This was MY very first trip to Disney, at almost 30 years old it was about time ;) my husband had been on a family trip when he was a preteen and it was our older two children's first trip at ages 7 and 9 (we left our 2 and 4 year old at home for this trip).

I planned and planned but still felt underprepared but away we went!
The flight itself was fine, we took off just a few minutes late and still arrived on time, slight turbulence but nothing too terrible. We flew Southwest and I was pleased with how nice their service was compared to a previous trip we took with US Airways. No baggage fees and snacks on board being big ones for me, not to mention we paid less for the tickets and got a direct flight.
So we arrive at MCO and I'm going to admit right here I am NOT good with maps. We ended up on the wrong side of the airport on level 1...so back up to level 3 to the correct side of the airport and back down to level one and the walk all the way down the length of the building to get to Magical Express. Needless to say I was not a fan of the Orlando airport from the start, it's marked but not in any way that sticks out to someone who has never been there before. I was fully expecting with how big Disney is for the area to have some obvious signage leading the way but there was no such signs.
We waited in the Magical Express line for about 15 minutes before we could board a bus and then waited some additional time on the bus. I am assuming to load everyone up and give some extra time for anyone else to come. Our flight arrived a little after 1pm and we didn't get to our resort until 3pm or so. Definitely wasn't quick but it was stress-free as far as no baggage claim to worry about.
The ME bus to Port Orleans first stops at one or two other resorts...I already forget but once we got to our resort we went in to check in. Pretty simple process since I did the online check-in prior to arriving. We ended up in building 26 in Alligator Bayou at Port Orleans Riverside. I requested a room with the pull down bed because while we were only traveling with two kids I have stayed in hotels with them before and when they are in the same bed there are fights over covers and pillows and kicking and it's just no fun ;) I also requested top floor and corner room, both of which we got. The extra light from the second window in the corner room was nice and the curtains blocked the light well when we didn't want it ;) Building 26 isn't the most convenient as far as bus stops/the lobby go but it definitely isn't the least convenient either. Something that ended up being pretty nice was that we were pretty much equal distances from the South and West Depots. South is the main depot by the lobby and we used that most mornings but when we were heading back to our room and on a packed bus and the driver decided to stop at the west depot first we could get off there and walk back to our room without the extra time on the bus.
That first night we went to Downtown Disney to look around, SO much to see and at night with the sparkling trees it really is quite magical :) It was pretty cold for Florida the day we flew in but it was better than Wisconsin weather. We ate at Planet Hollywood, no reservations needed and were seated immediately. The food was good, and we had a coupon so that was nice too ;) We went back to our room and our bags were 'magically' there, got organized and ready for the next day and called it a night. I found the rooms to be quiet and I am usually a light sleeper however my husband did say one night he heard our neighbors coming in at 2am being quite loud and he said he could hear almost every word they were saying....so maybe I was just extra exhausted.
Saturday February 1...thank goodness the weather was more like we pictured! We went to Epcot on our first day in the parks. My first goal was to look for breakfast so I asked a CM where Sunshine Seasons was and they pointed me to the Land building. This is where me being a first timer shows ;) we got there and the line for Soarin was short so we rode that right away then went and ate a Cinnamon Roll each. Soarin was a hit for our whole family. Living with the Land...not so much. It was interesting, but indeed boring. We didn't bother with the other ride in the building. Then we tried to finish up that side of Future World. Our video game loving 9 year old loved Innoventions, we discovered the Disney card character meet wasn't until afternoon with was a disappointment since I knew we'd be busy with the Showcase by then. Captain EO left me pretty unimpressed overall. Spaceship Earth was a neat ride. We started the showcase with Mexico and their counter service restaurant...yummy! It was however extremely busy, hard to find a spot to sit and eat. The mariachi band was wonderful and the ride inside the Mexico building was cute. We really enjoyed looking around all the countries in the World Showcase, even those without rides and the kids seemed to enjoy it to an extent also (I think making passport books ahead of time helped!). Maelstrom in Norway ended up being one of our Epcot favorites. We were all disappointed in the wait for Anna and Elsa. 3 hours the first time I checked...the least amount of time ended up being an hour and a half but alas we had dinner reservations...pretty disappointing for my Frozen loving little girls though. We made it to Japan that first afternoon, the singers in American Adventure were wonderful and the pick a pearl in Japan was something my girls really enjoyed. Our dinner for the night was at Akershus. We arrived 15 minutes early for our reservation but didn't end up even being allowed into the restaurant until 15 minutes after our reservation which was odd to us. Picture with Belle and we were seated. The food was okay, I enjoyed mine, my husband and kids not so much. The kids ordered pizza and I did try it...it tasted like they used the sauce from spagettios so I can't say I blame them too much. It was nice to get so many princess autographs and pictures in one sitting though! IllumiNations was WONDERFUL, I highly recommend it.
