*8/22 Update: Our Intentions Were Good, But The Treats Were Better: One Month in Disney (4/21-5/21)

That must’ve been a nice surprise for him!
He was very excited, haha!
I never would’ve thought the breakfast would be so good there! Wow!!
We ate at that RC on the boys first trip. It was dinner though. Wasn’t too impressed. But again it was for the experience.
We were very surprised!
Wow that is a huge corn dog if they could share it. Sounds yummy!
It was huge! They were each going to get their own until the saw the size of it!
At least the bread was good. Looks are deceiving I guess.
It wasn't bad, just nothing great.
Java sounds like a great place for breakfast! Everything you got there looked yummy! It’s nice to have a good place right in your hotel. So convenient
Even better that it was "free"...haha.
We need to get here soon too!
Yes and get the salmon and salad!
It must have been delicious to come in 2nd behind Key West!!
It was!

5/18 One Final Fantastic Day with Our Sons

We started our morning off by introducing our sons to one of our favorite breakfast buffets, Boma! Between the four of us I think we sampled everything on the buffet! Here’s our first four plates.

We all very much enjoyed our selections, especially the ham with Boma sauce, bread pudding, and pecan sticky buns. DH was initially disappointed they didn’t have the tater tots they usually serve, which he says are the best tots anywhere. However, they had sweet plantains instead and he thought those were excellent too. DS-28 really liked the deviled eggs.

After our meal we enjoyed watching the animals on the savannah at both the Jambo House and Kidani Village. We then drove to the TTC and walked over to the Polynesian. It was super hot so we stopped for a drink at Captain Cooks and then showed our sons the new Tower. We had a great chat with a CM at the DVC kiosk. She challenged us to find a hidden Minnie in the mural. I found it!

AD_4nXcTiJULazx0srf9_5E6TLlbyTD_mmWo9s5d1-kuVyzWJU0WzUWCy6kPXjYI5XGj3ZYsabHi3q_Yn_E5c4p-qVFRQx13Kxn0xQ0yAZkahKfLxpnEMIYq-kWyLrxpaP8b9StWuGanCw

After exploring the Tower, we walked over to the Grand Floridian. We were very pleased to discover that the sodas we bought at Captain Cooks were able to be refilled at Gasparilla, since we had refills left and were within our two hour limit (pro-tip!)

We continued walking over to the Magic Kingdom. I gave our sons a choice of heading over to the Contemporary or taking a boat to Fort Wilderness. They opted for the boat ride. Little did I know, DS-26 had an ulterior motive, he wanted to try the Buckaroo Bread he heard us raving about. So, we headed to Trail’s End and purchased this tray of deliciousness!

This is such a tasty treat and it was much better to share it with four people. DS-26 loved it! DS-28 doesn't care for cinnamon but he enjoyed this too. We have this on our must do list for our next trip. However I noticed last week it is no longer listed on the online menu for Trail’s End. We’re really hoping it hasn’t disappeared like our favorite cinnamon pretzel from El Mercado.

We stopped by Tri-Circle-D Ranch to say hello to the horses.

Eventually we took the boat back to Magic Kingdom and the monorail to the TTC. We drove back to the Swan and our sons wanted to stop by the Blue Ribbon Corn Dog stand to get the Giant Mozzarella Stick: Giant Mozzarella Stick, coated in Garlic and Italian seasoned Panko Bread Crumbs. Served with Marinara sauce and a bag of chips.

They both really enjoyed these! They are fans of the Blue Ribbon Corn Dog stand. DH and I didn't get anything as we were still full from Boma and Buckaroo Bread.

We still had some time before our sons had to leave and we were very hot after all the walking. So, we changed into our suits and headed to the Grotto pool at the Swan/Dolphin. Even though we have stayed at the Swan a couple times, we’ve never had time to enjoy the pool. It was awesome! It was a great way to cool off and relax before bringing them to the airport.

