We leave next week and dd5 just came down with strep. She is just starting antibiotics and will be on them while at Disney. I am just hoping she recovers before we leave. Her med has to be refrigerated and we are staying at POP. We will have a cooler but really dont want her meds floating around in a cooler for a few days. Is is true that you can get a fridge for your room at no charge if there are medical reasons? Would be so much easier.

Oh no I'm so sorry! Strepp is a bad bug. Yes, you can call cro and let them know about the need for a fridge for her medication and it will be free. I would also call Pop before you arrive to be sure it will be in your room when you check in.

Do you have other children? I would ask for "just in case" meds for everyone in your household. My doc would do that for us but we've known him for 18 years and he is our Elder in our church! I'd hate to have one of the rest of you come down with strepp while there.

I hope your daughter recovers quickly.

Thank you. She is our only one. Took us 12 years to be able to have her so she is our one and only. I think I will call my doctor for me and dh and see if he would do something like that just in case. I dont think he would but you never know. She will be on her med for almost a week before we go so I am pretty sure she will be doing better by then.
She has been so healthy all winter. Has not caught anything and has not even been on an antibiotic since she was 2 (she is 5) Figures she would get a bug now :sad1:
Thank you for your good thoughts and I will call tomorrow about the fridge.

May be too late now, but you can ask the dr. to prescribe an antibiotic that comes in chewable tablet form (assuming your child doesn't swallow pills). We did that one year when DS came down with something just before leaving on vacation....think we ended up with Augmentin (but it was more expensive forumlated that way),

Strep can get better, much better, in as little 2 days on antibiotics. If you still have 7 days to go, I think you'll be fine.

Ask for a fridge for medical reasons, they will give it to you.

I hope she gets to feeling better soon. Have her take it easy until then. I am a carrier and strep can be very scary if the illness is not properly treated and if you do not get enough rest while sick with it. A relapse is much worse than strep itself.

However, I agree with the above poster about how fast one can get well on antibiotics.

Thanks, really didnt know what to expect. She never had it before. They are such little germ breeders at this age

I feel your pain...literally! I am attempting to get better from a nice case of walking pneumonia. Yeah, talk about fun! I hope your daughter gets better soon! :)

maybe your doc should give you and dh an RX just incase one of you contracts it too mid-vacation!!!!

Good luck.... She should feel better in just a few days after starting the antibiotics.

I agree with a previous poster to ask if you could have a prescription "just in case." I've done it before, and have never needed the drugs but it was nice to know that if I had become ill, I wouldn't have to find an urgent care somewhere.

Ya know the drill, plenty of rest, lots of fluids and antibiotics! Its better she showed symtoms now instead of on the way or at Disney!

Good Luck! Im sure she'll be fine soon. Have a great time!!

You DD should be fine. Antiboics works well on Strep and she should be feeling much better in just 48 hours. I have traveled myself with strep and was feeing fine by the 2nd day. Infact most likely she will be very good on this trip since you already got your illness out of the way! :flower:
Don't stop the antiobics early (fisnish every dose) and just in case bring some benedryl with your. Our dd turned out to be allergic to Peniclin while at WDW, she started it before we left. It often occurs on the 7ths day.

I did learn the hard way they have Benadrl at 1st aid and they even gave it too us for free this past trip when my 13 year old neice had an allgerigc reactions to clams (she knew she was allgegric to shrimp, but clams is new.)

My older DS went to Disney while on antibiotics for strep. He got it twice during the summer while he was volunteering at a local day camp. We did get a prescription for younger DS just in case he got strep but luckily we didn't have to use it. Make sure you replace her toothbrush after 5 days (I believe our doctor said 5 days.) Is there any way you could get the med changed to a chewable? My DS was a teenager so he just took the capsules. Have a fun trip!

The same thing happened to us, but only 3 days before our trip, and it was an ear infection, and strep for my 5 Y.O. I was so worried the plane would bother her, but after 1 day of Atb. she was sooo much better. The Dr. went ahead and gave me a script for my 2 Y.O.

We just kept the meds in the cooler. I put the bottles in a rubbermaid container, so to keep track of them, and keep them dry.

Pity he didn't give her Zithromax. That's what I took for strep--only take it for 5 days, I think.

On the bright side, at least she will have some antibiotics IN her system while you are at Disneyworld, thereby maybe lessening the chance that she'll pick up something there! :flower:

well i have strep and started zpak on mondaya nd by tuesday i felt 100 times better

the zithromax is great at 1st i was on something else and it wasnt working

Thank you for all of your kind words and wishes. I am going to call our dr. tomorrow just in case but totally agree that I am sooooo glad it was this week and not next. This lousy winter weather doesnt help either.
Need the Florida sunshine! :sunny: :sunny: :sunny:

I had to comment on this one. I don't agree with getting antibiotics for "just in case" reasons. That is exactly why we have the antibiotics we have now. The old ones just don't get rid of the microbes because antibiotics are one of the most over prescribed medications. It is scary to think that one day there might be a strain of bacteria that will be immune to any medication we have due to taking antibiotics needlessly.

I agree talk to you doctor but my doctor would NEVER give an antibiotic for prophylaxis unless it is prior to a surgical procedure that calls for it.

That being said. I had strep this year and I found a wonderful product to help with the sore throat while I was taking antibiotics. Your DD is probably too young to take it but if you guys end up coming down with it it is Tylenol Sore Throat. It was great.

Have fun I'm sure she'll feel better in a few days.

I've been there!
Call your doctor and ask for samples. Many times when we went on vacation one or more were sick and needed antibiotics. They can give the little bottles with the powder in them - all you have to do is add water. So you can take them with you to the park and don't have worry her doses being off schedule or refridgerated. You are not bothering the doctor or asking for anything special. In fact - my doctor goes out of his way to give me these when he knows I'll be away on holiday!

I'd either make an apt. the day before you leave (which we always do - especially since my kids are so prone to strep and ear infections) to make sure you're healthy or have him give you some antibiotics or an RX to take with you. Doctors know how expensive vacations are and they don't want you to be ill during one either. Of course you should only take it if you really need it.

Please get back to us and let us know what's happening.

Laura

Just wanted to add - that you aren't contagious 24 hours after you've started the anitbiotic.
After 24 hours - I would replace her toothbrush (and anyone else's who is near it) and pillow cases.

Laura