Sunday, February 2- after a late night in Epcot it was ROUGH waking up early for our 8:20am reservation at Cinderella's Table but we managed. Unfortunately one of the biggest reasons I made that reservation was for the must have pictures of empty Main Street and in front of the castle, wouldn't you know it was SO foggy you could barely see the outline of the castle standing right in front of it. Major bummer for me. Children do not get a choice for food, they get a basic meal which I can't even remember what but it isn't too much and my kids didn't care for it. I ordered the filet and eggs which was okay...can't remember what my husband got. Overall, I was disappointed in the experience. The princesses were mostly the same as the ones we saw the night before, the food was pretty lacking and the special 'wishing star' ceremony was just a recorded message. I don't even think half the tables around us even heard it over the dining room noise. For two table service credits I cannot say I recommend this one. For one it would be a must simply due to the location but for two credits...eh, not worth it for us. We did Frontierland and Adventureland, and then lunch at Pecos but had to go back to the hotel because my husband forgot his wallet and we had dinner reservations at the California Grill which we decided rather than using two table service credits we would just pay using our Disney rewards. It took an hour and a half to quick run back to our room ;) this was the first, but not last, time we were extremely frustrated with Disney transportation. Big Thunder Mountain was our favorite of the day and we got an extra long Jungle Cruise due to some technical difficulties. We headed to the Contemporary and were seated for dinner fairly quickly. The sake martini was excellent by the way ;) We actually had a really great seat for the fireworks right from our table and enjoyed it. We didn't go all out for dinner, once again the kids wanted pizza...this time they loved it thank goodness! I had the chicken which was actually REALLY good. While talking about the California Grill, the Contemporary definitely had the best selection in charms for charm bracelets than any other store anywhere on Disney property we went. I had told my girls to wait because we were so early in the trip and I was sure we'd see more somewhere else. There were extra magic hours at Magic Kingdom that night but we went back to our resort after dinner...which was probably a good thing because I waited at the bus stop a full 40 minutes before we even got on a bus. Lesson of the evening, if the driver will at all let you on, GO. We waited 20 minutes for the first bus which was packed full, the driver stopped us at our family and then 2 young ladies from behind us asked if there was room for 2 more...I said if there is room for two more my husband needs to go with our daughter cause by this point she was in tears she had to go to the bathroom so bad, so my husband and daughter got on...and then the two young ladies pushed past me and my other daughter and got on :confused3 so we waited 20 more minutes for another bus. Needless to say we were beyond exhausted by the time we got back to our room and a little irritated that two young ladies who looked to be early 20s would feel the need to get back to their room before children who were waiting in line before them...(there was another family with young children behind us and ahead of them)
Monday February 3 was our second (and last) Epcot day. We did Soarin right away since we wanted to use a snack credit for breakfast again. Then we did the other side of Future World. LOVED Test Track. Mission: Space however...ugh. I do get motion sickness but not very easily, that is the ONLY ride we went on during our trip that I had any motion sickness on. Our 9 year old actually threw up after it. We did do the More Intense though, so, definitely disappointing for us. We then made the mistake of doing the Ellen's Energy experience...it's a moving experience...if you area already not feeling well from Mission:Space next door it is not a good combination. Finished off Future World with that side of Innoventions and then finished off the Showcase. We managed to finish everything we wanted by 3pm! It was a HOT day so we decided to head back to the resort for swimming before dinner. It ended up being a great idea, the kids loved it and they have so many activities at the main pool they were definitely never bored. I lounged and worked a little on touring plans for the next few days.
