Lisa,

You POV is well taken.. and I must say I agree entirely with your POV. However, for what it's worth... I try to ASSUME every parent is trying to do the best they can as a parent. Obviously, just about everyone can stand for some improvement as a parent - myself included. However... if it were ME and our kids influenced by a situation like yours'... I'd be grumping initially... then MAYBE... (maybe not) ... I'd be thinking... OK... lets' forgive them ... but a part of me would probably hope to not find that girl in my daughters next dance class recital. AND, probably a bigger part of me would not be very forgiving IF anyone got hurt through lack of proper preparation.
.....
The notion I am suggesting is that we need to LEAD our kids when riding bikes, scooters or anything else. I am guilty of NOT keeping up except when the kids reach an interesection - where they are forbidden to cross without an adult. WELL.... since having heard this story I now lead my kids on rides anywhere. And, now it comes to pass that we KNEW the family who had this tragedy. We've been to the Hollywood Bowl with them - done neighborhood pot luck gatherings and such - but obviously we're not THAT close to them. And oddly enough we had not done much with them in a few months. Now we know why we had not seen much of the parents like we used to. [ Sigh ] .... Thier kids are one grade ahead of Julianna and Kelea respectively... so our kids are close in age but don't quite match up for some kinds of gatherings.

Actually, both this post and the one before it bring up good points - it's important not to judge too harshly until you've walked a few miles in the other person's shoes. Even the most concientious parents will have different perspectives and values.

For example: you might say based on this accident that it's always best to lead your kids when riding. However, there are others who will make the case that you should let the kids lead. Why? Because that way you can see how they ride and bring problems to their attention (problems you wouldn't see if you're in the lead). In fact, the first site I found when I looked for an answer to this question (www.helmets.org - they call themselves the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute) makes exactly that recommendation.

So who is right? Does choosing one approach over the other make one parent concientious and the other negligent? Accidents are possible either way.

We live in an extraordinarily risk averse society. But the truth (that nobody wants to acknowledge) is that humans err and nature runs its course, and some of those errors and events have terrible consequences. You can't eliminate all risk. To make things worse - the attempt to eliminate all risk is itself dangerous - you end up with kids who can't handle the the real world. To use this example - perhaps by always leading them you will avoid an accident, only to end up with a kid who gets into a terrible accident the first time they try to ride alone because they never received the observation and feedback they needed?

Frankly, I have no clue. In fact, I doubt there is any clear right or wrong answer. But like you, I tend to assume that every parent is doing their best - even when I totally disagree with their choices - and especially when I know that they are doing their best and that their best simply isn't good enough (and there's not a thing I can do about it)...:confused3

:confused3 :confused3 Stupid here....what is that?

I've been ROBBED!

I HAD the 1000th on my screen!

Wooops....!

That's me.... IMPERFECT Mr. Innocent on a soap box again.... ::yes::

Seriously Dan... all we can do is try. And I think that either way .... leading from the front or counseling and watching from the back... each method has its' merits ... and probably one or the other should be exercised depending upon the actualy circumstances.

One thing I do agree with is - we should be critical - but forgiving to some extent. Lisa... I would be very close to your POV though. It's not as if we stood up to yell protests against the ill performing girl now ( we didn't ... did we?) .... but we can muse the various positions and perspectives quietly ... right? :faint:

Congrats Stacey!! :dance3:

And here is the link to the Disney Insider (email newsletter) to submit a story. I really think you should send this in. :lmao:

We didn't see any turtles come ashore to lay eggs (the moon was hidden by clouds). We're both having a hard time getting back in to work mode, especially with the TOAL so close :lmao:

pirate:

:coffee: ..yes, crash..i know exactly..how your lil'green man feels.

...:yay: ....it's always..exciting...to read...everyone's family news.

..i'm a big fan of the arts! [ i printed..off bcukifan's quotes..from wanting
to meet...ducky!...by the way...i thought..his lil' cartoon..was darling.

::yes:: ].......something, i feel strogly....toward..as

..very, very important..."the arts..illustrate different ways of thinking ..that
i believe, will lead..to mankind's greatest...discovervies."

all the ..."dancing/recitals" ..,:cool2: . those pics..are just..too cute!

i'm so impress with the grace..these ll'girls are able to accomplish. :flower3:

..& i've always..been a supporter ..of girls/women 's sports. [ for good
health.] :cheer2:

..the only draw back..are the adults' lacking..insights & self control.
...i'm sorry, ms. graves...that is simply wrong..on too many levels.
the biggest concern..is the message..being convey..to all the lil'girls.

wow!, regardless...it's pretty self evident..she sure was shining!
where did she get..those..long & beautiful hands?...& is that her
daddy's smile?

