9 Days Poly CL DxDP...Too Much Food???...Too Much Fun!!!...1600 Pictures

Do you listen to the disunplugged podcast? Kevin does great dining reviews. Needless to say I think everything on your list is great with the major exception of Kat Cora's, terrible reviews for food, service, and atmosphere. I have heard good things on the Flying Fish. I would recommend Yachtsmen Steakhouse - 2 points, but well worth it. If you stay at BC - Cape May is also very good for breakfast and the other meals of the day. I would pay out of pocket for Beaches and Cream (unless you are doing deluxe again and have extra points). I would also add some additional dining options in EPCOT since you can walk there, dine, then catch the monorail if you are on the way to the MK (hence, skip the MK bus from BC) I really want to try Chef's de France. If you haven't done Garden Grille, it is really fun and great character interaction! Hope this helps!:)

Thanks, Erin....have not even thought about Garden Grill. I looked at the reviews last night and most of them were really good. Said it was great for kids. And yes, Kat Cora's doesn't look that great and it's 2TSs. We will be doing the Dxdp again. Had thought about only doing the regular DDP, but we like to eat at signatures, so it might not work. If we stay at BC, then Cape May & Beaches & Cream are two definites. We always go to Yachtman's, no matter where we stay...it's a must do for DH;)....he loves it!

We are in a dilema with choosing a resort!! One would think that it would be easy to choose. Last trip was super easy. We origianlly booked AKL, but then quickly changed to the Poly without a blink of the eye. We have actually tossed around the idea of doing a split stay, but not sure....seems like it would be too much work checking in and out twice. Who knows:confused3:confused3 Any suggestions from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

While my parents had the children at the Luau, DH and I had "date night"!!! Not bad, huh?? Built in babysitters!;) Perhaps that's why we invited them to go on our next WDW vacation....just kidding, dad!

Our ressies were at 9pm (I know, kinda late, but we wanted to be there for the fireworks) We decided that that we would leave early and just stroll around the Poly, then head over to the CR and stroll around there.

It's always a tradition for us to make silly hat pictures...DS9 request this of his parents, so we have to comply. This pic is at the Poly.

DSC_1773.jpg

We arrived at the CR, via monorail of course! Can you tell how much I love the monorail???!! This hotel brings back so many good memories of when I was a child. My family had some great times here!!

DSC_1771.jpg

We headed over to their gift shops to see what we could find....and yes....we found another opportunity for DH to get a silly hat picture. Ya know, you can be as ridiculous as you want at Disney and no one bats an eye...it's all considered normal at WDW!

DSC_1748.jpg

Around 8:15 we decided to go ahead and check in even though our ressies were at 9pm.

DSC_1770.jpg

There is actually a place downstairs (Cali Grill is on the top floor of CR) for you to check in. And when I say downstairs, I mean like floor 3 or 4....something like that. Does anyone remember which floor? The guy that checked us in was super friendly. He told us about the observation deck to watch the fireworks and the bar area, etc.

When you get off the elevator at Cali Grill, this is what you will see.....

DSC_1768.jpg

Even though this is a very "adult" restaurant, there were children around, even babies....notice the strollers in this picture. No complaints, though. All the kids were very well behaved. DH and I have contemplated taking our children next June...we'll see.

DSC_1767.jpg

DH and I did snag a small table in the bar area and had a couple of drinks. Now...here comes a complaint (the only one I have for this restaurant) DH went to the bar to get a drink. The lady that was bartending was less than friendly. He asked her for a Mojito. She looks at him like he had horns coming out of his head and said very rudely, "we don't serve drinks like THAT here." and she walked off. Extremely strange for typical Disney service. Anyway, that will be my only complaint. And it really didn't bother him too much, we were enjoying our time together and taking in the GREAT atmosphere!!

You can see the entire MK, Poly & GF from the restaurant. We walked outside on the observation deck to see what that was all about....great view up there of BLT... that place looks super cool!!!