Eventually we dropped them off at the airport and headed back for our last night at the Swan. DH wanted to watch the NASCAR race that night so we initially decided to pick up something for dinner that we could eat back at the room. I had seen that Trattoria Al Forno had “to-go” options in the app so as we got closer, I attempted to place an order, only to discover that it wasn’t available after all. We wanted to eat somewhere quick and close so we headed over to the Fountain at the Dolphin. We’ve eaten here previously and found the food to be quite good and the service excellent.

We were seated promptly and our server took our order. We decided to share the Little Gem Caesar Salad and I added grilled chicken.

What you may notice from this picture is there is no chicken. More on that later. This salad was very basic, like something you would get in a cafeteria. There wasn’t much dressing and the lettuce had brown edges.

We also shared the Fountain Smash Burger: Certified Angus Beef, Griddled Onions, Crispy Lettuce, Farmers Tomatoes, American Cheese, Locally Baked Bun

AD_4nXdTrU_LUPp7ocGflSOvDeSIDGkw9z5F6F_zEACC2gt38wt1lOZvLGx5UmcdlL-I1-OyeRQbk5l8c0wjCFyjMN--axLk9lxz75H5bQ74eA1QeHU68XFI1N-D9XOKBkpR4IALz0UU

As you may also notice, this is not a smash burger. It is an overcooked, dried out tasteless standard burger on a stale bun. It was awful. They have updated their menu and this burger is not nearly as good as the Fountain Signature Burger we had in 2023.

Shortly after we received our food, the host came over and sat down next to me. (We were at a banquette style table. I was seated on the bench and DH was across from me in a chair.) The host said he wanted to ask if we were okay if a couple with a service dog was seated at the table next to us (basically one person would be seated on the same bench as me at the adjacent table.) We told him that was perfectly fine but that we appreciated that he asked. Then, since we hadn’t seen our server since he took our order, we pointed out that our salad didn’t come with the added chicken. We told him it was no big deal but we wanted to make sure we weren’t going to be billed the additional $10 for the missing chicken. He assured us that he would make sure it wasn’t on the bill.

A few minutes later a manager came by and said he was told we didn’t get the chicken on our salad and we were to be assured we wouldn’t be charged for it. We thanked him and again reiterated it wasn’t a big deal, we just didn’t want the additional charge for something we didn’t get.

Now, back to the “service dog”. The couple was seated next to us with their dog but unfortunately this was not actually a trained service dog. The dog was jumping around, banging his head under the table and hitting my legs as he wagged his tail. He was completely out of control. To top it all off, he was also flatulent. It was not a pleasant dining experience to say the least.

As we hurried to finish our lousy burger and salad, our original server finally stopped by the table. He said to us, “I just wanted to let you know that the reason you didn’t get chicken on your salad is that you never ordered it.” I was stunned that a server would speak like that to a guest. I calmly responded, “I did say I would like to add grilled chicken. You may not have heard me, but I most definitely said it.” He didn’t say anything further and simply walked away.

So, we paid our bill, leaving only a 10% tip since our service was clearly not stellar and headed back to our room to watch the race.

I don’t know what has happened to the Fountain but it has clearly gone downhill. The food and the service were not good at all. After we returned home, someone posted a link to an article in the “Swan and Dolphin Resort Thread” that said that the Fountain had gone downhill. Our experience proved that to be the case, sadly.

Despite our lousy dinner, we had a nice relaxing evening watching the NASCAR race before heading to bed for our last night in Florida.

Total Steps: 25116

Up next…in search of burger redemption before we began our drive back home.

Wow I was at the Fountain in June and the Smash Burger was great. It was huge and hung out of the bun which was fresh and also grilled. I noticed yours was served in a plate but mine was served on a metal square pan with the fries in a small mesh basket. We were planning to return there during our next visit but may have to reconsider

Your visit was after ours so maybe they improved it or maybe we just hit an off night. They split the burger ahead of time for us so that's probably why ours came on a plate. Glad to hear yours was great!

That was a pretty sad looking salad. Not sure chicken would have helped LOL. And that burger was cooked to death. Also can’t believe how rude your server was! Sorry you had such a lousy experience.

