Day 3 - Aruba (part 2)

After lunch we had booked a bus tour shore excursion.

We left the ship to meet on the pier with our tour guide. We were shown to our air conditioned bus and set off on our tour.

Aruba, taken from the ship.

Aruba is a Dutch island, so here is a nice Dutch windmill :teeth:

The landscape in Aruba is quite desert like. There were tons and tons of cacti everywhere you looked. There's also quite a lot of contrast in the vegetation and landscape. You get the cactus and the luscious looking green hills and the very rocky areas. Quite an interesting island.

On our tour we passed by a local cemetery. There they quite often bury their dead above ground in tombs that look like little houses. They will bury a person in the family tomb. When another family member passes away after a certain number of years they will remove the first coffin and condense the bones into a smaller coffin and shove it to the back of the tomb and then add another coffin to the tomb. Our guide called it the original timeshare :rotfl2:

Also their tombs are colourfully painted. Every couple of years they paint their homes in Aruba. When they have painted their house they will go to the cemetery and paint their family plot to match the colour of their house.

After our tour we returned to the ship where we had a bit of a rest until it was time to dress for dinner.

After dinner we went to evening show which was a comedian, whom I remember to be quite funny. That night they also had the ice skating show. It was interesting but we weren't that impressed by it for some reason.

After that hanging out at the Duck and Dog for a bit and then off to bed.

Tomorrow........ Curacao.

Just a little side note about the dining room servers.

We found our servers to be just so so. They didn't have a lot of personality and didn't seem really eager to please.

The second night I asked to see the children's menu. I was told they only had one in Spanish and that I wouldn't want anything off of it anyways :confused3 Well, I think that I should be the one who decides whether I wanted anything from that menu, not the server. I did ask for and receive the chicken noodle soup from the children's menu. My waiter tried to persuade me not to order it but I did and it was delicious.

The next night he again said they only had the childrens menu in Spanish. He did eventually bring me the menu.... in Spanish. He sent someone over to translate it for me. Unfortunately, his Spanish was no better than mine.

I asked the server why there was no menu in English :confused3 Are there no English speaking children on this ship :confused3 What do they do for them, give them the Spanish menu :confused3 Extremely strange.

The next night he finally managed to find me a menu in English :sad2: Given that the ships have their own printing capabilities, I found it strange that no English menu was available for the first 4 nights of a 7 night cruise.

Our assistant waiter also was sporadic. Some nights we would get lots of beverages and other nights some people would get offered them and others not. :sad2:

Dining room experience was not the most pleasant on this ship. I felt by the end of the cruise that our waiter was doing his best to annoy me

Definitely NOT a Disney Cruise Line experience.

I'm loving your trip reports Robin, your stateroom looks lovely and so does Aruba. Did you meet up with your friends a lot on the cruise ? Your photos are great, the ship looks really nice too and I can't wait to read some more :thumbsup2

I'm glad that you are enjoying my report Mandy.

We met up with our friends basically whenever our paths crossed onboard the ship. Usually in the buffet at breakfast/lunch or maybe on deck near the pools. One day we spent in port with some of them (that day to come yet in the trip report).

We had dinner together at night. On the second night we started to meet before the evening entertainment and then we'd spend some time together afterwards sitting at the pub people watching. We would just come and go from there as the mood struck us.

Trip report Day 2 update.

There was something that we found out on day 2 that I forgot to mention.

There was one couple of our group (who I didn't really know and had only met once) that Rick and I didn't see the first day onboard at all. Not that strange since we went to the buffet for lunch and we were the only ones at the dining room for dinner.

We found out the next morning that this couple had been taken off the ship and were going to be sent home that day.

Apparently the man had been ill the day before we were to sail. He made the trip to Puerto Rico and boarded the ship but his wife called the medical center to get something for a headache. Why they didn't just ask one of the rest of us I'll never know :confused3

The medical center of course jumped on that and quarantined him to his cabin. They were put off the ship before it sailed and put up at a hotel in San Juan and then sent home the next day.

So our party of 11 had been reduced to a party of 9 for the rest of the cruise.

We felt bad for them because the cruise was the lady's birthday present.

