This may not be what you're expecting...

... TWO main points. As you cited you're under 40 and in good health... and trip insurance is a fair decision when you have someone older and or with chronic or... or potentially unstable health conditions. However - for the other folks consider... are you planning on doing so high risk shore excursions? Are you accident prone? Your your travel plans conservative with arrival a day or more early and return flights a day or more AFTER we dock in Florida? And ... is the financial reserve currently maintained (or earning power) such that travel disruption or emergencies would bust the bank? Granted - the wildly unexpected could happen to anyone anytime... but it tends not to happen regularly.

As such in point one - barring unusual circumstances with heightened risk - I generally do without trip insurance.

Point two, if travel emergencies and disruptions threaten to break the bank - but the cost of travel insurance is affordable - then you might want it for PEACE of mind. Circumstances will vary in justifying or discouraging this.

Now - exactly how much was this travel insurance going to cost you? :confused3

I gotta go now.... we're meeting friends to see the NIM Adventure movie - then we're off for that working farm with the Daisey Troop and friends. I'll try to post pictures to share later.

That has always been my idea, we don't really need it as we are in good health etc. We always come in a day or two early and if we miss the flight home, it won't bankrupt us. That is why I was thinking the medical evacuation might be the only thing we need. It was about $350 for all 7 of us. I didn't think that was too bad just to cover an extreme emergency.

All of our parents are in the low 60's and in good health too, so an emergency with them would have a low chance of occurance. What to do? What to do? :confused3 :confused3

Happy Anniversary
Bill & Laura!

Cake_-_Happy_Anniversary.jpg

pirate: 'ing. Happy Anniversary! Celebrate with a big juicy stake at the 50 Yard Line- unless, of course, it is no longer super yummy!

My DH, Bill and oldest DD Megan are at Bill's family church about 45 miles away today for "Cemetary Day". I usually go but got to beg out since my nose looks like it has train tracks on it (the stitches).
Instead youngest DD, Miranda and I met my Dad at our church. I was telling my Dad at lunch after church that I was sure I was going to get stuck being buried at this church. I have only been to this town 4 times and it is population 20 (not a mistype). Bill's family has been buried here for many generations and he feels very strongly about being buried there.
Well sure enough I get a call asking if it is OK for him to buy 4 plots there. What the heck do I care- I'm dead! I told him to do whatever he wants since it is obviously important for him to snatch up the rest of the plots close to his family.
It feels so funny to be mature enough to actually think, and buy, cemetary plots.
So.... lucky me will probably getting a plot for Mothers Day! :rotfl:

Most, if not all, of the "package" policies include Medical Evacuation coverage to some degree. For example, I think the basic TravelGuard package policies cover at least $100,000 medical evacuation coverage, and that's per person. However, as you considered, the risk is extremely low in requiring a medical evacuation. I think the most common claim is onboard illness to help pay for onboard medical bills and if you are quarantined to your room, the insurer will reimbursement you each day you aren't able to enjoy the trip.

I think the peace of mind if there is a requirement to cancel or interrupt the trip due to a family illness or death and be reimbursed is also worth the price of insurance. Some more expensive policies allow cancellations for more broad reasons like "work obligations" or "any reason".

Also, If you plan on renting a car at any of the ports, many of the policies will help cover damage to the rental car.

As for the hurricane coverage, if the trip is disrupted for at least 24 hours, including missed ports or early disembarkation, then travel insurance may reimburse you for those days. The most the cruiseline may offer is a discount on a future cruise or some onboard drinks to compensate for missing a port. You aren't likely to get reimbursed by DCL for missing Castaway Cay.

When you really look at the policies, even the basic ones are generally good. The differences with the "deluxe" and "basic" policies are generally:

1) the amount reimbursed in the event of a claim (i.e is it $2,500 for lost baggage or $500?) and;

2) covered cancellation/delay reasons (i.e Does it cover the Financial Default of airline? Does it pay only on death or illness? Is a work related cancellation covered? Can I cancel for any reason? What is a travel delay? Is it 5 hours, 12 hours or 24 hours?).

I've used two plans in the past. Last summer I used TravelSafe - the key feature I wanted there was that they convered the fees to "rebank" frequent flyer miles in case of cancellation - and we flew with miles.

This time we got an additional TravelGuard policy with a low limit - but paid extra for the higher medical evac and to make their medical coverage primary (they are one of the few that have that option).