DSC_1750.jpg

DSC_1749.jpg

We were seated before 9pm by the window. Our waiter was fabulous!! He was very attentive, very nice! He immediately told us that we could just get up and go watch the fireworks and he would get our order when we returned. Also....FYI...there are 2 observation decks. (this info came from our waiter) There is one that most people go directly to, then there is the other one that is not as easy to find, and I think, a bit smaller.

DSC_1762.jpg

I attempted to make pictures of the fireworks. Apologies for the poor quality, but I'm still in the process of learning how to use my new camera. (The music is pipped in on the deck.)

DSC_1755.jpg

Okay....no one start flaming me, but I'm getting ready to state my opinion. And let me preface this by saying that we did really enjoy the fireworks from the roof!! It was great....BUT....we have watched the fireworks from 4 locations; Mainstreet, Poly, GF & Cali Grill. MainStreet is obviously a great location that can't be beat. IMO, though, the Poly beats the GF & CR for this reason. When you are at the CR & GF, you are watching the fireworks from the side, so you can tell that the fireworks are coming from different places in the MK. When you are watching from the Poly, it's dead on center and looks like the fireworks are right over the castle. Don't get me wrong, it was really cool to be so close to the fireworks and MK, but I still prefer the Poly for my viewing location.

DSC_1760.jpg

Okay, so on with the food situation! Since we were on the Dxdp, we were able to get sushi as our appetizers. Holy cow!!!!! If you like sushi, you will LOVE Cali Grill.....a beautiful presentation, too.

DSC_1763.jpg

DH and I probably should have just ordered 1 appetizer. It was soooooo much food...almost like a meal, really.

DSC_1764.jpg

Don't worry if you aren't a sushi lover....there are plenty of other options! And before I forget, if you are a wine expert, there are TONS of selections!!!! Our waiter was very knowledgeable of all wines....thank goodness, because I'm not.

For dinner, DH and I ordered the same thing....an oakgrilled fillet...it looks small, but was really thick and super yummmmmmmmmy!!!!

DSC_1765.jpg

Honestly, by the end of dinner, I could barely put another bite in my mouth, but the waiter talked us into trying the Bananas & Caramel......so we ordered one.

DSC_1766.jpg

Okay....we should have ordered TWO! This is one of the best desserts at Disney. I've said that before, haven't I???

So, the big question once again.....Would we return???????

YES! MOST DEFINITELY! ABSOLUTELY! WITHOUT A DOUBT! Fabulous service (minus the bartender) fabulous atmosphere & fabulous food!!!!! Next time, though, we will be taking my parents with us....and the kids.....NEXT JUNE:dance3:

Stay tuned for STAR WARS at DHS......

I might just go peel a banana and put carmel on it - yummy!!!

That date night looked fun - we have yet to be 'alone' at WDW. Anyway - with regards to you contemplating a split stay, I just wouldn't do it, too much work - just another reason to go back for another stay too. Try BC if you haven't, or stay Poly or GF since you like them. What about CR since you have so many memories from your childhood? I think we will be flipping between BC and Poly for the next few trips, they are tied in our books.

Looking forward to more report!! Thanks!! Erin

Wow, the sushi looks great!! We aren't on the Dxdp but after seeing your pics I think we should definately spring for the appetizers!

:cool1:I'm so happy to hear that you recommend CG! I'm totally excited about going now. I'm curious - how long did the meal take? I assume you took the monorail to and from CR. When I reserved Neverland Club for my kids I guessed that we would be gone for at least three hours - I really wasn't sure what to say?? Also, did you feel rushed at all during the meal - this is one of DH's biggest pet peeves. For obvious reasons I understand why Disney needs to turn tables quickly, but I'd hate to feel rushed on "date night"!

I'm a huge sushi fan! How does California Grill compare to Kona's sushi? Have been there, but not CG. Didn't know if you felt like CG was overpriced.

We have had Kona's sushi, too, which was outstanding. But, I think Cali Grill has a slight edge over Kona. DH went crazy with his appetizer. He said it was the best sushi ever....very fresh, very tasty. As far as the prices go, well....isn't everything at Disney overpriced;);) Seriously, though, it wasn't outrageous (but not cheap!) and since it was so good, we didn't mind.