It was really hard to plan ahead having never been to Disney before BTW! Speaking of, FastPass+...great once you get the hang of it. On this day in particular I was extremely frustrated with it. When we got to Test Track the wait was only 25 minutes, so I decided to push our fast pass later. Not knowing how to do that I just canceled our FastPass+ reservations for the day, WRONG! Then you can't remake them so after Test Track I had to go sit in the FastPass+ line to figure it out. Which is funny since we didn't end up needing them that day anyways...live and learn. If you need to change a time/experience just change the time/experience...do not cancel them or the system thinks you are out of FastPasses for the day!
We headed back to Epcot that night for dinner at LeCellier. The pretzel bread is amazing, as was the tenderloin with mushroom sauce (and I'm not a big mushroom fan). I'm not sure it was worth 2 table credits...but definitely more so than Cinderella's Table. I was stuffed when we left and the 'candy bar' dessert they have was just about the most amazing thing ever too. We skipped IllumiNations that night which in hindsight I kind of regret but we had another early breakfast the next morning so off we went...

Tuesday February 4, Animal Kingdom day!
We got up early for our 8:20am Tusker House reservations the next morning and off we went! We arrived and were escorted right to the are to take our pictures and then our table. We were brought drinks pretty quickly (along with an orange juice kind of drink that was really awesome! I wish I had asked exactly what it was) and then off to fill our plates. All 4 of us loved the food, there was a very good selection and it by the end of the meal we were stuffed. It was fun seeing some of the characters we hadn't been seeing much of with princess loving little girls ;) (Donald, Daisy, Goofy, Micky; all in their safari gear). I was also pleasantly surprised that not only did Tusker house give a big family picture they took as you arrived but we got 6 snapshots (4x6) too, not sure if that is just a PhotoPass+/MemoryMaker deal or if everyone gets that. All in all, Tusker House is one breakfast we will be most likely to repeat for future trips. We headed straight for the Safari after breakfast and were pleasantly surprised with very little wait. It was definitely a neat experience, we even had a rhino run right in front of the vehicle we were in. We did the walking Tour and visited Rafiki's...it was a nice break from the rush of the other two parks we had been to. Then, we were off to Asia. Expedition Everest was fun, our 7 year old wasn't such a fan but the adults and 9 year old loved it. The rapids ride was also fun, you definitely get wet but it was pretty hot that day (80s) so it was kind of refreshing actually and we dried pretty quickly afterwards. Didn't quite make up for the fact that Splash Mountain in Magic Kingdom was down our whole trip for refurbishment though ;) We then went to DinoLand, got on Primeval Whirl...wasn't a favorite for my husband, 9 year old and I but oddly enough our 7 year old LOVED it. Ha! It's a rough, spinning ride so I was surprised. We wanted to try to do other things that night so we decided to hurry on to Dinosaur. After that we ate lunch at Pizzafari (want to guess who requested that ;) dh and I wanted Flame Tree BBQ but the kids won out), food was good though.
We left, changed and headed to Downtown Disney as I had heard about the Lego store activity. The first Tuesday of each month at 5pm at the Lego store they teach kids how to build a mini figurine and they can bring it home for free. So we rushed back to our resort since dh wanted to grab a few things first, got in the line for the boat and waited...and waited. We got in line at 4:15 or so...and waited. We knew it'd be a while because we were told a boat had just left when we arrived and sure enough, no boat for Downtown Disney until after 4:30. The boat situation was odd to me, they had two running. One solely between Riverside and French Quarter due to the pool at French Quarter being refurbished and one to Downtown Disney. The French Quarter one sat there from the time we arrived at the dock until after we left for DTD. Our DTD boat stopped at French Quarter both on the way to DTD and the way back to Riverside. The boat we took was to capacity with at least another full load of people left waiting for the next one at the dock. Why couldn't they run both boats to DTD since they stopped at FQ to and from DTD? It didn't seem like a popular service anyways whereas the boat to DTD was. We didn't arrive to DTD until after 5 when all was said and done so I worried we had missed it but we got to the store and they were still doing it, unfortunately my daughter's deemed the figuring too boyish and didn't want to do it anyways ;) Kids. We let them play at the Lego store and did some more browsing. We ate dinner at Earl of Sandwich and then went back to our room to get ready for the next day and hopefully get some sleep since I knew we had another busy day coming.
