I had to post this as it is truly sad. Apparently, our president doesn't even know that 9/11/01 occured on 9/11.

I have a record in office, as well. And all Americans have seen that record. September the 4th, 2001, I stood in the ruins of the Twin Towers. It's a day I will never forget.
Source: White House Press Release, October 18, 2004.

Sad...3,000 dead, a turning point in American history and he get's it wrong.

Now, offer your excuses for W.

Wow - I just checked the White House Press site, and it does say that he said that in his remarks in NJ today. If you read the transcript, its right near the bottom.

Interesting.

What is it about President Bush that forces people to expect absolute perfection in every thought, word, and deed? This couldn't have simply been a TYPING error, now? Could it?

You can be sure that if he actually SAID it, the Democrats will have the sound byte in all of their upcoming commercials.

I had a lot more to say, but....never mind. I'll make my choice clear in the voting booth on November 2.

Yeah, so what? I knew what he meant, and that's better than I can say when Kerry opens his mouth.

By the way it is "pretend YOU'RE not an idiot" Guess if we're not perfect, we expect everyone else to be!

Yes, he should be allowed to make mistakes but getting THAT date wrong is not one of them.

Not getting embroiled in this one, especially since I'm still not sure which way I'm jumping, but.....does anyone remember when Dan Quayle misstated when the invasion of Pearl Harbor was? Man, he was fodder for the comics forever!!!!

He was probably thinking of September 11th thus the word September came out of his mouth.

Anyway doesn't matter, nothing anyone on a bulletin board or anywhere else says that will make me change my mind on my vote.

inaminute - I agree with you!!!

Hmmm... here are a few ideas to explain this error:

1) He can time travel. You know, he left the present on 9/4/01 and stood in the ruins of the towers in the future.

2) He's prescient. He had a dream on 9/4/01 about standing in the ruins of the towers.

3) He was talking about the ruins of some other towers.

4) Dick Cheney had another memory lapse and told W. the wrong year through the wireless transmitter.

BTW - Here's a link to this on the White House website:

Let's look at that entire part, shall we?

"I have a record in office, as well. And all Americans have seen that record. September the 4th, 2001, I stood in the ruins of the Twin Towers. It's a day I will never forget. Bernie might remember the workers in hard hats that were yelling at me and yelling at us, "Whatever it takes." A man grabbed me by the arm, just coming out of the rubble and he said, "Do not let me down." I have a responsibility that goes on. I wake up every morning thinking about how to make our country more secure. I acted again and again to protect the American people. I will never relent in defending our country, whatever it takes."

Now I don't know if it's a misprint or is the President misspoke but it's pretty easy to see he was referring to his visit to ground zero on September 14, 2001. September 14th. He wasn't referring to September 11. Maybe he said the 4th, maybe he was misunderstood. I don't know, I didn't hear it.

But the fact that you read it and didn't piece it together? Telling. And sad. A perfectly good drive-by, wasted.

Now, offer your excuses, MMouse.

ITA (if he truly said what OP claims he had said)

in my opinion, that's disrespectful and beyond idiocy (especially coming from the President)

And what date do you think THAT date was? Hint: It's not September 11.

I'm SO sick of ALL these threads on both sides, please hurry up November 2!!!!!!!!

I'll bet it was a typo. Why can't people wait and see if it's a typo before they jump all over him?? Cause that would be no fun.

Ok, after reading the whole transcript, the mistake is not as bad as it seems. Yet, he still should not get any dates dealing with that time frame wrong IMO. Disagree all you want, but just like you, I am allowed to have my own opinions!

Seriously. I'm s HUGE political junkie and even I am getting sick of this crap. I wonder if people think that if they get in enough jabs and punches on "the other guy" it makes them informed and politically active?

Errr.. ummmm.. what date woudl that be? You know he wasn't standing in ruins of the Twin Towers on 9/11, don't you. So, it couldn't possibly have been THAT date, now could it? You don't actually think 9/11 was the date to which he was referring, do you. I mean, at least pretend your not an...oh...nevermind.

OK, I am done. When people start to call me names, or at least "hint" it, that is uncalled for, even in a political thread. I have not been vocal about where I stand for fear of flames for being undecided. I thought we were supposed to play nice and leave the name calling alone...guess I was wrong on that too!

piglet too, forget about it. :D It's not worth getting upset over. I understand your point though. Maybe he was referring to Sept 14 or something, but never in the history of US Presidents have we had to try to make sense of what the President is talking about like we do with W. He needs to work on that.

The day in question was Sept. 14th - a Friday. I remember it, don't ask me how. The attack was Tuesday the 11th so that would make Friday the 14th. I'm sure it was a typo.

Please don't cry.

It's sad that some people hate him so much that they use any excuse to hammer on him. They want to believe that he's so stupid that he can't remember when the towers were hit.

Is it possible that the person who transcribed the audio just didn't here "teenth".

In either case it's pretty clear that the person who posted that transcript didn't check for typo's or other errors.
