Hi Everyone! Thanks for the warm welcome! Wow, posts pile up quickly, I can see I need to check in at least every day! And I'm going to have to do a lot more posting to move up to the next color on CRASH's list!

I've been enjoying reading all the posts - Michelle - glad to meet another twinmom! Loved the Jr mystery... Monica - my heart is going out to you with your decision. I honestly don't know what I would do, but I know you will make the right decision for you.

BTW, I want to change my login name. Is that possible?

BTW, I want to change my login name. Is that possible?

I don't think so, but you might post that question over on the tech support board - I'm sure they'll know. Right now your post count is so low that it might be easier to re-register.

Many times I've had trips planned but then he gets in trouble. We end up going anyway because it was past the point of being able to cancel without losing all my money. Unfortunately this trip was past the cancellation point too. But I can change the ressie to another person without any penalty as long as I do it by next week.

I guess I held this info back because with it, it sort of makes the decison a no brainer. At least for anyone else who hears it. But it's not a no brainer to me. I wanted him to be able to go so badly. I guess now I'll leave him home, but tell him about the TOAL so that he knows he's got to make it through next year or else he'll be sitting at home again. Each trip was going to be a surprise announcement at the end of the school year. But I think if I use this year's as an example that may give him the incentive straighten up.

This is (IMHO) one of the hardest things about being a parent - *you* want to go with him, but what he really needs is the lesson in consequences. It's heartbreaking to sacrafice something you want to do with him (not to mention the money in most cases).

I don't know if you've made your decision yet (I'm still ketchuping), but as hard as it is I'd vote for going with your mom and showing your SPT that there are consequences to his actions (and that you *will* lower the boom if necessary)

Good luck & :grouphug:

Just a passing thought... We have some dear friends who would love to go on this cruise with us, so if anyone cancels (or knows someone who cancels) would you mind PM-ing me? That way we could call in just in time. :hippie:

Otherwise, we're down to waiting until the 90 day mark and crossing our fingers.

Hello All

Hi Tina - We are in West Chicago (the town - not West side of Chicago the city) - so about 20 miles from you.

We don't have the 17 year cicadas in our town. The bugs only manage to move about 10 feet each 17 years, so towns that didn't have them before, don't have them now either. I know some areas are just crawling with them and I am sure I would hate that - I'm not too fond of things with 6 or more legs!

You will find that gas prices vary wildly around here. We tend to watch prices everywhere we go around the area and have seen as large as a 30 cents difference per gallon over just 10 to 15 miles. My DH can nearly always get gas for 15 to 20 cents less than I can - he works in Carpentersville and it is almost always cheaper there than near our home. Also, prices are always higher in the summer when we have to use the special EPA blend in this area. You can always tell in the spring when the stations have to switch over because the price jumps overnight.

It has been a while since anyone I know fried a hard drive, but if you Google Hard Drive recovery there should be a large number of hits for companies that salvage data from drives. The last time I know someone who did this, we found that the prices varied a lot so it was worth shopping around. Maybe someone here has some experience with this and can recommend a place...

I can tell you Downers Grove was covered with those bugs.:scared1: I haven't really driven out of my comfort zone yet.........Glad to hear your not far away. Are you going to the mini-meet?

Unfortunately, Chicagoland has some of the highest gas prices in the nation. I don't have any idea why. The further west you go, the cheaper it gets. For example, here in Bolingbrook, I paid $3.19. It was $3.23 in Woodridge and $3.31 at the BP in Arlington Heights.

I have a 13-year-old, but since he's a boy, I doubt he has much in common with your DD unless she's into video games.

Well at least the kids are the same age I will tell her I know someone will be at meet that is her age. I just won't mention that it is a boy.:rolleyes1
I also have noticed gas price changes from one block to another !!! We took DD to navy pier last Sunday for a break and she took a picture of the gas price of 3.84. Grant you that was the city but even in Woodridge is so much more expensive then what I was paying in NY.

pic-data-recovery.jpg

Not true....

... your hard drive SHOULD be salvagable... it is really a matter of WHO you know (that would do it for free) or what IF you're willing to pay for the data recovery. Even HDs that have been submerged under water or crushed can be salvaged - provided the platters were not physically destroied - or the data somehow corrupted beyond recovery.