Would've had to be some amazing chicken, lol!
And that burger was cooked to death.
It sure was! They didn't ask us how we wanted it but usually smash burgers are thin patties and they don't ask so we weren't surprised when they didn't. This was not at all what we expected.
Also can’t believe how rude your server was! Sorry you had such a lousy experience.
We couldn't believe it either. In the past our servers at the Fountain were above and beyond excellent. Not this time. We were glad the boys weren't there for this meal!

I probably wouldn’t have been able to fit the buckaboo bread after that breakfast. I think that’s part of my problem with getting snacks. 🙁
I think I’d be a fan of the corn dog stand too!!

As you may also notice, this is not a smash burger. It is an overcooked, dried out tasteless standard burger on a stale bun. It was awful. They have updated their menu and this burger is not nearly as good as the Fountain Signature Burger we had in 2023.
It’s so weird how meals can change that drastically from one visit to the next. So unfortunate.

Why did the manager need to come over and say the same as the server. 🤷🏻‍♀️
It really annoys me that Disney doesn’t enforce the service dog rule. I definitely would’ve complained to a manager about that ridiculousness. We love our dogs but would never bring them to a restaurant even if regular dogs are allowed.

I cannot believe that server even had the nerve to say something like that!
That is terrible customer service.
Are the servers CMs? The Swan and Dolphin aren’t owned by Disney right?
So, we paid our bill, leaving only a 10% tip since our service was clearly not stellar and headed back to our room to watch the race.

I don’t know what has happened to the Fountain but it has clearly gone downhill. The food and the service were not good at all. After we returned home, someone posted a link to an article in the “Swan and Dolphin Resort Thread” that said that the Fountain had gone downhill. Our experience proved that to be the case, sadly.

Despite our lousy dinner, we had a nice relaxing evening watching the NASCAR race before heading to bed for our last night in Florida.
Glad you had a relaxing evening.
I am amazed by the amount of steps you did multiple days in a row. Do you go like all day all night?
We can’t do that anymore. I recently developed plantar fasciitis and my limit is usually 4 hours at a time. I did 20,000 steps on Monday bc I was meeting a friend who was there for the first time. I was exhausted!!! 😳
Total Steps: 25116

Up next…in search of burger redemption before we began our drive back home.

I guess with 4 people it is easier to sample everything. That’s great!
I love deviled eggs and have never seen them in a buffet. That would be a reason for me to try it there.
He said they were really good! I didn't try them.
I love that they have a hidden Minnie!
Me too! The family didn't agree with me that it was one but the CM confirmed it!
Buckaboo bread definitely looks yummy and of course your DS would want to try it.
He was funny. He said "you can't rave about something all week and then not have me try it!"
The horses are so beautiful!!
They are!
I probably wouldn’t have been able to fit the buckaboo bread after that breakfast. I think that’s part of my problem with getting snacks. 🙁
I think I’d be a fan of the corn dog stand too!!
I actually only had the one plate at Boma 'cuz I was still so full from our previous meals. Probably didn't get my money's worth but it was still really good.
Whenever we stay on property (which is once a year), we always make time for the pool. It’s usually a nice afternoon break before we head out for dinner and the parks again.
We never go to the pool but we need to make time for it in the future. It was really nice!
It’s so weird how meals can change that drastically from one visit to the next. So unfortunate.
It is so weird!
Why did the manager need to come over and say the same as the server. 🤷🏻‍♀️
I don't know. We thought it was strange at the time. We didn't complain or get angry, we just asked them to make sure we weren't charged and told them it was really no big deal.
It really annoys me that Disney doesn’t enforce the service dog rule. I definitely would’ve complained to a manager about that ridiculousness. We love our dogs but would never bring them to a restaurant even if regular dogs are allowed.
We love dogs too but that was just not a great situation.
I cannot believe that server even had the nerve to say something like that!
That is terrible customer service.
Are the servers CMs? The Swan and Dolphin aren’t owned by Disney right?
Judging from his reaction, he must've gotten in trouble from that manager which is so weird because we kept saying it wasn't a big deal. They are not CMs they are Marriott employees but they're usually excellent.
Glad you had a relaxing evening.
I am amazed by the amount of steps you did multiple days in a row. Do you go like all day all night?
We do go all day and night although our nights end a little earlier than they used to, lol. When the kids were younger we'd go from open to close every day.
We can’t do that anymore. I recently developed plantar fasciitis and my limit is usually 4 hours at a time. I did 20,000 steps on Monday bc I was meeting a friend who was there for the first time. I was exhausted!!! 😳
Plantar fasciitis is the worst! I used to get it quite a bit. I've found that quality footwear makes a huge difference. I only buy Sauconys now and I replace them every 6 months due to all the walking I do even at home. The plantar fasciitis went away a few years ago once I did that (along with icing, stretching, and Alleve). I have been battling achilles tendonitis now though since 2023 but what's weird is that my ankle felt better in Disney with all those steps. It doesn't make any sense but it's almost like all the walking was good for it...or maybe it was the cookies, lol!