Wednesday February 5- last Magic Kingdom day! We started our day by showing up early to watch the welcome ceremony, I really do recommend this at least once a trip. It was a nice show and set the mood for the day. We went right for Tomorrowland and got on all the rides we wanted with pretty short waits before we went back to Main Street Bakery for breakfast. I was a little disappointed that they didn't have Cinnamon rolls but they did have some awesome muffins. Finished up Tomorroland and most of Fantasyland (sadly Barnstormers was closed...I had written this down but sadly didn't remember on our first MK day so I forgot to make it a priority that day and we didn't get to ride it like we had wanted). Lunch was a FP+ reservation at BeOurGuest, which was a really nice experience. We were escorted right to the front to order (I wished I had taken a look at the menu before we went in they got us in so fast!) and then you just go find a spot and they amazingly enough find you in one of the three huge dining rooms. Our girls wanted to sit in the rose room, which might be a little scary for young kids since it has loud cracks of thunder and is darker but they seemed to love it. All three dining rooms were beautiful. Could be a positive or a negative but the kids food was not very 'kid-like'. I got our spaghetti loving daughter some noodles with what was described as a marinara type sauce and some broccoli, she hated it. Our other daughter got the pork and mashed sweet potatoes...she also wasn't a fan. I got the ham sandwich and my husband got the turkey...both served with fries. See where this is a problem? Kid entrees served with sides that appeal more to an adult pallet and adult entrees served with sides enticing the kids. To top it off adults got to choose from the amazing cupcake selection...but kids got no dessert (on the dining plan)...um??? We shared our cupcakes with the kids which was kind of a bummer since they really were amazing. I should add that this was a problem for most of the trip, the only counter service that gave dessert to the kids was Pizzafari. Other than that adults got a dessert but not kids. For the most part it didn't bother us since we were fine sharing with the kids but it just didn't make sense to me. After lunch we did Big Thunder Mountain again and then went to our FastPass+ for Enchanted Tales with Belle (HIGHLY recommend a FastPass for this one if it is something you want to do). By this point in the day our 7 year old was CRANKY, she refused to participate in any way. She was even offered to go up and get a picture with Belle and bookmark after the play even though she did not participate and refused. Our older daughter loved it though and it was a cute experience. For any kids who aren't too shy and love Belle I recommend they roar as loud as they can to try to get the part of the Beast :)
We then took the train to Main Street and let the kids play the Sorcerers of Magic Kingdom game for a little bit (they had been asking since I told them about it our first day in Magic Kingdom), browsed Main Street a bit and then went to find a spot for Wishes. Amazingly enough we got a spot on a bench right in front of the castle. However it was a lot of waiting and I ended up caving and buying a light up toy to keep the kids from complaining about all the waiting. Let me say, California Grill was a nice experience but you just do not get the full Wishes experience from there, there is nothing like watching Wishes from the Magic Kingdom. To me, even more impressive than the fireworks was the castle projection show. It was just amazing and you completely miss that at the California Grill (and I imagine anywhere but Magic Kingdom). After the fireworks we immediately went to the buses and actually managed to get on a bus right away (I think that night was one of the ONLY times the whole trip we didn't have to wait 10+ minutes for the bus to arrive) We got a late dinner in the food court at our resort (which was so yummy and big portions! especially the build your own pasta) and then went back to the room.
Thursday February 6- Hollywood Studios
I should have known better, but I learned this day to always check the weather. I had looked the night before for rain, so I was prepared with our ponchos in the park bag for the next day but I missed the part where the high for the day would struggle to reach 70. After a few days in the 80s it felt COLD (I just have to laugh at this since we had come from below zero temps but we acclimate fast I guess ;) not helped by the fact that we were in shorts/t-shirts and sandals). Unfortunately I didn't realize this until we were already at the park so we toughed it out but it was kind of miserable, especially once it started raining. We got in Tower of Terror and RnRollercoaster right away. 7 year old hated them both. Had a cinnamon roll for breakfast at the Writer's Stop (good thing we like cinnamon rolls LOL ) The kids did love the Beauty and the Beast Show and the Little Mermaid. Toy Story Mania was fun too. Lunch was a reservation at Hollywood&Vine for our Sofia the First loving 7 year old. It was good, however I am not sure it's something we'd do again. It's tough because next time we go I am sure our younger kids will love the Disney Jr. characters but it took a LOT of time which was stressful since most of what is in Hollywood Studios are shows that start at certain times, we just barely made it to the one we wanted after lunch. When you are in the parks to stop for so long just to eat feels like a waste of time when counter service is so quick. It was however nice that we saved the time because we would have otherwise had to go see Sofia the First and we got some autographs/pictures with the other characters for our little ones back at home. After that we decided to head to the resort to change...and when we got back to the room we decided to just stay and skip the rest of Hollywood Studios. I started packing us up since we were leaving the next day and the kids got a chance to relax and watch some tv. At 5 we went down to the Campfire on the Bayou which was fun for the kids and then we went and had dinner at the food court again. Another early night for us but we were all plenty exhausted!
