! I had mini bagels with peanut butter and freshly chopped fruit and Nikki had bacon, eggs, and toast.

348loyd.png

After breakfast, we headed to the esplanade and DCA! We got into DCA shortly after rope drop and walked around to get our bearings, just as we had done in DL. Unfortunately, it was drizzling a bit and hadn't brought our rain jackets on our trip because it doesn't rain in California or the southwest right?! We dipped out of the rain and went to watch the sneak preview of Moana, which was being shown in the It's Tough To Be A Bug theater. This was pretty good, lots of jabs in the back and spraying effects...shame it wasn't the actual bug show though!

We carried on into A Bug's Land and went on Heimlich's Chew Chew Train and were probably the only adults without kids on the train, which was a little awkward! We also went onto Tuck and Roll's Drive 'Em Buggies, which again, I think we were the only ones without kids!

During our walk around earlier, we had grabbed a Fastpass for Soarin' and our window had now opened to return for that. We love Soarin' in WDW and the DCA version was great, especially as this had a new/different film to the one we'd seen in WDW in 2014.

10pdl6d.png

After Soarin' we hopped over the DL. The ability to hop between parks was a highlight of our trip! The ease of this and being able to grab Fastpasses across the two parks by only walking between them was great!

We went over to Haunted Mansion now and the exterior holiday makeover was amazing, as was the interior makeover too! I took so many photos of the outside area it drove Nikki mad! :teeth: We loved seeing Jack, Sally and Oogie Boogie and all the other smaller details throughout the ride.

There was no more rain by this point and our lunch reservation at 1.30 pm at Carnation Cafe was near so we headed over a bit earlier and were seated 10-minutes before our booking time - score! The meal was really good and great value too; I had the Chef's Vegan Burger with Fries and Nikki had the Chicken-fried Chicken and we both had All-Natural Lemonade. We'd definitely recommend Carnation Cafe as a solid table service for homestyle options, which are filling and good value.

rr5j84.png

After lunch, I took a few photos of the goodies in Candy Palace and Candy Kitchen and we then went over to Pirates of the Caribbean, which we loved! We both agreed there was more detail than the WDW POTC and this was a longer boat ride.

33e0oz6.png

k1dj6u.png

We walked back over to DCA now to see if California Screamin' was available for a Fastpass, but it had been down since 10.00 am :( So, instead, we went onto Triton's Carosaul, Mickey's Fun Wheel (the swinging gondolas!) and Silly Symphony Swings. We had grabbed a Fastpass earlier in the day for Radiator Springs Racers and our window was coming up. The Fastpass line was quite long, but it was so much fun! The ride itself is great, with lots of detail to the design and theming and the same can said for Cars Land, which is wonderful too and very immersive.

zo73tk.png

Ice-cream was calling my name, and we managed to get hold of a Mickey Premium Bar in DCA!!! My day was made! I love those things! We sat down along the Pixar Play Parade route and enjoyed our ice-creams and watched the parade, which was really good fun! I'm sad we didn't get to see it again in fact.

3535yli.png

After the parade ended, we could see California Screamin' was back up running so we went over to try our luck, but no Fastpasses, standby was 60-minutes and Single Rider wasn't available, so we decided to skip it for now and try another day. We strolled along Paradise Pier and grabbed a Fastpass for Goofy's Sky School and then went onto Golden Zephyr, which didn't go very high, but we were able to 'tick it off'.

For an early dinner/snack, Nikki got a corn dog (never had one before and not hugely impressed!) and we then headed to Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid, which Nikki loves! It's very cute sitting in the clams and we always sing-along!

We used our Fastpass for Goofy's Sky School and it was not what we expected!!! A lot more jerky with stomach-churning drops than what we thought it would be and we couldn't put our arms up, and instead screamed the whole way!

