You’ve seen stories about it everywhere because certain websites need to pay their bills and outrage is currency. I haven’t.

Stories about it have been on every major news outlet, no matter their bias. BL put in on twitter to blast out to the world. They thought they were still living in the "any publicity is good publicity" era. They wanted it to blow up. They would get a lot of attention, a few complainers, and it would be over. Well, not so much.

My mistake in using the dated word of alternative, in this discussion. I was making no attempt to be offensive to anyone in this discussion, my mistake and I will use more up to date verbiage going forward. I honestly had no idea that term had fallen out of favor, so now I know.
It doesn’t matter what verbiage you use; some will find some way to be offended.

First - the LGBTQ+ community isn't alternative.

Second - I don't drink very much (and I especially don't drink Bud Light for reasons of taste) but I have a Bud Light tshirt that I won at a trivia contest back in like 2007 in Chicago. At a gay sports bar. Companies like Budweiser, etc have been advertising in magazines like Out/Advocate for decades now - not at the expense of the alternative straight community but as a way to shore up financials by appealing to different markets. It's surreal to see the safe space some people need right now ...

Right, that's the thing I don't understand. None of this takes anything away from anybody - it only branches out to even more people. How can anyone blame a company for that?

Blame them for actually declaring that a man was a woman? Yeah, I blame them for that. That is very different from the previous campaigns. He didn't celebrate "365 days of being a woman." He can no more be a woman than a white person turn themselves into a black or asian person. And they definitely shouldn't be on the court or field competing with real women, but the propagandists are working hard on that one too. BL customer drew a line. Expect many more to follow. Many have had enough of the "tolerance" than means anybody gets to have anything however they want it and everyone else must agree unconditionally. That's not how the real world works.

And why did it get a lot of attention? It’s not a Super Bowl ad, not even a television ad, it’s specifically meant for Mulvaney’s instagram followers and certain people decided to lose their minds over it. You could have ignored it like a whole bunch of other people did. There’s always going to be another thing to be outraged about that has nothing to do with you and you can choose how to respond to it. The other option might be better for your health.

What are they though, if they can't be outraged?

Seems some people have made it their personality to look for things to be outraged about.

Fun times.

In the end I'm not so sure that the "right" or "outrage" have anything to do with why Elemental failed. One site listed ten reasons..... and they didn't even touch on the fact their was a minor non-binary character.

It just wasn't a great film.... Disney tried doing a Cannes closing debut for Elemental, and movie goers there just didn't like it. Now regular movie critics did give it a passing grade... but I expect it was lackluster enough that most will wait a few months to see it on Disney+. Leaving them free to go watch something better at a very crowded summer movie season. I'm sure Spider-Verse was what most kids were interested in seeing...

Sorta like people getting outraged about the word alternative being used in this thread. Why is it only acceptable when one side of the culture war gets upset about something?

I mean "You could have ignored it like a whole bunch of other people did. There’s always going to be another thing to be outraged about that has nothing to do with you and you can choose how to respond to it. The other option might be better for your health." is a phrase you clearly agreed with and liked above, correct?

This I can certainly agree with. I just don't think a West Side Story type of film set in a 1960s New York type of city is something most people see as riveting today. The characters are not incredible with a ton of marketability. It just wasn't a great story that the masses saw as a must-see movie. I hope Disney Pixar makes the appropriate adjustments going forward and starts producing winning films again. This movie will likely lose $100+ million dollars for Disney. No one here reading random post about Disney, wants Disney to fail......I don't think.

The fact that you think you are on "one side of the culture war" is all we need to say further on this....

Well, I don't know that anyone was actually outraged by that. I mean, they're not taking you to task globally over it. I wouldn't recommend that they do. Certainly there are things that the left gets outraged about that are silly though, and personally I think are ill-advised. Pick your battles. That's why I don't understand the Bud Light thing - it's so minor. Who even cares? It doesn't affect anybody at all if this person uses some different pronouns and dresses differently. Certainly, there is a legitimate debate to be had regarding sports and things that actually do affect the experience of others. It's unfortunate that we can't even have that discussion though without the cycle of outrage!

I don't think anyone is arguing that. Though I've already seen, while looking at articles because of what the other poster put up, articles taking joy in Elemental not doing well because it has a non-binary character in it. I think the bigger reason is Disney has conditioned their audience to wait for Pixar releases to come on Disney+ now since you only have to wait about a month or so to see them. But yes, Spiderman versus Pixar is an easier sell now to most kids, especially an animated version that's pretty great storytelling.

The problem is, as was brought up, is that people truly believe they are in the middle of a war. They think if they give an inch they will lose. It's this win/loss attitude that's kind of infected our public discourse on an array of things.

I agree with you on this Brian. Just pointing out it is very clear that being upset with something done or said is seen as acceptable if you agree with the outrage and deemed unacceptable if people don't agree with it. Both sides get upset over stupid little things that the other side sees as completely normal.

I don't care one way about the Bud Light mess. I don't or have ever really drank Bud Light really. If I drink a beer it is normally a local craft beer made by some really cool entrepreneurs in my area. However, it was clear to see from miles away that Bud Light was stepping in it on this mess. Bottom line is they failed in the #1 rule in Marketing of "Know your customer".

I think the ability to cancel something through social media has now become very intoxicating for some on the right. It used to be the same and probably still is for some on the left who looked to cancel people for any fault or past transgression. Now it seems to be a quest to cancel any company that dares to tread on the side of transgender acceptance or takes part in pride month.

100% agree with you on this. I had no idea I was even saying anything offensive above, and it was made clearly known I had with the verbiage I used earlier in this thread. I don't want to purposely offend anyone and will change my speech patterns accordingly, but it certainly feels like I was put "in the middle of a war".

With all due respect, you've misinterpreted the feedback you received.

People were working to educate you. Point out flaws. No one was blasting you or asking mods to remove you from this board.

I think you should re read from that perspective.

Crazy thing is, the left tried to "cancel" people and the right decried it. Now the right tries to cancel people too in the name of not being cancelled. It's all so stupid and doesn't even really work. Most people who got "cancelled" only had their voice amplified!

Well, I think it probably feels that way when several people all point it out at once, but, you know, that's a message board for you. I can respect that you accept the idea and will change accordingly in the future, even if I also think that small, semantical issues are not worth the trouble.