I don't know who you might want to use in CHicago - I have a friend who might take a look at it and recover your data free - but we live out here in California. My pal who would do it is a technology wiz - and has worked for Boeing Aerospace and Homeland Security as a sort of emerging technology expert with computers. He's one of my oldest and best friends and sometimes all I need do is buy him lunch. Well... Lately that's been a rare event.... as I've done some sizable and unusual favors for him lately - So he's been working to even out the score with me. Not that I'm counting.. mind you. Friends help each other out with favors in times of need, eh?

WIth that in mind - you suppose you can get the hard drive out and ship it to me? Or do you know WHAT the problem is that makes data recovery so difficlut? Having a local recovery firm do it could run you $40-50 an hour and generally be several hundred. Or just bring it to one of those companies and get a quote on the cost to recover the data. OR... google data recovery ... and you'll see a few web based companies offerring thier services.

Or if you like PM me and I'll see what I can do if ya wanna ship the drive to me...

Tom aw :grouphug: Thank you so much for you kindness ! This morning's news is that Chuck's ITT guys are confident they can at least save my info. So fingers crossed, I won't give up because there is to much for me to lose.

My computer can't be saved.:sad1: :sad1: :sad1: I am not upset about having to replace it, just all the photo's and info I had is gone forever. All of my address & phone numbers, you name it gone.:sad1: :sad1:

I used to think "gone" was "gone", but can relay a story that might give you some hope. A colleague of mine in Pensacola was hit by one of the hurricanes a couple of years ago. She, DH and DD were in the house as the water rose to between the front door handle & the dead bolt. A week later, she found her laptop, which had been completely submerged .. for days. When she opened the lid and held up the machine, chunks of salt fell out of the keyboard, the CD drive and all the attachment plugs.

Her machine had the only copy of a project we'd been working on for months. She shipped it to the I/T guys, who were able to recover the files on her hard drive. We work for IBM and it was an IBM laptop. They shot an ad using her story.

I don't have any contacts in Chicago, but there are folks who know how to do this. Good luck!

Thanks for sharing, I hate to admit this but my downfall was ALOT of dust inside and when computer was moved from NY to Chicago it messed everything up. :rolleyes1

J.R: I think I forgot to thank you for dreams number !:goodvibes Very much appreciated.

Call on the cell anytime after 9pm. or if I ever get off the computer (I do my job on the computer too)anytime.:rotfl2:

We had a little conference call last night but I did not have your phone number yet. I think we will have a 5 family meet!!!:yay: :woohoo:

Evening everyone !

I've been in a Holiday Inn all day today attending a conference.:(.

It's been a long day so I've decided to have a day off tomorrow - it's Alex's birthday so I'll use that as an excuse.:)

Just right now - my son does not deserve to go. Either way, its a hard one for you. Just whatever you chose to do - don't secondguess yourself. You are doing the best that you can.

I read both stories with great saddness and send you both a :grouphug:

I am so thankful that my DS (34yo) was really a very good child his whole life. I often tell him that everytime I have seen or heard of unruly behavior that when I see him that I am going to kiss him right on the lips. :goodvibes

Unfortunately not everyone is as lucky as we were. :sad2:

She's baaaack. Sheez. June was like h**l month. I basically wasn't home for the entire month. Some for business, and some for pleasure.

DS10 and I just got back from 12 days in Montana for an 8 dog show circuit (Billings, Great Falls, Missoula). We got dumped a lot, but won on the last day - so it was worth it. Rather than coming home with a finished Champion, I'm coming home with half a champion. :confused3 Still - we had a great time. And Montana was beautiful!! We stopped at Yellowstone on the way there and Jakob took a bunch of pictures. I'll have to upload some and share.

Looks like I'm only 250 pages behind - which for 3+ weeks isn't too terrible. Of course, I won't have a chance to read it all - I'll have to go catch the summaries!

I hope it's all been good news and lovely weather since I've been gone...

Yes, we'll be at the mini-meet. DS will be with us, but since he is only 8 he is probably more of an annoyance to 13 year olds!

Good luck with your hard drive :thumbsup2
