8year old boy birthday ideas?

I remembered one of DS's fav board games at that age. MOUSETRAP. Classic.

Skylander is huge here but it's one of those things you need to be sure the child has the system and accessories. It's not one just a wii game you can play on the wii. I did not know this when DS came home from kindergarten totally convinced we were going to target right then to get a skylander game! Very cool, and fun and expensive to get into, so be sure the child is already into the game.

My youngest dd attends a small school, so birthday parties tend to be whole class invites. That means this past year we have attended several 8 year old birthday parties. My go to gift for that age boy is the stomp rocket (check Amazon).

I thought it was a cool gift, but I knew it was a hit when I RSVP'd for the 3rd or 4th boy party and the mom literally said how much her son was hoping my dd would arrive with a stomp rocket. A little forward on the mom's part, but funny.

Another cool boy gift I like to give Snap Circuits Jr - my two older boys (now teens) loved this at this age.

My nephew is 8 and I work with that age so here are a few ideas...

Disney has great how to draw books..Amazon too A few books and materials to draw if he likes that.

I gave my nephew a dinosaur dig kit..LOVED it. Entertained for a long time

If you have time take him out for thday..his special day. My nephew likes rock climbing so that lunch and a trip to Target for a small treat is a blast!

Legos are great

K'nex is very cool too!

Good Luck!:cool1:

Remote controlled stuff is always a hit in our house. My DS 9 loves his RC helicopters. It is a good generic boy gift and there are many options. Target, Toys R Us and Radio shack carry different models and brands. Most of them are under $50.

Adding: my Ds son has the smithsonion Dino dig kit and it was a lot of fun for him but it was done pretty quickly. He also got the kit for prehistoric "monsters". They are tiny but fascinating and have lived for a long time. He also has a ant farm and I love the thing because again it is fascinating watching them tunnel through the gel.

Ds loves skylanders but the new skylanders swap force comes out in OCT so I am cutting back on current skylanders since I know he wi want the new figures.

DD is 9, but for her friends that are boys - they LOVE getting gift cards. I got one a gift card to a book store and he LOVED it. I packaged it in a book - think old school... Hardy Boys, Boxcar Children. Boys also love to read the Guiness Book of World Records - always a hit at the school library or book fairs. There's also a Dr. Seuss Book - My book about Me. They fill it in. DH had it when he was little and we were reading through it with DD when she was 8 - it was awesome! The drawings and little things he filled in were SO cute!!!

Oh - another book series that's cute for boys - The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary. Cute story, pretty easy read, and series is 3 books long, published in 1965, but still relevant in with today's youth. Another that DD's 2nd grade teacher read - SuperFudge. It's a series of 4 books by Judy Blume, published in 1980, but that whole class, boys and girls in 2012- they were riveted!

Oh, also, DD LOVES National Geographic Kids - it's all about animals and it's actually really interesting! (DD got a subscription as a gift).

Maybe I'm a boring gift giver, but we're not raising our kid in a tech-heavy youth... Many kids that come over to play absolutely LOVE the more simple things we do - imaginary play, dolls, etc. It's not what they're used to at home, where they always have some kind of screen in front of them - Computer, video game, tablet, phone. We do play wii, but they normally want to do that for just a little bit and return to a board game, painting, or looking through DD's shelves and shelves of books, or begging DD to teach them how to knit or make friendship bracelets (so they can pick from her string stash - she has quite a collection of color choices) - ha!

Anyway, we find that a small lego set, a book, and a gift card to a book store for $10 is a great go-to gift from our family. We personalize it to their interests - what kind of lego set, what kind of book, and then the receiver gets to pick their own book with the gift card.
