a 50 in Art - the other grades were the major subjects - science, math, eng & social studies - which i thought was darn good
these are the marks on the interim report

sooooo what does DH do? takes the tv away until report cards come out Apr 8!

Perhaps maybe you can spend that TV time doing arts and crafts projects?

Couldn't hurt!

I wonder why he got a 50 in Art? Is he not participating? I taught students art several years ago, and I never had any students fail. Nor did I ever have any that didn't want to participate. Have you talked to the art teacher?

Seems like your DH wants your son to pay more attention to studying than TV. Not a bad thing.

Is art not his "thing"? Is he just blowing it off thinking it's less important than English, Math etc? Will this low grade in Art force him to stay back or go to summer school?? What are the conseqeunces of it.

I kind of understand that art may not be one of the "main" school subjects (like Math, English, History etc), but school is also for for more than just learning the basics. When he's in the work world, if he gets an assignemnt he doesn't like, he's not going to be able to say "This is lame I don't want to do it".

Ya I think that may be his attitude "Its not a major so why bother?"
I picked him up a few books and a book on tape to help pass the wknd (which he should be doing anyways).

There seem to be a lot of assumptions that the 50 was the result of shirking. When I was in school I was a straight A student except for shop, which I got a D in. It wasn't for lack of trying. I just had no aptitude for it. This could be the same thing. I just don't think it's fair to punish a child for one bad mark whose basis is pretty subjective.

If he is shirking, certainly the behaviour should be corrected, but shouldn't he also be rewarded for all the subjects he did well in?

Ciao,
Mort.

Now if I remember right, didnt your child have a bad grade in another fine arts subject, was it creative writing or poetry?

some kids, especially boys aren't hard wired like that..

They dont see a point so they dont care.

A book on tape for art??? Does it instruct him on how to color?
