On the AC issue, wasn't one of the rumors that they would be adding something similar at the new Night Kingdom when it opens?

Yeah, that was one of the rumors. I've also heard DNK is on the backburner now. Besides frrom what I hear, the AC @ DNK iwuld be like a check-in area for DNK. I'm not going to pay $200-300 just to sit around a new AC for a short while then trapse around through the Savanah in the pitch black. DNK sounds like a great idea and one I'd probably do once, but I don't see how the AC would fit in for my tastes. I go there to drink and unwind.... not a good idea if you're going to have a face to face with a lion or tiger or bear. Oh my.

I'm about 1/2 way through McCullough's book. I think it's great, but I'm a history nerd - I would have loved it at 13 as well.

Good book, gets to be an easier read the further you get into it.

I'll second that.

Spolier alert: It the book almost seemed to end too quickly. He'd spent countless pages on the French and early US efforts then seemed to rush to the finish. Anyway, it was an invaluable read for the TOAL.

PBS has a Canal DVD which McCulloch narrates.

Got to run, have a flight to SNA to catch (just a biz day trip, not DL)

On our 2005 cruise down the coast we saw a pod of about 30 dolphins that put on quite a show for almost 30 mins. The flying fish are awesome and much bigger than you think.

There is always a chance to see whales but the odds will be against us. I have heard of some that live year round in Cabo. You know the whales that talk amongst themselves, "Hey do you really want to swim all the way up to Alaska this summer. Nah, lets stay here and enjoy the nachos and tequila. All I can say is "That just will not do!"

Figuring out those costs per day and applying to what I tip when I go out with friends while at home, that list is definitely a little "light." At least I know what they are recommending. I'll be doing a lot more than that . . . especially since this is the TOAL for the celebration of my 25th ordination anniversary. My parishioners were extremely generous to me over these past three weeks of celebrations and I intend to "share the wealth."

When I walk off the ship after it is all over, I want the CMs to have a little tear in their eyes because they felt totally appreciated!

Good book, gets to be an easier read the further you get into it.

I'm enjoying it. Just finished the first chapter of the American part.

I need to finish it so I can get to 100 Years of Solitude.
So far my reading list for TOAL includes:
The Yiddish Policeman's Union by Michael Chabon
Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Now I need to get the Walt Disney book Coral mentioned.
DH & I are going to share the new Jimmy Buffet book just for fluff.
Oh and I may re-read Old Man and the Sea
I'm still looking for a good pirate book.

I may be disappointed in Chabon's book - his The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay is really good. Huck Finn, Catcher in the Rye really good.

A reference to it in the Canal book reminded me - if you live travelogue-type books, Sailing Alone Around the World by Joshua Slocum is great. He was the first person to sail around the world solo. The man had a very dry sense of humor.

I was just reading a report from someone who went on the Mex Riviera cruise June 22-29, and this was very interesting (I hope we see things like this!):

SEA LIFE SEEN FROM SHIP: If you're patient, you might see some sea life from the ship. On our first day at sea, as we went down the Baja peninsula, there was a bonanza of sightings. There were whales, a large pod of dolphins, an school of enormous squid, and many flying fish. Flying fish look like enormous dragonflies emerging from under the forward end of the ship. Then they sail just above the water for as much as 50 yards before plopping themselves back in the water. Your kids will love them because they're quite bizarre. There are also large sea birds, like pelicans and frigate birds (which have a dark v-shaped tail). It seemed like the area around the tip of Baja had the most to see, so keep an eye out.

Ha! Happy to say, I have never tipped a cow.

I was not sure about this particular book on WD. Some seems like hatchet jobs. This one mentioned the most access to personal family and WD archives so I thought it would be at least realistic. So far, very good. It is about the same size as "Path between the Seas" but an easler read.

Now that we are getting closer, I am going to try to log in more. We have been doing lots of remodeling, went to the World for a week, and have been crazy busy. I can't believe this is coming up. ! Haven't been online much lately.

My DD 9, was thinking that the new Cheetah Girls movie will come out while we are onboard. She will LOVE that.

Still not facing how I am going to pack for 2 weeks!!! Hopefully, I will be meeting others in the laudromat.

Whoever arranged for Fr Mike to say Mass - great job. It will be something to go to Mass with all you DISers during the trip of a lifetime...

Got to get my kids over to the kids board...
