Maybe I have the wrong message board. I am going to drive to Florida for the first time from New England in late December. Does anyone know of a good message board to get tips for snowbirds. For example, hotels along 95 south where your car is safe overnight. Snowbirds tend to carry household items ( ex.TV ) in their car which could be somewhat visible in an SUV. Also, how do first time snowbirders figure out where to reserve their 1st and 2nd nights or do they just forget reservations and wing it.

There is a thread on the transportation boards for people driving that I frequent for our trips. We always drive down from Mass. We went last December and drove as far as Fayetteville North Carolina. We do make reservations for the night in advance, but we have driven down many times and we know about how far is far enough for the day. When we first drove down we did not make reservations and just stopped driving when we got tired and found a place to stay. Definately check out the transportation board and look at the thread "For those Folks Driving", there is alot of helpful info and links for websites with 95 south info regarding tolls, lodging, gas prices, food, etc. It should help you out. Happy Planning :sunny:

I would think that doing that much travel would also require a GPS unit. I have a handheld map unit that is several years old (you get updates from company on the internet) and they will show you the restraunts, gas stations, etc. by moving you curser over top of the exit number along major highways plus help you find your way and let you know exactly where you are at all times in case you needed emergency help!!!! Nice tool for extreme travelling and not real expensive. Hope this helps out.

We drive to WDW yearly. We tend to stay at either Fayetteville, NC or a bit further to Florence, SC. Both locations have excellent choices of clean one night motels and restaurants. Check the Choicehotels chain for hotels pix and amenities. The price for one nighter was that bad also. We paid about $55.00 +tax. w/free breakfast and internet at the Comfort Inn @ Fayetteville.
I wouldn't worry about the SUV. We packed the SUV w/bags and bags of goods from WDW and Outlet stores on our return drive. No problem for us.
The only thing we didn't leave inside the vehicle was the fudge we got from WDW.