Yes footwear makes a huge difference!! I only wear Brooks now which have helped a lot. But it doesn’t make it totally go away. 😩I can walk a lot further than in the past.
You are real park commandos! We used to be when the kids were little too. My parents used to come with us a lot and we couldn’t understand why they couldn’t keep up or need to go back early. Now I know!!! 🤣🤣

5/19 Last Day in Orlando
For our last “free” breakfast at the Swan, we changed things up a bit and got a chocolate chip muffin and fresh fruit.

AD_4nXewqTPC2Qpx3PndygqQkWiZWR-V5Ihykf73U23dTas1qhFxXsPMBPU2sCa34iODmSMH99EYLkX19y8hfmCbt77Vwf9PA8iBx9KxXDCzICHffBkphTnkVJyZh63OrLfO3DH64TzYDg

The Chocolate Chip muffin was very good with lots of chocolate chips.

AD_4nXepqe2m3_ddIm2dB24J4LUcIQScnLq89Ao53Ip8N2sNbZM9NIdwKHipTT6Xnyr4o7k8AzKbbMwsXUkAxcnGQrFy7k_RxD7sOlOdEypQQtquy0B_1C46e-0EsdoCY0XmmUYXNbzPKw

The fresh fruit was just okay. It had a lot of honey dew and cantaloupe, otherwise known as “filler fruit”. It was fine but pretty much grocery store pre-packaged fruit.

After breakfast, we checked out of the Swan and brought our luggage down to our car. We then walked over to Epcot for just a few more hours of fun.

The flowers are just so beautiful in Epcot during the Flower & Garden Festival, we just had to see them one more time.

AD_4nXd-Q1M2TjXGfyvr-Zd1oD3HWK0Q4KPXW7rzrQVX7YoAZ7Rc5wkto8mkD1vIAL3VCesINJSARDlycL41UI0qvCPTSpa63g0fnJX39j3B5-DM7KEg33TKs2Y0aAPo__VrwIdkktGD4g

We rode Journey Into Imagination and said “hello” to Figment. We then rode Living with the Land and Spaceship Earth. We stopped next at the Creations Shop since I hadn’t had a chance to get my AP Magnet and then took a lap around the World Showcase going from Mexico to France. We started our walk back to the Swan and stopped in the Boardwalk gift shop, the Screen Door. We ordered apple slushies after having tried a free sample the day before and loving it.

This was very good. It tasted like frozen cinnamon apple sauce. We gave this an A.

Once we returned to our car, we headed for one last stop at Disney Springs. After our burger-disappointment the night before, we needed redemption so we headed straight for D-Luxe Burger and shared our favorite burger, the Bacon & Blue Burger: Two-pressed Signature-blend Patties with Bacon, Onion Jam, Blue Cheese, Lettuce, and Tomato

AD_4nXfORfCFWsde9hrARqOZQ6MSUeE6LWkhE7OEHnSrJpHUB5TN_l7xuPl-i-slM-bSI4V21hiV7Zq4z9C4Q34a-o6-tBURngozDlNOoAVKzu6EFIEpIAuankhapdiEIWIzpTsDEOLhRg

This was lightyears better than the previous night! So good!

