Generally speaking I am a wash and wear gal (even washed my wedding dress in my machine!) Hate the expense, hassle, and smell of dry cleaning. I wash LOTS of items labeled dry clean only in my top loader on cool delicate.

Fell in love with a dress at WHBM and bought it even though it said dry clean only. It is poly/spandex and generally I would have thought nothing about throwing it in the machine. However, clerk mentioned to be careful when steaming because it will get wavy if it gets too wet. She said "since it is like taffeta".

Personally I don't think it is anything like taffeta. It had some makeup stains on the neckline and I used wet washcloth and oxi clean to remove. They came out fine and collar is clean and not wavy or watermarked.

Do you think it is the heat from steamer that would damage rather than the actual water (break down spandex maybe)? What might I be missing that makes this garment dry clean only?

Here's what I would do. I would wash it in cold water in my washing machine and hang it up to dry in the shower. Then you won't have to worry about heat. If you absolutely have to iron it, then just do it on low heat.

As for the water, I doubt that it can't get wet. If that's true, hope you don't get caught in a rain storm. Besides, it's polyester/spandex...I would just wash it but that's me.
