9/11/01

Reading these stories prompted me to mail another military care package. Via AnySoldier.com, my partner and I found a Marine unit in Afghanistan. We'll go shopping for hygiene supplies and snack goods tomorrow and then mail the package on Saturday. I'll even include small Mickey and Minnie plushies for the Marines to hand out to Afghan children.

I've done this before and it is a wonderful way to express appreciation to our men and women overseas.

Thank you for that information. I'm checking it out now. I have boxes of Beanie Babies in my attic. Looks like I've found a new home for them. :thumbsup2

Also, I have worked with this organization in the past, if anyone else would like to clean out there attics:

Does anyone else on the board feel that it just happend yesterday.

Yep! It was the day that after 7 years of searching, my youngest DD was diagnosed with a horrible genetic disease that is progressive.

Part of me feels guilty for not grieving with the rest of the country but we were (and still are) dealing with horrible news on a very personal level.

Do any Dis'ers recall a post on the Disboards on the first anniversary of 9/11 that was a montage of photos of 9/11/01? The photos were set to the background music of an Enya song. I have tried searching for this post over the years but have never found it.

DSs are too young to remember much about 9/11, and I tried at the time to shelter them from the news. I remember thinking as I watched the first anniversary Disboards post that I should save it for them to watch when they were older because of how it captured the horrific events of the day. Now that they are old enough to handle it and they ask questions about 9/11, I'd like to be able to show them that Enya montage if I could find it.

We live in NJ. There was one area where I sometimes drive, if it was a clear day you could see the Trade center. I always get sad when I drive it now. It is one of those days where I can remember exactly what I did that morning.
I do remember the day it happened. At first they thought it was a small plane. I heard that on the radio in the car, looked out the window and thought how the heck could anyone not see those towers?? it was such a beautiful, clear not a cloud in the blue sky type of day!!

Yeah....so ironic that this tragedy occurred on one of the most gorgeous days weather-wise in years. Absolutely perfect picture-postcard beautiful day.

I was out walking the dog; left home before the first plane hit; didn't come home until after the second one hit. Didn't hear anything about it until an hour or two later when I decided to turn on the TV. By that time both towers had already collapsed.

Some things that stand out vividly in my memory:

Walking outside and looking up and the sky was so bright blue. No clouds, and no airplane contrails. It looked so strange.

Driving to pick up my 3rd grader from school. When I got there parents were standing outside waiting for school to let out and no one was talking. It was so, so quiet even in that crowd of people.

After my son and I got home. I told him that something terrible happened and explained. He'd already known something was wrong and he wanted assurance. I tried to give it to him, but he still went up to his room, brought down his toy guns and his pillows and made a barricade in the living room. :( I still have a picture he drew of the towers on fire.

Feeling so vulnerable. Boom, the first plane hit, then the second, then the pentagon, then the plane in Pennsylvania...you didn't know where it was going to hit next.

Neighbors and strangers banding together. All the flags flying. People feeling close to people they'd never met before.

One more thing that I try to not think about. We were standing at the bus stop. A plane flew very low overhead. It was before we heard what was going on. It was the plane that crashed in PA. I have nightmares about that plane all the time. Just thinking that we saw them alive- right above us- low. God bless all those people.

I'll never forget where I was and what I was doing when I found out what happened. My heart breaks for everyone directly involved.