We also of course shared an order of fries.

AD_4nXf9UVTj4VSEUjNgaRC1SWn-U9HfN75r5xGqKQX4hyFFmY_oCKJRixL_EihwVUfMrjy2yKbp81DDKPcsE2pMANSHn9hX47lZduYNJE9eMhZcBuaptqh3pKmcvjgaKAITcPjgWYZDIg

Still the best fries on property! D-Luxe Burger earned another A-.

As we passed Gideon’s, there was no line so of course we needed to stop in for some treats for the road trip back home.

We ordered our new favorite cookie, the Pistachio Toffee Cookie.

AD_4nXeGXpF0ylSkTWsdJpYZvbt3G9gAYc-kMn3ddvNX9GsD9aZNdGKU-JLx0U8bN5-C5CZDJyAbFFBvIxEz3BL7cL0OhFH76Q8gfeNS_9rNhxZm47kFJUngHZWN28SxoJ1g73Mc6CxA

This cookie is so good! We can’t believe we avoided it for the past few years. A+!

We also picked up some Gideon’s Bites and a slice of Cookies & Cream cake for later.

We finished getting our steps for the day and then reluctantly said goodbye to Disney Springs and headed off to Santee, SC.

Along the way we stopped for dinner at Chick-Fil-A in Pooler, GA. We shared a Market Salad with grilled chicken (and we actually got the grilled chicken).

AD_4nXcRZY5QzPgy63iecQ73hdTyaV87atf9e4gmG7vRJpKPea8UUF2elzxm_AecNhGtj8nkhtKfwoaYjYyX3_fwJixDC5f7-tnaTfRuMN7w50LMH4GsGwMpIKTR6JPLjgYYJjKlRVQ7

This salad was so good! Turns out we got grilled chicken salad redemption too. We give Chick-Fil-A salads an A.

For dessert, we ate Gideon’s Bites as we drove. Gideon’s was celebrating half-way to Halloween so the bites were chocolate covered Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein cookie bites.

We had the Frankenstein Bite: “The Frankenstein is a Halloween month celebration, made from pieces and parts of all the candies you want in your bag, and topped with M&M’s that we lovingly place on the top to be sure you get all the colors. Break it open and you’ll find crushed Oreo Double Stuff and Chocolate Pieces.”

This cookie was very tasty! The chocolate coating is of such high quality. We gave it an A.

Eventually we reached Santee, SC and checked into the Fairfield Inn & Suites. We decided to have an evening snack and shared the Cookies & Cream cake from Gideon’s. Here is my half:

AD_4nXfU9peG1juISx9troKwt77q5JUbcqz0yWCiwcNnSsTAAu-rL59d8R1dAXLvjRwigNB8016VewjpZoCWCmdG7TQWFIBKpqHOVWmn4GITw5SKoudnOI4Ac9iyWCQFmMRZLGOmD1Nyyw

The cookies & cream buttercream was very sweet but very good. The chocolate cake was also moist and tasty. Our only issue was that recently it seems the ratio of buttercream to cake is off, there isn’t enough actual cake. We liked this cake slightly more than the Chocolate Churro cake. We gave it a B+.

Total Steps: 17143

Up next…heading to Virginia.

We started our morning off by introducing our sons to one of our favorite breakfast buffets, Boma! Between the four of us I think we sampled everything on the buffet! Here’s our first four plates.
That all looks so good! We have anADR here for October and I'm debating on whether or not to keep it. I don't do well with buffets...I just can't eat that much at once and I tend to overdo it and feel gross after. DH really wants to ty this one though so we shall see.

Ooooooo...that looks good. Someone else posted that they have a Fried Green Tomato sandwich over there so between that and this I think we need to take a trip over there!

As you may also notice, this is not a smash burger. It is an overcooked, dried out tasteless standard burger on a stale bun. It was awful.
Ewwww...it doesn't looks good at all.

Shortly after we received our food, the host came over and sat down next to me. (
Weird.

