76/81/77 or I-95?

We're planning to leave this Friday at around 4pm (the worst time ) from eastern Philadelphia suburbs, and know we're going to hit the p.m. commute. Seems like we could be stuck for hours in Philly/Wilmington and then Baltimore/DC Friday evening traffic. Would we avoid it by going Turnpike to I-81 then I-77? We've never been this way before (always go 95), but it seems like it would be much easier, especially at this time of day. Does this route get backed up during the evening commute, too? Other recommendations?

81 to 77 is a great way to go. Especially through the mountains of Virginia. You'll get enough of 95 later in the trip.

I agree and the southern part of 95 is a better drive!

With the "leaning bridge of Wilmington" adding a lot more traffic to 95, that route will be significantly messed up.

I would definitely go 81 to 77 and avoid the hassle.

I live in Baltimore. Philly is, what, two hours up 95? Going south is easier than going north in the afternoons. 6ish is usually not a problem at the tunnels. That should put you around DC near seven-seven thirty to South DC. South of DC could get dicey around that time, but there are HOV lanes that make it more bearable and they are outgoing that time of day.

You just have to consider if the turnpike tolls are worth the extra mileage and avoiding what might not be a problem (except around Wilmington...always an issue)

Thanks, everyone! I think we'll try it--at least on the way down to avoid Friday rush hour. I will miss seeing the DC skyline, though!
