Thanks for the info, AndrewDerekUK! I will hope for PLAPLAP!

What night do you think would be best for Palo? We enjoyed brunch last time, but think we might try High Tea this time. Has anyone tried that?

This may have already been discussed, but does anyone have any excursions they would recommend or are considering themselves?

On the 4-night Wonder we really enjoyed the Segway Off Road Back to Nature tour in Nassau and the Walking & Kayak Nature Adventure at Castaway Cay. We are thinking about something along those lines for this upcoming trip- maybe even some scuba! :yay:

I'd also be interested in some tips from you super experienced cruisers- about anything! :flower3:

Nicola- I am a huge Audrey Hepburn fan too! :thumbsup2

Thanks for all the information about the dining rotations! I will put it all on our hot topics page.

I am off to dance. I hope to get some pictures of Emily in her new shoes!

Later!

Here are the examples from the Dis FAQs:

7 day Eastern Cruises [per 1/3/09]
LAPLAPL 5:30 and 8:00
APLAPLA 5:45 and 8:15
PLAPLAP 6:00 and 8:30

Here is what the 2008 Passporter indicates (the 2009 version comes out soon):
All adults: LAP
Young kids: APL
Older kids: PLA

However on our last cruise (4 night), the two of us had the rotation predicted for 'older kids'. I guess I don't look my age, but they hadn't seen me yet. ;) We ate at Palo on the first night so I was very happy with the rotation we had. For an added bonus our table mates were awesome! (From the UK)

I think it would be nice to be at Lumiere's on formal/Golden Mickey night and at Parrot Cay on pirate night, but I think they will all be great no matter how they line up.

I am traveling with my 12 year old DD. Do we fall into the PLAPLAP?

Since you are soon going to be known as "The Questions Lady" :goodvibes, you are going to love the Hot Topic section of the website! I have already updated all of the dining rotation information! I am about to section it off to add Palo as our new hot topic! Watch for the new upload later tonight!

That is so great for the kids - I like when they encourage all of them.:teacher:

I also agree that the parents do not do the kids projects. I also try and stay away from correcting the kids homework as how do the teachers know if they understood the lesson. If they ask for help that is one thing but I do not correct. :yay: Too many of the young kids I hire out of college do not know how to research or complete a project without help.

Case in point why you should let your kids do the project themselves....... A girl did this project with peroxide, etc.....and it exploded all over. She had no idea what was in the project it had the potential to be very dangerous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Goodness! That is horrible!

We do a lot of projects at my school and I can always tell when I am awarding mom or dad a grade versus giving a grade to a child who did the work on their own. There are also many projects where we encourage them to be a "team project". These are a lot of our fun holiday type projects. I would love to see more parents back off and let me truly assess their child - they would probably find that they would do just fine if left to try it on their own.

I am only hoping that my upload does not take as long as the DIS upload took!:lmao:

Hot Topic - Wow! I loved all the discussion on the dining rotations - it was a great first hot topic. Since the hot topic was so successful...I have a new one...Palo! Post away and I will add it to our page!

New member page - andeeNjoel have sent pictures and information. Feel free to see their picture...at Palo...and view the pictures of their cute dogs!

Just for Fun - Did you know I am posting new trivia questions every once and a while? Well, new ones are there! I imagine a lot of you know some of these questions but feel free to take some guesses!

Jen's Blog - I have a new one up tonight! Another special shout out to Laura who comments all the time! I love reading what you write Laura! It is so much fun to check out what you add each night!

Well, that's all folks! I just checked and we should have the upload completed in about 10 minutes!

Night Everyone!

If you want PLA you should let your TA know to request it,
You may not get it, but it doesn't hurt to request it early,

I had my TA put that request in last year.

My dd will be 12 on this cruise too.

Since Beth and I are older than most parents in our kids class, we were rasied by our parents to do our own work. Caitin also is doing her own work, She asks for help and we will give examples and help her understand but its her work.

The teachers are also good about setting up extra help sessions in the morning before school starts, and Caitlin has gone in early when she feels she needs it.