You are so right. I checked out several threads today that were talking about split stays......so not for my family. When we get to Disney, I completely unpack EVERYTHING and put everything in drawers. It takes me a while, too, to repack. And the CR???....really haven't given much thought to that. My father would love to go back to CR. Since my family has been there, I kinda want to try something new, ya know. Of course I'm not opposed to that suggestion at all. I guess that DH, the kids and I will have to sit down and decide together what we really want to do.....I have a feeling it will be BC;)

Thanks for your advice and input!

Thank you for the reply! Dumb question.."was it expensive?":rotfl: I forgot where I'm talking about. hoping that a discount comes out for next year!! Anyone else??? I have read that Disney is going to cut some of the discounts. Does anyone know if this is true?:confused3

Nice review of CG! It makes me want to go there. I see DXDDP again in our future.

With regards to a split stay, it's not for everyone, but we manage it pretty easily. I love to keep our room nice and always unpack everything too. For a split stay, we organize our packing by day. For instance we have one or two suitcases packed with everyone's clothes for the first hotel and another suitcase or two with the clothes for the second part of the trip. We have one suitcase for toiletries and other items we may use the entire trip. That way we only have to unpack half the suitcases at one time. On WDW property to switch hotels all you have to do is ask then to transfer your luggage to the next hotel and it will be there waiting for you when you get there. On transfer day, we head off to a park in the morning (for rope drop of course) and return to our new hotel in the afternoon and unpack on our break. It really doesn't interrupt our trip at all. But then again, maybe not everyone plans what their entire family is going to wear every day of their trip in advance! We do. We also stay in DVC villas with a washer and dryer so we do laundry almost every day and pack away clean clothes to take home or wear again later in the trip.

Sally,

We did take the monorail;) love it!! So super easy and fast! Ressies were for 9, but they sat us around 8;40ish. The waiter was sooooo friendly and encouraged us to get up and go watch the fireworks. He told us to take our time and when we returned he would take our order. We did not feel rushed at all!!! The waiter was very attententive, but not bothering us every second...ya know what I mean? The appetizers and main course were spread out nicely. After we were completely finished with our steaks, the waiter then came back and offered dessert and coffee. I so know what you mean about Disney turning tables fast!....and understand it (I waited tables in college) I guess Disney recognizes the fact that CG is a signature restaurant and people are paying lots of money to eat there. It's more of a dining experience. 3 hours should be plenty of time....that's about how long we were gone. We strolled around CR before eating and then took our time getting back to the Poly. The dinner will probably take maybe 2 hours. Y'all will really enjoy it! Let us know what you think when you return from your trip!

Okay....you make a split stay sound so easy!!!!! Still don't know if I'm up to it, though:confused: I am a compulsive planner/organizer, so that would work in my favor. Guess, too, it depends on how many days we decide to stay...last trip we were there 10 days...Fri-Sun...not sure, yet, about our June trip. Do y'all always do split stays and how many days in each each resort? Hmmmmm.....I'm still not convinced;) So many decisions!!!!!

Citricos is high on our priority list along with Artist Point. Of course DH and I would like to try Victoria & Alberts, but not sure we will do that on the next trip. Really, really want to go back to the HDDR....we LOVED it!! Any suggestions?.....I can already see the weight gain coming!:rotfl:

I LOVED Citricos, I love the ambiance of the restaurant, the service, the view, and of course the food! I pretty much do all of my dinners at signature restaurants and I always have to make a stop at Citricos.

We are in a dilema with choosing a resort!! One would think that it would be easy to choose. Last trip was super easy. I think you would really enjoy BC. Its very accessible to Epcot (short walk) and DS (longer walk or boat ride). Since you will be going in June you'll really be able to appreciate the pool, lots of fun. The lifeguards do make a point to check and make sure only resort guests are using the pool. I know you mentioned wanted to try beaches and cream, for me the actual lunch food is fine, nothing to write home about....but the ice cream sundaes are worth a visit!! Especially with a large group you should order the kitchen sink!

Wow, the sushi looks great!! We aren't on the Dxdp but after seeing your pics I think we should definately spring for the appetizers!

