Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes. She is a great lady. She had a rough start, her mother died when she was young and her father married what she calls a witch with a capital B! :rotfl: She had very much a Cinderella childhood. She married young to get away, and while she loved her husband, he was a difficult man as well. He died when they were young, less then 40, and left her with nothing (no insurance, etc.) She got her first job and while she never had much, she was always happy.

One of the greatest things we did was set up the video camera and justhit record. She talked, we listened, we asked her questions. And it is all recorded for us all to cherish. She is very funny, my DH has 2 favorite things he always tells people about her. One ws back when we were first dating. She caught us kissing and she said "you're playing with FIRE!" Something about how she said it, and the fact that she caught us off guard just was so hysterical! We all still laugh about that. A few years ago I found a bumper sticker with that saying and got it for my DH for Christmas. We were all cracking up remembering that day.

Another funny thing was when we did that taping of her. DH asked her to tell our girls about dating back in hr day. He said, "what did you do on dates?" He meant, where did you go and stuff but she came back with "If you forgive me for not answering, I'll forgive you for asking." :rotfl: Oh my gosh how we cracked up!!!

She is still very much enjoying life, so it would be great if she made it to 100. She goes shopping and out to lunch every Thursday with my grandma, plays Bingo 3 days a week and goes to church on Sunday with my grandparents then back to their house for lunch and an afternoon of Deal or No Deal that she really looks forward to. She used to make afghans, she can't anymore cause she eyes aren't so good but we all have piles of beautiful blankets including for my girls--baby ones that were theirs and new ones for their kids. And she made a white one for each of them to get when they get married. She does however always say she has lived a great life, she is ready when the Good Lord is ready for her. She lost a son about a year ago, and of course her husband and mom so she has loved ones to look forward to seeing. But for now we are really happy we still have her, she is wonderful!

I am sure she had a great day, we will be calling her when the rest of the family is here to say hello. She wanted to go to the Olive garden for lunch, then home for a nap cause it is Bingo night. :goodvibes And of course, she wanted her chocolate cupcakes that my grandma always makes her. Eats one, freezes the rest and eats one a day till they are gone.

Everytime we see her we know it could be the last, but then again it is like that with anyone. But everytime we see her we are so happy to again. I hope to get to see her again soon. Winters are tough, we have to drive through Buffalo, Erie and Cleveland to get home, not an easy drive in the winter, but as soon as we can we will again. I hope she will be there, but if not, how blessed we were to have had her healthy and happy for so long. :lovestruc

Happy Birthday to your Great-gran!

And she is very lucky to have family who care so much about her. My mother works at a nursing home- and she sees too many elderly whose family couldn't care less about them. You are an awesome great-granddaughter!!!!

Aww, thanks. I have done some voluntering in nursing homes, it is heartbreaking. She is very blessed to have my grandma and grandpa. They do a lot for her. They moved her to be a few minutes away from them about 20 years ago and they spoil her.

Something else I forgot to mention about her that is impressive. Last year she fell. Granted, it was a carpeted area, but she fell all the same. She didn't want to bother anyone (they have emergency pull strings in her senior community she could have pulled.) She waited till my grandparents got home several hours later and called them. Well of course my grandparents rushed her to the ER. She was banged up but didn't break a thing! The doctor said he never would have believed that someone her age could fall and not break anything. Good genes I guess. My grandma fell (she is 73) the day after Christmas down half a flight of stairs. She needed 8 stitches in her hand she cut open, and was pretty sore, but she didn't break anything either. Her doctor told her she was very lucky, she told him about her mom the year before and he was amazed.

Thanks everyone for your sweet words. We called her this evening to sing her Happy Birthday. I am sad to say she didn't get our package in time (I have been sick so I had DH send it later then I shoudl have) but I know she will be excited to get it tomorrow.

That is so funny! Sounds like she had a good sense of humor as well!

WOW! My granny never drove a day in her life. When I was learning to drive 20 years ago (she was 79) my grandma took me out on some country roads to teach me. One day she took granny with us and begged her to try but she was too scared. She said ladies in her day didn't drive and she had gone along this long she wasn't about to start. But wow, still driving at 99...that is something!

Thanks for sharing such a nice story and making me smile. Happy Birthday wishes to your great grandma!

As soon as you can transfer the video, if on tape, to DVD. Tape does deteriorate. As a matter of fact so will DVD, but at a much slower rate. As time goes by recopy them.

:headache: Ugg, leanred that the hard way with my wedding video (hoping to get it restored.) Thankfully our new video camera records onto chips, and it is backed up on our hard drive and to CD. Very, very good reminder though. :thumbsup2