Friday February 7- Travel day
Our flight left MCO at 3:35 so we had to be to the stop for Magical Express by 12:30. I finished packing everything in the morning when everyone woke up/showered/got ready and then pressed the Luggage button on the phone in the room. Very quickly they sent someone to bring our bags to their baggage room! Literally less than 10 minutes from the time I called. We went and ate breakfast at Riverside Mill and then went to check our bags. It is so nice to be able to check your bags in right at the resort! We didn't see them again until we were in our home airport at baggage claim. I had planned all this time to go to Downtown Disney on our last day and get our souvenirs so we got on the bus to DTD at the resort. At this point we discovered they had a monitor in the A shelter at south depot with times when the next bus for where should be arriving...and I laughed, how nice would that have been all those days we waited forever for a bus ;) Once we arrived at DTD we discovered that no stores are open until 10am (except the candy store, that one was open at 9:30), my husband was still exhausted so we sent him back to the room and walked circles around the candy store until 10am. Got our souvenirs and by a little after 11am we got to the bus stop...only to watch the Riverside bus pulling away!!! (we had horrible luck the whole trip with the buses so at this point I wanted to cry) Knowing we still wanted to eat lunch before leaving I ran us to the dock to catch a boat which luckily one was just coming in. We were on the boat by 11:15 and while I knew it'd be close as far as time I figured we'd be fine. Got to French Quarter at 11:35...starting to panic a little but since we were the only 3 people on the boat, the driver knew we were going to Riverside and nobody was waiting to board I figured it'd be a quick stop. 11:40 rolls around and we are still waiting...11:45...11:48 and I stand up and the driver lets us off the boat and we walk/run to Riverside...and make it before the dang boat! Let me say at this point I was fuming mad about the transportation. Nobody was waiting or coming to board that boat and we waited over 10 minutes just sitting there. I looked out the window while we were eating and that empty boat pulled up to dock :-/ We did manage to quickly eat and get on the Magical Express. I thought we'd be waiting forever at the airport but really they have other stops and we weren't at the airport until close to 2pm. Got through security pretty easily and the flight went well...until the shock of getting off the plane in Wisconsin hit that is ;) boy is it cold here! I'm sure I missed a ton that I'll have to come back and add but wanted to get it all out before I forgot some things.

Okay, so a few must dos/don'ts for the future

Transportation-
I am torn, I loved not having to worry about renting a vehicle or driving in a city I've never been in before. Being from small town Wisconsin traffic in bigger cities causes me some anxiety. I am sure part of it is pure luck, about twice we had a very easy time getting right on a bus. Most of the time we had just missed the buses. The one thing Disney really could do is time the buses better. Most of the time they had two buses going to each park from our resort...but they came one right after the other. It would have been so much nicer if they could have somehow had one come every 10 minutes rather than two come every twenty. As I mentioned with the boats I am not quite sure why one boat was designated as a purely Riverside to French Quarter boat when that didn't seem to be a popular service and the DTD boat stopped at both anyways. Would have made more sense to have two DTD boats running and then anyone who wants to go between the resorts can get on the boat going in the direction they need. We did not travel at an extremely busy time of year so I can only imagine those who have are laughing at me for complaining about the transportation in early February ;)
I'm just not willing to lose that much time sitting around waiting for buses so as much as I enjoyed staying at Port Orleans Riverside for every other reason I do not think we will be returning. In fact I think in the future we will probably aim for a Magic Kingdom or Epcot area resort, preferably on the monorail. I had seen the complaints about transportation before our trip and figured it couldn't be too bad, but it really is the one part of our vacation that was less than satisfactory. Now this doesn't include the Magical Express, for us I really had no issues with it and the convenience was very nice.