I am a huge sushi lover! IT looks sooo yummy! This is one of the few signature restaurants I have not tried yet. I love going to my favorites it can be hard to try a new place :goodvibes

Great update! I love the funny hat pics :)

This is exactly what we do. It helps also that we drive, so we don't even have the suitcases we're not "using" in the room with us at all - just leave them in the car!

We don't do the laundry thing - we haven't stayed with a washer/dryer in the room, so it's not as convenient.

Great updates of the Luau and California Grill! They are both on my wish list!! :goodvibes My husband would love that sushi appetizer - it's HUGE!!

Those pics of the MK at dusk are gorgeous!! :cloud9:

I agree that the Poly definitely has the edge as far as viewing the fireworks! Second to Main St, it's definitely the place to go!!

.........I love the funny hat pics :)

Ok seriously, WDW is the only place I know that adults can get away with wearing ridiculous hats, t-shirts, face paint, etc. I love it! My father who is 64 years old walked around all day with his face painted like a pirate, then went to the Brown Derby for dinner....no one blinked an eye:lmao: It's the norm at Disney. So many people wonder why my family likes WDW so much...this is just one of the 100s of reasons! I told my DH that on our next trip, we will see how many pictures we can get of the "silly hats". Ridiculous, I know....but so much fun;)

And thanks so much for all of your Disney info! The BC is looking better & better! We love signatures, too. On our trip next June, I already have 6 signatures in mind...might have to extend the trip:rotfl:

Last year we stayed 4 nights at FW Cabins and 2 at BC. We checked out of FW in the early morning, made it to DHS for rope drop and then when we were ready for a break, checked in at the Beach Club (right around 2pm). Really very seamless.

The plan this year is 3 nights at POR - check out early in the a.m. again, but head straight to the Poly. That will be an MK day for us, so after check in (I'm guessing our room won't be ready that early) we'll just hop on the monorail :woohoo:. We'll just leave our bags in the car and "move in" when we come back for our afternoon break. We have reservations for lunch at Kona that day (not really something you need to know - I just like thinking about it :thumbsup2)

Question for ya....I see on your signature that you have stayed values, mods and deluxes, and on your upcoming trip you are doing mod/deluxe. Do you find it hard, after staying at a deluxe, to go back to a mod or value? Have put some serious thought into staying at a moderate (big money saver) but, I'm sooooooo afraid that I would be comparing it the entire trip to the GF, Poly, etc. We stayed at the AsMo for 1 night....and no offense to anyone...just not for me. And not that it was bad AT ALL, it just didn't have some of the amenities that we are use to. We spend a fair amount of time at the resort. The CBR pirate rooms look kinda cool....DS9 thought they looked awesome. Anyway....just wondering:confused3 I'm really trying to be a bit more budget friendly for our June trip.

Okay, this may be a long response, but here goes!

Our first trip to DW was a spur of the moment kind of thing - decided to join my older sister on her trip back in March of 2002. We only had two kids then and they were aged 4 and 18 months. We had not done ANY research and were actually really impressed with ASMo! In fact, when we told our 4yo that we were heading to MK, he said "but I thought this WAS disneyworld!" (referring to ASMo). The giant icons, and fun atmosphere just couldn't be beat. We returned to ASMo a few times - we were spending all our time in the parks anyway, so not really spending time in the room or using the resort amenities. I think we've outgrown the values now - both in family size and the way we spend our DW vacations. We've started spending more time in the resort (less in the parks) and the kids want a pool slide and mom likes prettier theming!

Tried our first mod in November 2005 - CSR. We had three kids by then, and wanted a bigger room. Have to say we were not impressed with CSR. Theming is very barren and dry, and we absolutely hated the food court! (just our personal opinion :)) Plus, the room really didn't seem much bigger than at the All Stars.

However, in April 2007 we stayed at CBR and fell in love! The grounds are beautiful there, their food court is much better than CSR and the kids loved playing at the beach and having the pirate pool (it's even better now, I hear). The problem with this resort is that we can't fit 5 in a room (now that our third is over age 3) :headache: If we could do 5 here, I think we'd always stay at CBR. We also like POR (where you can put 5 - though I'm not terribly fond of the trundle bed thing!) but the theming isn't quite as appealing to us as CBR.