The last two reporting periods she have gotten staight A's, so far so good.

PLA looks the best as you get formal night in Lumière's. Assuming Tortola is pirate night then you get Parrot Cay there that night,

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 WOW !! THIS is a wonderful suggestion !!
I'd like to dine at Lumiere's on the formal night - at PC on Pirate night !!

I'll wait though to see what "rotation" our table mates would choose ...:grouphug:

Do you know at what time is NOW  the late dinner ?

THANK YOU , laura :goodvibes

Re Palo dinner, try for Thursday first thats the last sea day,
Reasons, Lobster night Palo will have it as special, you have done the dinner rotations in the main restaurants, its before last night tip night, but also if you have kids they have settled in and can eat with the servers only whilst you are at Palo.

Try to avoid First night or last night, Pirate night-Tortola will clash with Pirates either the deck party, where there is a buffet, or the fun in the restaurant.

Afternoon tea has gone downhill fast and only book after everything else, offered on the three sea days.

As posted before on the normal rotations they are ''random' now not by age group, so put in a request, PLA looks best.

Excursions well we haven't seen DCL go to Tortola before but everyone recommends the baths first, the dolphins there has been done form St Thomas before and has good reviews, so save a boat trip and do it there.

St Thomas, you can do your own thing, paradise point, the butterfly farm shopping or Meagan's bay are all accessible by yourself, you do not need DCL.

St Thomas is famous for its duty free shopping arm your self with a credit card with a high limit, the ladies will love to shop for jewelry there, all compact easy to get to anything.

For nature lovers go for St John, a small boat trip and a wonderful natural island against the commercial St Thomas.

Castaway cay, if you havent done it before book the Singray trip as early as possible in the day, bike rides are nice but you do not need to book online theres plenty there.

The Dis 'sticky' thread with all tips and FAQ at the top of the main forum shows all dinner times, late dinner is 8pm/8.15pm /8.30pm

Andee & Joel feel free to ask me any questions, I know the odd thing, two or three about DCL,

This cruise thread can get 'exculisive use' of my knowldge with the Baltic thread!!!:cool1:;)

Want to know about 2011 West coast cruises????????

RE THE HOT TOPIC

PALO

Tipping: Yes you should tip, now when I post this on the main forum, a few people posts ''its included'' show the DCL website etc.

This is one that gets extremes, there as said are a few people who say its included and I presume they do not tip. The is slightly more who tip a very high amount, their view is what would the percentage tip be for an equal value meal at home. So they tip according to that.

The vast majority are in between and do tip extra but not too much.

A rule of thumb was not more than the Palo cost, so Brunch $15 cost pp, do not tip more than $15pp Dinner is the same. For a couple I think between $10 and $30 dependent on service.

Afternoon tea is $5 cost pp so do not tip more than that.

Remember if you drink booze the server automatically gets 15% of that, except the Brunch fist drink of champagne.

Tipping is personal so its up to you, whatever you do is correct, but do not listen to the 1 or 2 who post as loud as they can do not tip.

Ask why do Palo give you a bill at the end with a place for an additional tip?

Brunch bar far is the best meal and doesn't effect any other meal, its offered on sea days only and goes very fast. I would say book that first.

Brunch isn't the same as any other meal on ship, its a mixture of buffet, cooked meal and also cheese, desserts etc.

Rules of booking, if you see availability any time book it. Its a bit bad however if it clashes with the character breakfast, but enjoy the CB and have something light.

Afternoon tea has gone downhill and its really worth it anymore, the tea and cakes is nice but the rolls are worse than goofys galley. Don't bother.

Dinner is great try for the same time as your dinner rotation, so you go to the same show, If you have kids from 10 up, look dinner later in the week by then they know your dinner servers and they can still go to dinner whilst you are at Palo, rule always tell your servers if you are going to Palo, and also if your kids will still come to dinner, otherwise your table will be reallocated to others.

Avoid tip night at Palo you want to say goodbye to your servers and not miss the goodbye show.