Whilst waiting for World of Color to begin we walked around the shops along Paradise Pier and tried on the hats! Here's Nikki rocking the Mad Hatter...

b63q68.png

World of Color was absolutely AMAZING! Hands down the best Disney show we've seen and my new favorite haven taken pole position from Fantasmic! Not ashamed to admit I got choked up twice, once at the Wall-E and EVE section as this film holds a special place for Nikki and I and during the Pocahontas segment as I love the music from that film! We didn't have a Fastpass spot for WOC this night, but we still got a decent view and were stood by the bridge going into Paradise Pier. On the way out of DCA, I took a quick photo of Walt and Mickey...

2rfu2dd.png

To end the night, we had ice-cream at Cold Stone Creamery, a coffee waffle cone this time. There was a long line, but it was so worth it! I reckon Peanut Butter is still the go-to option though! Back in the hotel room, we could hear the Halloween Party fireworks and headed outside to see them a few of them go off. We didn't want to spoil the finale for ourselves though as we were heading to the Halloween Party on Wednesday night (which turned out to be a bust anyway...more on that later!).

Early start planned for tomorrow, as it's our Magic Morning at DL!

Day 3 - Tuesday, 18th October 2016 (MM at DL, DCA)

An early start for us with the alarm sounding off at 5.45 am ready for our Magic Morning! We definitely leaped up with a spring in our step though, I mean we're at Disney after all! The Magic Morning begins from 8.00 - 9.00 am so we wanted to give ourselves a head start and get to the esplanade before 8.00 am to take full advantage of this extra hour!

We grabbed breakfast at the hotel again around 7.00 am. Nikki made herself a waffle in the waffle irons and I had a peanut butter toasted sandwich - breakfast of champions!

We headed straight to the esplanade shortly after breakfast and were waiting in line at the DL entrance by 7.35 am. We were in DL by 7.50 am and headed down Main St. but kept at a rope by Refreshment Corner until 8.00 am. The CM's kindly told everyone not to run, so instead, lots of people skipped! We took the power walk approach, or the 'London Walk' as Nikki called it from her city commuter days, and high tailed it straight through the castle to Peter Pan's Flight! Luckily, this was basically a walk on and Nikki loves this ride, so a win win!

Next, we did Single Rider on Matterhorn Bobsleds, which is good fun and the Yeti is cool! After the bobsleds, we rode Snow White's Scary Adventures and then waited in line for Mr. Toad's Wild Ride for 15-mins before being told it had broken down! We decided to ditch and grabbed a Fastpass for Space Mountain instead. As we were in Tomorrowland now, we went on Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters - Nikki beat me (as usual!)...my excuse is that I get a dud gun each time!

Next up, Astro Orbiter where we shared a rocket and found it to be a tight squeeze! Maybe it isn't meant for two adults?! :rotfl:

Coffee break now! Nikki grabbed us a much-needed caffeine fix at Starbucks on Main St. and I headed down to Haunted Mansion to see what the Fastpass window was looking like - the return time was good, so I grabbed a couple of those for later that afternoon.

After refueling with a coffee, we returned to Tomorrowland to ride Autotopia. We both had a giggle at this and I joked that it was good practice for the upcoming driving on the right part of our holiday!

Our Fastpass window for Space Mountain had opened now, so we headed over there to find it was down when we arrived! Ah well, we'll return later and try our luck then.

Next, we hopped over to DCA to get a Fastpass for WOC and were able to get one in the Yellow section. As I wrote up from Day 2 of our TR, WOC really blew me away and I couldn't wait to see it again that night, and this time with a better view, hopefully.

We headed out of DCA as quickly as we arrived, but before we did, we got a Fastpass for RSR for 5.00 - 6.00 pm.

Back over in DL now and time for our Haunted Mansion Fastpass. We both absolutely love the holiday makeover! The decorations and music are awesome and I wish they did this in WDW! We got off the Haunted Mansion by midday, so walked across to Tarzan's Treehouse to waste a bit of a time before our ADR at Cafe Orleans.

We were seated in the outdoor area by around 12.45 pm. Nikki had the Braised Beef Crêpe and I had Pommes Frites and the La Salade de Maison, all was very good, especially the Pommes Frites, which were everything everyone had said they'd be...and more! For drinks, we had a Coke and Pomegranate Lemonade. Whilst we were eating we could see Jack and Sally in the courtyard opposite, which was very cool and a nice view to have whilst you're having lunch!