Now, back to the “service dog”. The couple was seated next to us with their dog but unfortunately this was not actually a trained service dog. That is super rude and takes a lot of nerve. What a jerk. And what a terrible experience! I have been wanting to try this place because they have a PB & J milkshake on the menu and DH loves those, but I think we'll skip it.

The flowers are just so beautiful in Epcot during the Flower & Garden Festival, we just had to see them one more time.

Now THAT looks like a good burger 😋

As we passed Gideon’s, there was no line so of course we needed to stop in for some treats for the road trip back home.
Perfect road snack!

Looked like such a fun trip and I had fun folliwong along! DH and I are driving down from CT on October 15th. We like to get to Brunswick, GA so we made a Hampton Inn reservation for that night. It's such a long ride which I don't mind going down but I hate driving home so he'll drop me off at MCO and I'll fly and he'll drive back by himself. He says he doesn't mind at all which seems crazy!

It is really good. This last time I made myself stick to one plate to avoid that gross feeling afterwards.

Ooooooo...that looks good. Someone else posted that they have a Fried Green Tomato sandwich over there so between that and this I think we need to take a trip over there!
A lot of the food at Trail's End looks really good. I asked a Vlogger to go check to see if they still have Buckaroo Bread, since it's missing from the online menu. They said they would check it out. I'm hoping it's still there.
Ewwww...it doesn't looks good at all.
It was bad!
It was awkward when he came and sat down.
Oh my goodness...gross.
That it was!
That is super rude and takes a lot of nerve. What a jerk. And what a terrible experience! I have been wanting to try this place because they have a PB & J milkshake on the menu and DH loves those, but I think we'll skip it.
We've had the PB&J milkshake and it was excellent. Sadly that was another thing they eliminated when they changed the menu.
Now THAT looks like a good burger 😋
We love that burger!
Perfect road snack!
Yes!

I'm with you! I don't mind the drive down but the drive back is horrendous. Great idea to fly home! Good thing your DH doesn't mind driving back solo. We're heading down the end of October. Can't wait! Thanks for following along!

5/20 Our Last Stop Before Home

After another great stay at the Fairfield Inn & Suites, Santee, we checked out pretty early and headed up Route 95. We stopped in Wilson, NC for lunch at Moe’s Southwest Grill, a place we stopped on a previous trip. We both ordered the homewrecker bowl with chicken.

AD_4nXfc8_6PIEo1h38bl-yBvMAi1vYQNOLoblwCgN6FnjG48DzdbMgIV-CCrry-EWFtHQnGMSpTtMW45okWqb3ElESOjiLrMQWZXeCKCwiQSkcvF7B5olCWAXuLaQPXURfK7wByvu0eiQ

Of all the similar Tex-Mex fast food establishments, Moe’s is our favorite over Chipotle and Pancheros. We once again enjoyed the complementary chips and various salsas along with our bowl full of goodness. DH also likes that they have a Freestyle Machine.

For dessert, we had some of our Bride of Frankenstein bites as we drove along. This cookie is “created in the same mold as the Frank Cookie but features White Chocolate, Golden Oreos, and M&M's!”

AD_4nXfehJQeYJUHQ3vNQT4r6CW4j2_YJ4-noqK7IuLg9RWA1eeToPewJPL3SjJEBQHit-tMq96K8zVSgmvWS9c4MgUCtpfNL7NypTxPm4WnSmIXksLjSiVyCLt5P1PX1ovz6Tkqix_LzQ

While this was also very good, we preferred the Frankenstein cookie.

Our drive to Stafford, VA was uneventful and we arrived in time to go for a walk to get our steps. We walked around Government Island which was a beautiful little park.

Once we got all our steps, we checked into the Fairfield Inn & Suites, Quantico/Stafford. When we received our room assignment we asked if it was on the back of the building, as we’ve noticed a lot of road noise on the front. The clerk told us it was actually facing the front of the building but she could move us to a room in the back, which was really nice of her. We brought our things up to the room and then headed next door to El Gran Charro, another restaurant we’ve tried previously. Apparently we hadn't had our Tex Mex fill for the day. We started with the complementary chips salsa and garlic ranch dip.

