75 still the best route from the North?

We will be leaving this coming Saturday (10/1), from OH. We normally take 75 all the way down. However, I have heard that Atlanta is really busy now, due to hurricane victims being sent there. I am wondering, should we take an alternate route around Atlanta?

Any advice?

It all depends what time you will hit the Atlanta area. It is faster to stay on I-75 then to take the by-pass, but in heavy traffic both are bad choices. Atlanta traffic is very, very congested and I doubt its from the hurricane victims. Its always a mess. I would stay away from the whole area from 7-9 am and from 4-7 pm during the week.

It's been listed here before, but there is a site called georgianavigator.com that you can check before heading in to Atlanta. It can show you up to date road construction and traffic reports. Also, when going through Atlanta AM750 has very frequent traffic reports and can tell you which highways are blocked. They are also good about using real names instead of the local nicknames for most roads.

Unfortunately, most of the back roads around Atlanta are getting full too, so you may as well take a deep breath and drive through. But, check before choosing to go through or around. It could save a huge amount of time if construction is as bad as they say it has been.

I grew up in GA, and Atlanta traffic was heavy before I moved 7 years ago.

If you have more than one person in the car, I would have to recommend taking I-75 straight through using the HOV lane. The Perimeter / I-285 can be as busy as I-75, I-85, or I-20 at times, especially with truck traffic passing through the area. Unless things changed, the I-75 HOV lane is HOV 24/7 and tends to move faster than the other traffic.