We got that in addition to the DCL policy - it's not great, but if you do cancel or can't go for any reason they credit all the non-refundable costs towards another cruise within 12 months.

I never used to get the insurance, and my TA talked me into it a couple of years ago.
Turns out, I was VERY glad I did. We had to cancel the Christmas cruise on Norwegian because DH lost those two fingers....something I never would have dreamed would happen, as we're all usually very healthy too. And we got all of our money back except the cost of the insurance.
Same for my cancelled trip to Disneyland this past March. Cancelled because of my pneumonia, and got all the money back (very quickly, too!) except the cost of insurance.

It's actually very little to add on, but soooo worth it.

Wow, interesting, sorry to read the issues, but I do agree Travel insurance on cruising is important and not a lot of cost.

When my DSF passed away 14 years ago, my DH and I ended up purchasing our plots after seeing what my DM went through.

You're right. When DS was 6 we were supposed to be going to WDW for a surprise weekend at AKL. THe night before we were supposed to leave, DS fell and broke his elbow - he was in surgery getting the pins put in when we were supposed to be on the airplane. We had the insurance and got our money back very quickly. I will always get travel insurance, just for the peace of mind it brings if nothing else.

:bday: Happy Birthday Andrew :bday:

I never get Travel Insurance, however I always purchase Medical Evacuation Insurance when we are traveling outside the country. I have used MedJet for my past trips. I like that they have their own medical planes and personal. Since they have a "no health questions asked" policy I will be able to use them for this trip also.

About 5 years ago my FIL got stuck in Alaska (staph infection) before he was supposed to board his cruise and it cost him a fortune to get med vac'd back to Boston.

Going through my Disneyland bag and found some Visitor/Entertainment guides (mostly restaurant information) and a map of the Disneyland area, a map of some freeways and surrounding areas. I have 4 of those... I also have some Anaheim Resort Transit maps left and some Disneyland maps. If anyone is interested, please pm me your info and I'll get them in the mail some time this week.

When I hear someone say they don't need the insurance as they are healthy, it is the unexpected that you don't plan for. (See Staces response.) I spoke to a young woman once who told me a horror story of her dad getting knocked over by a wave hitting the ship and catching him off guard. They were thankful for the insurance as he had to be airlifted to Cal halfway to Hawaii.

I foung this article today from the OS. About how you can customize your Mickey Ears. http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/features_orlando/2008/04/make-your-own-m.html#more

Never ask if it's over!!! Never ask what else can happen!!!! Never think you've had enough!!!

Sitting a stop light today, minding my own business, got rear ended. No injuries, although I am starting to feel a bit stiff. Could be the stress, could be the accident.

Hope you're feeling ok today:hug:

Hi gang. We had a really nice get together today at the Star Wars exhibit at the Franklin Institute!

A really big thank you to Lisa for suggesting this. We got to meet Lisa (radioclash2), Laurie (MrsScooby), and Tom (tom31b) and their families. There were 17 of us in all. Everybody was so nice and the kids all got along wonderfully. I'll try to get the pictures downloaded from the camera and posted tomorrow.
Gotta thank everyone for being so patient with me:grouphug: I was worried that I wouldn't be able to chat with anyone (being hard of hearing), but with all of us being DCL planning nuts it didn't seem hard at all:upsidedow

We had a great time too !! It was also nice for the kids to meet. Wish I could find my camera.
I've gotta get the whole loading photos from camera to computer to photobucket to DIS figured out:confused:

We had a great time too! Can't wait for the cruise! Here is a group shot we took (figuring we would be in trouble if we didn't)...

Both Andrew and Kelly had a blast that day. Still trying to get him to smile in pics though:rolleyes:

A few more shots from today!

I forgot that the background was a blue screen:lmao: It wasn't until I got to the second one that I realized what you did:rotfl:

You had me there for a second until I saw the DCL logo in the bottom left corner. :rotfl2: Looks like you all had a great time. Since you did not label everyone I took some guesses.
Pretty close:laughing: You mixed me and Lisa up though. Mark, Lisa's brother, is the ? and Darren is DH.

We were overdressed for the beach

Just a bit;) :lmao:

OK Andrew, here's you a special Bunny with a pancake on it's head".....

No breeze. Totally packed from the special event..spent the day trying to find shade and water.. Overall..had a nice time but missed my DD.