Another thing......at the beginning of the cruise we were told there had been a certain amount of illness onboard the previous sailing and to make sure that we were careful about washing our hands.

We were not allowed to serve ourselves from the buffet for the first four days. That is a real pain and totally slows down the process of getting people thru the buffet line. I don't like to have someone give me 5 of one thing and 20 of another when I'd rather it was the otherway around

I'm quite particular about the placement of my food on my plate too (foods not touching each other or juices running into other foods). The servers didn't have the same respect for food that I do and just dumped it wherever :p

After about the fourth day, the servers in the buffet lines disappeared and we were able to do it for ourselves.

I totally understand why they do that (less germ passing) but it made getting food a bit more painful.

Woohoo !! My trees are up, here are some piccies of my main tree

Nice trees Mandy.

Yesterday I even got in the mood and put out some Christmas salt & pepper shakers on the kitchen counter and a few other small decorations around.

Might even decide to put up the tree this year ;)

Thanks Robin, you must put your tree up, it always make the house look so festive - I hate it when I put it away, as the place looks so empty (though this year I'll be happy to take it down as we go away ;) )

Hi All

Mandy, nice trees. Very Disney!!:santa: ::MickeyMo

Well a little news here, DH and I have decided to sell our house and most of the contents and go traveling around the US and Canada in our RV full time....hopefully by the spring!! :Pinkbounc

Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. We had a great visit with our DS (who just got in from being out to sea for 6 1/2 months) and our future DDil.

Have a great weekend. Chat more later :grouphug:

Day 4 - Curacao

This morning followed the normal path of our cruise mornings. I got up and had breakfast, this time staying away from Windjammers and grabbing some pastries and tea from the Cafe Promenade. Rick lounged in bed until late morning again.

After my breakfast I again was wandering the decks of the ship and exploring.

Here is a picture of Curacao from the ships deck.

ebe8e8de.jpg

I spent some time sitting on the forward deck. It is also the helipad. At night you can go on this deck and there is very little light there. You can really see how beautiful the stars are from this spot. It was absolutely amazing how many stars you could see from the middle of the ocean away from all the land lights.

ebe8e89b.jpg

I decided to sit for a while on deck 4. Such a nice peaceful place to sit and enjoy the weather. Did I mention that it was sweltering the whole time we were on the cruise. Very, very warm........ I just loved it. Here is a picture of the deck I was sitting on. 3600ish passengers onboard that ship and I had the deck totally to myself. Of course some of them had already gone ashore in Curacao.

After getting Rick up and having lunch we headed ashore for another bus tour. This time we went to visit some caves and to see a place that sells liquor. Here is a picture of some of the colourful buildings on Curacao.

This picture shows the massive size of the Adventure of The Seas.

After our tour we returned to our cabin and found a lovely pillow sculpture waiting for us. Everyday our cabin steward would make us a different sculpture while we were away for lunch.

ebe8e7bb.jpg

Evening took the same path as all other evenings, dinner and then show and then hanging out around the ship with a little shopping thrown into the mix for fun.

This was the night that everyone went to bed early and left me to fend for myself. That's okay. I had a good time and stayed up until 1am. :woohoo:

Day 5 - Sea Day

Morning of course was the same as the other mornings. I liked going to the Cafe Promenade and picking up a quick breakfast rather than fighting the crowds at the buffet, so I did that again.

I don't really remember what we did this day. I guess we mainly sat around the pool deck and enjoyed the weather, shopped onboard and ate :thumbsup2

Here is a picture of the day's pillow sculpture:

Dinner, evening show - a think a stage production tonight for a change.

Grand gala buffet at midnight this night. A few pictures that I took.

After the feast we were all off to bed to get rested up for the next day's fun.

Ahoy Shipmates pirate:

I hope you are all having a lovely weekend

Susan ~ It sounds like you're going to have quite an adventure in your RV, I would love to do something like that, just being free on the open highway. It isn't going to affect your cruise is it ? You're still coming with us ?? Yes ??

Robin ~ Your photos are amazing, Curacao looks beautiful with it's coloured houses. The ship looks lovely too, the food at the midnight buffet was great especially that face in the melon ~ it looked so real, and I look forward to reading some more :thumbsup2
