That is what I just paid here in NC. I even questioned the manager, she said that it was correct.

Apparently if the bread is baked in the store, that is the sales tax.
If it was baked somewhere else, it would have been 2%.

I love taxes. Can't wait for the VAT tax!!!:yay:

on yea... here in VA
on prepackaged foods.. 4.5 %
if its baked or fast food its closer to 9.5 or 10.5 % based on what city you are in when u buy it

medications are like 2.5 %

If they do the VAT tax, we won't be able to afford bread because of the tax!!! Can you imagine ? "Ma'am, that'll be $ 7.50 for your loaf of Wonder". Holy cow. Who knew having a sandwich was going to become a luxury ? :goodvibes

Hmmm, I had to google the VAT. That would be an economy stopper for sure! Who sits around and thinks up these things!!!!!!!

Around the first of the year I became sick and tired of the high bread prices (not even including the sales tax!) and dusted off my bread machine. A 50# bag of bread flour at Costco is 12 bucks. I've made 3 or 4 loaves a week since then and still haven't gone through the whole bag (getting close though). Plus, my family likes the bread better than the store bought!

Moral of the story: dust off your bread machine. :)

I use the bread machine to make the dough and then just form it into loaves, let it rise and bake'em! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I would answer that question, but then the thread would close.;)

15% Tax on any and all items you spend money on here in Ontario. EVERYTHING. That doesnt include the (on average) 33% income tax (some of us pay more), 5% property tax, 400% "Sin tax" on alcohol and even higher on ciggarettes.

After paying taxes, we barely have any money left to spend on food, gas and mortgages.

Not true. We DON'T pay tax on food. Convenience foods, yes, but basics-milk and bread (even if baked in the store) etc, no. And even the convenience food depends on the size. 1 doughnut, tax; package of 6 must be dessert for a family, no tax. Rarely drink, don't smoke, so they don't get my sin taxes. :rotfl:

I still remember buying milk in Florida at the hotel one time, and the added tax....and that was years ago. :scared1:

Hey look at that.. i am GLAD to be wrong about this... but now i have to go back to the Grocery store who DID charge me an across the board 15% on my bill yesterday, when ALL i bought was a loaf of bread, bag of milk, and a case of soda.

We don't have tax on food...yet. I imagine that we'll see it eventually though. They get us in other ways now though.

We now have the HST!

So far we are lucky the basic food - bread, milk, eggs aren't taxed. I heard that soy milk will be taxed (not sure if that's true). Some food will be taxed-still not sure on what exactly, I guess I will start finding out as I purchase it.

::yes:: just the soda should have been taxed . . . unless. . .

If your soy milk is less than 600 mL then you would pay tax
The HST will generally employ the same rules and tax base as the GST. Thus, food products currently subject to 5% GST will be subject to 13% HST when sold in Ontario. Food products that are currently zero-rated (i.e., taxable at 0%) will retain their zero-rated status.
The HST is charged on containers of plant milks smaller than 600 millilitres, but only when they are sold separately.

Oh my goodness. I feel bad about complaining.
400% sin tax. Does that mean that a $10.00 bottle of whatever will have a $40.00 tax on it, bringing the total to $50.00? And a 200K house will pay 10K in taxes? Oh my goodness. I am stunned.

Good luck on that! I am going to look further into my 8.75% tax and see if it was correct or not.
So far, it looks like it is at least 6%, but that 2.75% extra is up for debate.

I wonder why they would just tax soy milk? That is strange. I can't drink the stuff myself, mouth goes numb. Allergic.