You book Palo at your booking window of 105 days for Cats1>3 (inc Reas) 90 days castaway club and 75 days others, if paid in full. Book at 00.00 do not log in before 00.00 otherwise it will reject and say not paid in full, or other people accessing your ressies, and using more than one PC to book on Wiifi, is a no no.

So what if you do not stay up to midnight or are unlucky, well do not panic......

Get to the port early on embarkation day and you will get your ressies if you have a low boarding number, just go to the place they are booking Palo ressies as advertised in the embarkation navigator, often Rockin bar D.

And is a cruise without Palo an issue, NO, its not the be all and end all, the food is 24 hours always there, the dessert buffet in Lumière's is far better than afternoon tea, Dinner at Palo replaces a good meal in your rotation, only Brunch is a unique meal.

But you Will still have a great time without Palo, many people like family time and not to miss the kids at meal times.

Double dip, for thoose who do not wish to miss a thing, at dinner, if you have main dinner, book Palo at 8pm, have al ight snack at 6pm, with kids, put them in the club thne eat at Palo. I prefer my version above, have dinner later in the week same time as kids in the dinner.

Window seat, want a view ask for a window seat, but it gets hot.

Dress, cruise casual on Brunch and afternoon tea, only dress up for Dinner.

Private room, Palo has a private room that can be booked for Brunch or dinner that seats 14 people, you must have 14 people cost is the same.

You can only ever book one of each, one brunch, one tea, one dinner, that includes the private room, if you get that, they cancel your other booking, ie private room for brunch, your brunch booking for yourself is canceled.

laura :goodvibes

And Yet more meanings :rotfl2:
A palo is the name traditionally given in the flamenco environment for the different musical forms that constitute the traditional musical heritage of flamenco. Each palo is characterized by a variety of musical features such as its rhythmic pattern, its mode, its characteristic motifs, or the type of stanza used for the lyrics, and comprises a series of traditional melodies or songs, generally called estilos (styles) in the flamenco jargon. The meaning of estilo here has nothing to do with the general meaning of "style" as a series of characteristics that define a musical period, a trend, a genre, or the particular manner of an artist: it refers to a particular composition or song which was created in the past, either anonymously or attributed to a particular singer, and was developed by generations of singers. Any newly composed, non-traditional songs or compositions following the general form of the palo are also usually called by the name that palo.

The word palo, in Spanish, has several meanings, the main one being "stick", "bar", "pole" or "rod", but in this case it has the sense of "suit of cards". Therefore, it has a metaphorical use meaning category or classification.
The concept of palo must not be understood as a rigorous musicological category. It is rather a popular, sometimes inconsistent way of classifying songs according to similar characteristics. For example, to determine that a song belongs to the palo called Bulerías, only the rhythm is taken into consideration, no matter its mode or stanza. Fandangos, on the other hand, include a variety of forms in 3/4 or 6/8, but later it developed "free" forms (that is, with no determined rhythm). Most palos include dozens of traditional songs, while others like the serrana include only one song. Another interesting example is that of the polo and the caña: they are almost identical and should in fact be classified as variations of the same song, but tradition has classified them as different palos.

From the disney web site

Palo takes its name from the poles that line the canals of Venice.

The décor and food of Palo are inspired by Italy, the birthplace of the ships of the Disney Cruise Line.

CORRECT ! PALO is (in this case) an Italian word.
Both Disney ships have been built near Venice by Fincantieri - if you look carefully on deck 9 there is a plaque mentioning it

ry%3D400

There is a mosaic in the Palo private dining room: where you can see this pole (the red and white one).

Another meaning of the word PALO in the same environment is the stick used by the gondolier to push his gondola.

Hi, all!

I'm sorry to say that our family has had to cancel our booking for this cruise. I am going back to work in the school system and since teachers go back 2 weeks before school starts, that will be right when this cruise falls.

We are booking the June 6th 7 night instead, but are sad that we'll miss out on Tortola. I hope you all have a great time!

Later,
Rose :)