Our final mod was FW Cabins, and again we loved it here. The theming isn't as good as CBR and my one complaint was that the internal bus and golf carts kind of take away from the "away from it all" feeling when walking around the resort (if you understand what I mean). I really liked having all that space to spread out though, and the kitchen was awesome. It was also wonderful having a "stand alone" cabin - no neighbors on any side - and your own deck with grill. Really a great place to stay.

On to deluxes (I warned you this would be long ;)). We only stayed two nights at the Beach Club last August, but I don't think we'll go back. The pool is wonderful, but I didn't like the "feel" of the resort. Seemed a little stuffy/fussy to me and there were really no grounds to walk around on. You can walk around the Boardwalk, but I prefer trees/foliage to buildings/storefronts. I also didn't like the fact that to get outside, you have to walk an endless hallway, take an elevator and go through a crowded lobby. I like to just open my door and be outside :cloud9:. I have to say, though, that the walk to Epcot was a great perk! Also, the room was nothing special - didn't like having the sink outside the bathroom as I'm always up early and really couldn't get ready without waking everyone else up.

We'll see how we like the Poly, and the only other deluxe I think I might like is AKL. I envision future trips at either CBR (with two rooms) or FW Cabins.

I'm sure that's more information than you wanted, but if you have any specific questions, let me know!

She looks at him like he had horns coming out of his head and said very rudely, "we don't serve drinks like THAT here." and she walked off.[/I]

Ew, gross! What an attitude!

Wow, I literally had no idea that you could see the difference in where the fireworks go off like that. I've only ever seen them from the Poly (I agree, a great place to watch from). I think we're going to brave Main Street this time around. Still, there can't be anything like watching from your own balcony...especially when it means you don't have to brave the crowds on the way out!

Okay, so on with the food situation! Since we were on the Dxdp, we were able to get sushi as our appetizers. Holy cow!!!!! If you like sushi, you will LOVE Cali Grill.....a beautiful presentation, too. [/I]

LOVE LOVE LOVE the sushi at CG! The spicy kazan roll rocks my world, both DH and I are salivating just thinking about it. I have never had an *actual* entree there - usually get the sushi combo platter as my main course - but I think this year I might venture into the entree section of the menu! Still, who knows... :)

Okay, this may be a long response, but here goes!......

THANK YOU for your long response!!! Great details and wonderful info! FW would be a great option if it were just us, but we want my parents to join us again so it will be a party of 7:dance3: When we went over there for the HDDR, we really liked what we saw.

BC is one of those resorts that I'm going to have to try at some point. We have been over there several times, and each time we go I always say we need to try this one day.....I'm still skeptical, but curiosity is killing me;)

How were the buses at the CBR? Again, this is one of my concerns. The monorail & boats are so convenient at the Poly & GF. I'll be anxious to see what you think about the Poly. When you get back, post back and let us know.

Again, thanks for all the info!! This is what makes the DisBoards so great:woohoo:

Ew, gross! What an attitude!

Yeah, we were a bit shocked...totally not expecting her attitude at such a nice restaurant. And perhaps they don't make Mojitos there, who knows? Just politely tell us that, ya know.

We had no idea either until we watched from the Poly. We first saw the fireworks at the GF and thought they were great!! Then, of course, this past May at the Poly. That's when we realized that the fireworks were coming from different locations in the park. And you are so right....watching from your own room is a magical experience, not to mention no crowds;) We were really lucky because our patio was right by a speaker....could hear all the music! The 3rd place we watched the fireworks was from Main Street....AWESOME! Although I will admit, right before the show was over, we high tailed it out before the crowd started to leave. The 4th place was from the observation deck at CG...another great view, but you could really tell that the fireworks were not over the castle...it almost looked like they were coming from BEHIND MK. At some point, I would like to rent a boat and watch them. I'm going to attempt, at some point, to post a short video of Wishes....:confused3...if I can figure it out.

Do y'all always do TPV at the Poly? Isn't it the best view?!