..that''what" daddys for, :thumbsup2 ...what a sweet story, mr. mike.

if i may. i would let her know how you was worry about her...& how
proud...you was. but as far..as i am concern..you deserved..a blue
ribbon..for dads!

..well stephie girl...5 boys..ain't that..bad..wait until you have seven
under one roof. ..however, ..i think....more daddys are very
careful..what their daughters...are permitted to wear. fyi, i also kept
a close..:magnify: ..on our boys.

then..there's justm, :goodvibes ! did everyone see her sea lion pic.!

..just~m, she is! cutest..thing! [ well next to crash's pj's pic. :rolleyes1 }

...i'm not surprise....a "hm"..creep..into..your house! but what this
madonna..reference...:confused3 ? ( per my prefernce..she looks way
to rough..for me. )..i don'tcare...there's something..about soft as
a baby bottoms~ by :tilt: pirate: ......so did you get..me something
soft & cuddley..& good to eat, hint by, :mickeybar

....the benefits..of the arts?..have anyone..seen ?..when mickey's dream?

..interesting* , when we met ducky after his show....i couldn't help
noticed..one of his drawing..was exactly....that! ..wonder if a disney 's
producer...got the idea? :earsboy:

....i'll spiel you a lil'secret....steph5, every night...i check on our lil princess:
....safe & sound. :love2:

..i can understand..boys doing atypical....stuff. i never followed the
standard...even as a husband [ boy, did my buddies..give me heat over
helping my wife..collecting barbies' & stuff...teddy bears....] but by
the time..i was in high school...doing the "unpopular"...was havin
the opposite effect. and this may seem way off the track...but the
"guys"..were very , very protective. { i grew up & went to a very "tough"
...high school.} underneath....these tough, &" jocks"...were very
sensitive...& "appreciated"..someone...that wasn't afraid...to recognized
..common sense/ their feelings. how much?..a cheerleader...made the
mistake...of treating me..mean. well in our high school..the student body
voted for cheerleaders...she was removed. * even though..i objected
to this...as her actions..had no meanings for me.

so..what i feel about boys taking dance lessons?...won't matter what his
peers say or do...as long as he know..his mommy  him. and who
will be laughing....when it leads...to big and better things. :wizard:

hey..that reminds..me, ..everyone..has some really  ..fish extenders.
..the problem..we have..is delta..and room!..eeks all around!

here's my baby...participating.....

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i75/mrmerlin56/p6.gif?t=1214285772

....ps, he was..kicked out of the nursey...noticed how quickly..he used
utensils?..then "imagine..our food bill?' no pixiedust: ..for us!

SOoooo.....

Just for chuckles... how about another FRIENDLY round of.....

i0EDEE987-E6C9-4641-85BF-D8A0BDB2D818.jpg

1.)... What is the FIRST "HAPPY THOUGHT" that comes to mind now? Or recently....???

2.)... What comes to mind as something you wish could be CHANGED about your cabin - and you are free to use your imagination any way you wish in replying to this or any of the questions BELOW. Silly or serious... no sweat.

3.)... What would you like INTRODUCED (added or changed) to our dinner dining if possible?

4.)... What would you like INTRODUCED (added or changed) to the POOL AREA(s) .... or alternatively.... any public area or place on the ship?

5.)... Do you DANCE a "real" dance ... or do you sort of hop around and randomly swing your arms madly about?

6.)... If you wish .... please ask a quesion for the next person posting to reply to. Only ONE question please... and try to maintain a cordial and diplomaticly respectful tone with this question.

7.)... answer the LAST question posed by a past respondant to this edition of "7 questions".... and if you wish... feel free to reply to ANY or ALL of the questions posed by other neighbors on part #6. And I'm repeating these last two from the other "7 question" round simply because it seems to have been a FUN and popular aspect of the last round of "7 questions"!

So... may I bid one and all good cheer as I slip a away to double check and tuck my kids in fer the nite ... and MAYBE turn in myself for the nite.
