...............

no, that is not true at all.

Have her contact the local Social Security office. In my experience with my parents, they are actually pretty good at explaining benefit options available.

I haven't heard that either. Wouldn't hurt to call. We had to have a appointment for our developmentally delayed son 1 year. The lady was very rude. After a few choice words for her I got someone much nicer.

I don't see how having it deducted would mattter. She needs the money now so why not? Unless she is penilized for it but that doesn't make and sense.

I have not heard such a thing either. A few points though to keep in mind. Not everyone gets approved the first time around. Even for obvious conditions. Also, it takes 6 months before you start receiving benefits so she shouldn't count on the money right away.
On the plus side, they could retro-active her disability. When I applied and recieved mine, they actually determined me to be disabled for a year and a half PRIOR to applying and retro-actived that. I ended up getting a lump sum amount for that entire time. That was a nice suprise and I didn't realize that was even something they did.

They Social Security website has a lot of info and she can even apply online.

I've never heard of such a thing..

My guess is that she (or somebody) is confusing it with the reduced retirement benefit that is available if you stop working before your full retirement age.

Social Security Disability is a different program.

Everybody told us to be prepared to have to "fight tooth and nail" to get Dad qualified -- but our experience was pretty good. The Doctor filled out a couple of forms certifying his inability to work -- and that was pretty much it.

This is great! I can't wait to tell her.. :) She does have a DH that works, but without her income it's really a stretch for them.. Even if it takes awhile, I'm sure it would help them out immensely.. :flower:

does she have long term disability? The reason I ask- SSI will changet that amount...take the following for instance

$1500 long term dis from work- PRIOR to the start of SSI

start SSI- after 6 month wait
$1000 SSI
$500 LTD from work

total is still 1500 but the disability insurance payment is cut, due to the SSI payments...

Maybe thats what she meant?

Even though all the above replies are correct (and as far as work DI, if integrated with SS), it still is prudent for her or somebody to confirm accuracy of such with the local SS office.

I agree Dan...when my mom got done work with disability, the SS office she called was VERY helpful in answering all of her questions etc....and I knew then that she had the CORRECT info, instead of what she "thought she knew" about SSI

No - it's a very small "mom/pop" type factory where she worked..

For sure.. I think she was just afraid (or reluctant) to call at all because the person that told her this was simply adamant about it..

My mother received SS Disability when she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. They were very helpful and didn't fight at her claim at all.

o.k.-there are 2 types of social security disability payments:

ssi-which is for a disabled person who does not have sufficient work quarters in the social security system,

and social security disability-which is for a disabled person who does have sufficient work quarters in the system.

for either types you must have been disabled (social security's criteria not nesc. the doctor's) for at least 6 months (with the exception of some terminal illnesses) to make an application. applications can take years to be approved (i've seen many that went through appeal after appeal for several years before final approval) but if it is approved it is retrocative to the date social security deems as your begining date of eligibility (that is why it is important to appeal and not reapply, a reapplication can result in months of lost benefits whereas an appeal protects your original date of applicaiton). once an application is approved it can take several months to receive the retroactive payment as well as the continuing benefit.

ssi is also an income based program, a child with a valid disability can be ineligible due to parental income/an adult due to spousal income. the max. amount of ssi is not alot (can be as little as a few hundred per month).

with either ssi or social security disabilty, if there is a responsible party for the injury/illness a lien is placed against any future monies the person may recieve (if you have a sharp attny. they can structure a settlement to avoid this) to repay the benefit amount and /or any medical benefits received.

social security website offers good information, and most social services agenicies offer workers who are trained to assist in filling out the paperwork, gathering the medical data, and assisting with the appeal process ( a much better avenue than using one of the attnys. that advertise on t.v. to do the same thing for a % of whatever benefit you may ultimatly receive).

Thanks, barkley! Good info to pass along to her.. :flower:

Anyone have experience with this?

I have a friend in CT who was injured severely in a car accident about 2 years ago.. There is a lawsuit pending (tractor-trailer went through a stop sign and broadsided her vehicle) but because the tt firm is fighting this tooth and nail, any kind of settlement is a long, long way off..

Anyhow - she is unable to work at all - but afraid to apply for SSI because someone told her that whatever she receives from SSI now, will be deducted from what she receives later in life when she retires..

I've never heard of that - was just wondering if anyone else did - or if she was the victim of bad information..

Thanks!
There is a difference between SSD and SSI...One is means tested(SSI,one is earned(SSD)... which one is she applying for?
I recieve SSD