Magic Bands-
Nothing but good experiences here. We did have to make sure our kids had them on each morning before we left our room but it was really quite nice to have everything (dining reservations, room key, fastpass+, credit card, ect) right there with the tap of our wrist. No separate room keys, park tickets, carrying around our credit card and paper reservations. It was really nice. This was my first Disney trip so I have no prior experience but I enjoyed the system. The one issue I had was I didn't realize the first day you enter a park it scans your finger print for all future visits, I didn't pay attention to how I was placing my finger and then had problems entering the parks until they reset my finger print and I got to redo it. A tip for anyone else with thin fingers, use your thumb. It really wasn't a big deal but I did feel badly holding up the line right at park opening because it didn't recognize my finger. It reads all adults fingerprints upon park entry but not kids. Also nice was the fact that you choose a pin on adult bands, made you feel safer in case you lost the band (which would be pretty hard to do but I'm sure it's happened) that someone couldn't just rack up charges on it.

My Disney Experience/FastPass+-
Once I got the hang of it, GREAT. Easy to see wait times and where characters were very quickly. Changing FastPass+ through the app was an issue because I tried canceling our FastPass+ in order to make new ones...can't do that on the app. You need to go into change experience/time and once I got the hang of that it was very easy to go in and change ours. Waits were really not bad at all, probably due to the time of year so this was nice to be able to try to change reservations if we went on something with little to no wait and wanted to use the FP+ for something else. FP+ itself was very nice though I did hear complaints from off-site guests or guests who hadn't made their FP+ selections prior to entering the park. For someone who stayed on-site and made FP+ selections in advance it was very nice. I did run into not being able to change FP+ to experiences we wanted once in the park, especially in Epcot, they ran out of FP+ for TestTrack fairly early in the day. I think that is probably pretty typical. My biggest thing was having never been to WDW before I didn't know *when* to make FP+ reservations. It's hard to say even now, you really do need a plan before entering the park but for the most part I think it's best to make FP+ for later in the day. Making a FP for anytime before 10-11am really seemed to be a waste. Hollywood Studios really was hard to preplan, I guess I didn't look into it enough. It's hard to plan because it seems most of the attractions have specific times they start and you can't get the times guide at the resort with the map so I wasn't aware of any of the times until we stepped foot in the park. I am sure there is some way to get them ahead of time so in the future if we do Hollywood Studios again I will have to figure that out.

Dining Plan-
We got the Basic Dining Plan, I have yet to really sit down and figure out how much everything we ate cost. Prior to going I figured it would be like prepaying for our food, but I'm not so sure. I guess I didn't factor in tipping, which gets expensive fast when you are ordering expensive food in order to 'make the most' of your dining plan. I'm not so sure I would buy it again but I am hoping maybe next time we can go during a Free Dining promotion. Before we went I really stressed about upgrading to the Deluxe Dining Plan and I am SO GLAD I did not! For us, as a family who wanted to make the most of our park time it just did not make sense. On days where we did not have any table service meals I promise we did not miss them. The counter service meals are plenty filling and QUICK, plus you don't have to tip on counter service meals. We did several 2 Table Service meals, California Grill (which we paid for rather than using the dining plan), Cinderella's Table, and Le Cellier. In hindsight, if you are on the dining plan 2 Table Service credit meals are NOT worth it. Not to say don't do them but they are not a good use of your dining plan. Honestly the only one I feel I would want to repeat in the future is Le Cellier, though my husband was not equally impressed so we shall see. A lot of people say they end up with tons of snack credits to use up at the end of their stay. We did not since we used a snack credit for breakfast most mornings...and we only had one snack in the parks! (Dole Whip) but we ended up each using 2 snack credits on our last day for snacks to bring to the airport/home. I think we really made good use of them by doing a muffin/cinnamon roll for breakfast most mornings. Adult CS/TS meals include a dessert so I never felt deprived of sweets ;)