AD_4nXdLHbi_dgBThOW8ddQy4wcaUNLOx6yThRSI_dMzHPV6DPowRdQwl366CQ3MD_0NE6g0uPEmR9aMp8hAp05I0uF0S-t5kTbPqLAeDpfXk9Z4S-Sl9DoXNLNWLtODBc9PRKy6y2aFAg

These chips are so fresh and perfectly salted. The salsa is delicious but my favorite is the creamy garlic ranch dip. So unique and tasty!

DH ordered the same thing he had before, the Al Pastor Tacos.

AD_4nXciYQ_6Y1pHhwQJjYgUhoZj_CI-RNiAPZyBD4EkrdKTHvtoV94XTBcQrI4eM67yHEkx325cJJRGf9Dstde0SqAgMIai7LNYFRoYF0YUriWaehJKraaMjOAiTqGm4GT-R64b0wXwzg

They came with some toppings as well as sides of rice and refried beans.

He loved this meal just as much as the first time we ate there!

Last time I ordered shrimp tacos but decided to get the chicken fajitas this time.

My fajitas were excellent. The refried beans and rice were also very good. This is such a great restaurant. The service is friendly and efficient, the food is tasty and the price is very reasonable. It’s a great place to stop off route 95. I suggested it to my parents last year when they drove to Florida and they had a wonderful experience there as well.

We returned to our room and got ourselves ready for the following day. Our plan was to leave the hotel by 5:00 am to try and beat rush hour traffic around Washington, DC so we consolidated our things into one suitcase and brought everything we weren’t going to need back down to the car. As we were going through the lobby with the suitcase the desk clerk looked at us in shock, like we were leaving already. When we came back in I explained that we were just trying to get ready for a quick departure at 5 am. She told us that we needed to leave even earlier if we wanted to beat the traffic. We headed up to bed to try to get some sleep before our early departure. We aimed to leave by 5:00 at the very latest.

Total steps for 5/20: 11511

5/21 The Final Leg of Our Journey

We woke up at 4:30 am and were on the road by 4:50. Sadly the desk clerk was correct we were NOT early enough to beat rush hour traffic. I can’t even describe in words the utter chaos we experienced. Cars came flying up the on ramps and just jammed themselves in at high speeds forcing those already on the road to slam their brakes as hard as possible. I don't know how we didn't see accidents. I watched one car come up and just drive right at the car in front of us. I braced myself for a crash but somehow they didn’t hit as we hit our brakes too to avoid rear-ending the car in front of us.

The drive up 95 took so long we didn’t want to stop long for lunch so we decided to just stop at a roadside rest area in Connecticut for gas, restrooms, and a quick lunch. As we emerged from our car we were hit with cold, damp weather. Yup welcome back to New England! We planned on sharing a footlong turkey sub from Subway (remember the jingle, $5 footlong?). Well, the footlong at this rest area was over $17! (Doesn’t quite fit the jingle). Hungry as we were, we weren’t willing to pay that for a Subway sub. Instead, we went to McDonald’s and forked over $9 for two large sodas, which is also outrageous, but we had just been paying $4.79 for sodas at Disney so it was a bargain, lol. We then went back to our car and made pb&j sandwiches to go with our sodas.

After our penny pincher lunch, we trudged home slowly. It was very frustrating that most of 95 through Connecticut was down to one lane with construction barrels blocking the other lane and absolutely no sign of construction work being done anywhere. We did notice that the State Troopers found it convenient to avoid traffic by driving down the construction lanes. Very annoying.

The entire drive home was not good at all. We experienced all kinds of slowdowns, road construction, and stopped traffic. It was so bad that we will never attempt that drive along 95 from DC to Mass ever again. While it was certainly a frustrating ride home, we had a phenomenal trip. The time we spent just the two of us and then with our sons couldn’t have been any better. As we drove home we were already planning our next trip.

Up next…final rankings
