95 South To WDW

When We go in late October We will go down Delaware's route 1 and pick up US 13 below Dover's nascar track, cross the Bay Bridge tunnel to I-64 east to exit 291b onto US 17 south to US 64 east to 95 south at exit 138 of I-95 this takes about 7 hrs (375 miles) this is a nice easy drive, No white knuckles like on I-95. All but 6 miles of this route is 4 lanes. The first 4 miles of US 17 is 2 lanes and both tunnels are 2 lanes. If traffic is perfect on I-95 that same exit takes just over 6 hrs to get to (350 miles). Traffic is never perfect on I-95. Our last trip it took 11 hrs to get to that same Exit. All of the delay was around the Baltimore construction and Washington at the Wilson bridge construction and the first 40 miles of Virginia (too many cars not enough lanes and there is 5 or 6 lanes going south).

Some clarification for Jacksonville FL, as you approach the airport there are three routes South, 95 through town, 295 West of town, and 9A East of town.

I prefer 9A (which is soon to be renumbered to 295) but if it is a really quiet time 95 is probably as good.

As you approach Sanford 417 is a good (although not cheap) alternative to I-4, which I pretty much refuse to drive anymore.

Thanks for this info. We're driving a different way this trip, just to see some different scenery. Instead of going straight down 65 and then through Nashville, Atlanta, etc., we're going 64 and then through Asheville, Savannah and Jacksonville to St. Augustine for our first night/day in Florida before heading over to WDW. I'm going to print this so I'll be sure to have it with me. I think we may get to Jacksonville around afternoon rush hour so we will probably take your advice and do the 9A East of town. I had looked at a map and wondered which route would be best so I appreciate your post.

I was also trying to figure whether we would be better off doing I-4 or a toll road. We're not fond of I-4 either.

I will be joining the list of folks driving to WDW .... I haven't done it since I was a kid... but in Feb 2010 DH says he wants to drive (extra room for the golf clubs and such). I am kind of nervous about driving in the winter thru New York and PA but I think once we get thru those two states it should be okay. Our plan is to leave about midnight and drive thru the night.... hopefully getting us to VA by early Satruday morning.... and on to WDW by late Sat night..... for the trip back DH wants to stop along the way.... maybe in GA or VA for the night and play a round of golf.... any suggestions from anyone??????