After lunch, we grabbed a BTMRR Fastpass and then headed back over to Space Mountain to try and use our earlier Fastpass. Luckily it was back up and running and we were on within 10-minutes after the CM happily honored our earlier Fastpass. Such good fun and bless Nikki, it makes her eyes water!

A trip to Fantasyland next for Alice in Wonderland, which Nikki loved and said, for her, it was on par with Peter Pan's Flight...I'm not convinced!

Back over to Frontierland for our BTMRR Fastpass. Loved the runaway train and it was hands up the whole way round!

We decided to head out of the parks now and walked into DTD where we spent a bit too much money in World of Disney (it's too easy!) and we found WALL-E and Eve mugs! We'd seen these mugs online a few months before our trip and were so excited to try and get them as WALL-E holds a special place for us a couple so this set would suit us perfectly!

Whilst in DTD we also had a look around the Lego Store and the Fossil shop as Nikki was interested in a watch. We also popped into the Grand Californian to have a nosey around the lobby - very impressive!

We returned to our own hotel after this and dropped our shopping off and relaxed for a little bit until 5.30 pm when we returned to DCA to use our RSR Fastpass. We were in a red car this time and in the front row! Lot's of fun and the theming is exceptional throughout.

Staying in Cars Land, we rode Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters and Mater's Junkyard Jamboree, the latter of which was great fun, but we weren't too impressed with Luigi's.

Headed over to Paradise Pier next for California Screamin', which had a 15-min standby wait. Luckily, we had only just walked into the line and the CM then closed off the ride entry for the night - this was at 7.15 pm. We love roller coasters and this was our first time on CS, but it wouldn't be our last!

With giddy legs, we went over to the WOC Yellow section Fastpass area. Again, WOC was fantastic and being in the Fastpass area that night, I felt our view and experience was much more immersive than the previous night. Got choked up again too!

After WOC, we hopped back across to DL as it was staying open until 10.00 pm that night. First off, we checked Indiana Jones Adventure, but that had no Single Rider line open and BTMRR was a 30-min standby wait, and neither of us felt like waiting for too long at this point in the night. Instead, we went over to Fantasyland and rode Pinocchio's Daring Journey and as it was now running, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. Enjoyed both, but Pinocchio's Daring Journey is a bit dark, especially for children!

Feet were killing us by this point, so we decided to call it a night...

On our way out of Fantasyland and in the front of the castle, a couple got engaged! It was so romantic and we all clapped! A great end to the night!

Back at the hotel, and as standard, we got an ice-cream at Cold Stone Creamery! I had a Waffle Cone with Chocolate Fudge Brownie Batter with Reece's Cups mixed in and it was heaven on earth! Nikki had the Cake Batter flavor with sprinkles.

We hit 30,000 steps today and our legs were feeling it...but it was so worth it! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

BRING ON DAY 4!

Great start to the TR! Those are awesome prices for flights - Mrs McN is a teacher and we have two school kids so are stuck with brutal airfares. Still, we've drunk enough Mickey Kool Aid to not put us off - 4th visit this year and we are doing the Disney Double with 2 days DLR and 9 days WDW:sunny:

Good run with immigration& customs too - we have had a couple of horror arrivals, nudging 90 minutes, not nice!

Looking forward to the rest of the report!

Thank you! I can sympathise with the school holiday airfare prices as I used to work in a school and got stung badly when we went to WDW in August 2014! But like you, we've also drunk enough of the Mickey Kool Aid to not be too put off! Your upcoming trip sounds great - both in the same trip!

I think our time in immigration was sped up as they've installed new self-service machine, which gives you a 'receipt' with your details and photos and you take that to the immigration office, who still asks the same questions, but it did seem to speed up the whole process hugely.

Apparently, they've also installed them at MCO now, so we're hoping for a faster immigration process down there too, otherwise, it can be a long wait as you've experienced!
