7 days DXDDP Mom and son trip Just back 8/23

Your photos look like they're straight out of a food magazine, gorgeous! :worship: I can't wait try FF! But you have me a little scared about Kouzzina, we have a breakfast ADR there in about ten days and yikes! :crazy2:

Still loving your reviews! For whatever reason Flying Fish has never really wowed me or caught my interest but your experiences have definitely peaked my curiosity! I'm much more open to trying it out on my next trip.

Great review!

We have an ADR at Cali Grill and your reviews of flying fish have me wondering if we should book there as well?

Hi all. Thanks for your lovely comments :)
Sorry it has taken me so long to finish up. life. You know.

Here is the rest

We ended up going to HWS again on the last day. This killed me because
a. there is only so many times you can watch muppet 3d theater and
b. I had adrs for lunch at rose and crown and dinner at via napoli

Instead we went to the 50's Primetime for lunch and Kouzzina for dinner :rolleyes2

But when traveling with an eight year old certain sacrifices must be made (note to self, leave all kids at home next time)

We had an early reservation for the 50's primetime. Now I had read about the fun atmosphere her but our experience didnt exactly meet what I expected. It wasnt bad at all but there was none of the crazy antics we expected.

So here is the good: LOVED the theming. The decor was awesome and I wanted the lounge to be magically deposited in my home. The service was super friendly, professional, and prompt. The TV table was the best.
The not as good: we didnt get any of the fun joking around, no crazy antics, no desert menu on the view master :confused3
The food was mediocre at best. I wasnt expecting too much but I had heard the fried chicken was good but mine was not. Totally dried out and stringy.

So to the food.
kids salad
50skidssalad-0668.jpg

Crisp, fresh. My son said he LOVED this salad. Hilarious! He has never had iceburg lettuce before (poor child!)
My starter- crabcake
50scrabcake-0671.jpg

I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would but would not order it again. The crab was not lump, which lets be honest, it rarely is. This had a LOT going on. I didn't care for the cornmeal texture but I am sure this wouldnt bother most people. It had some interesting garnishes with the fried onion and edamame which I enjoyed. I guess I would have prefered a really decent plain crabcake than a mediocre cake with a ton of other things going on.
Kids hot dog
50skidshotdog-0674.jpg

The only thing to say about this is that they serve a whole grain bun which is nice. He enjoyed it.
I got the sampler because why not?
50ssampler-0675.jpg

I didnt care for any of it but the greens. Which aparently no one ever eats. The meatloaf tasted like it had so much binder (bread) in it had almost no flavor, the pot roast tasted like meat, no flavor to the sauce, the chicken was dry and stringy. I have seen this platter with two pieces of chicken but I got one. The coating on the chicken was tasty and not greasy but the chicken underneath was overcooked and like a bad thanksgiving turkey. The gravy on the mashed had an almost mettalic taste.
To do it again I would definitely order the chicken and hope for a better cooked piece and a larger serving of greens. I think the chicken with mashed potatoes is also served with chicken gravy rather than the brown gravy so maybe that is better too?
Also I saw some people enjoying salads that looked really really good! So that is a good alternative to a hot meal.
For desert he had make your own sundae
50skidsmakeyourownsundae-0681.jpg

Fun!
I had the brownie sundae
50sbrowniesundae-0684.jpg

Which you cant tell by the picture is enough to feed a small african nation for the day. The brownie was about the size of two large pieces of cake! Then two scoops of icecream, fudge, caramel, whipped cream and toppings. This is probably enough for a family of four to share no problem. I barely made a dent but the icecream and whipped cream were good and the sauces were yummy.

I wouldnt rush back here for the food but it was a really neat restaurant none the less. It was being unfavorably compared to my missed lunch in England so that wasnt exactly fair and maybe we gave off some kind of 'leave us alone' vibe that kept the 'fun' to a minimum. I would give it another chance though, and definitely try to get a tv table!

Your pictures are amazing along with your reviews. I cannot wait to go back to California Grill in early October and that's even after feeling underwhelmed from our visit back in 2010.

Well I hope you enjoy it this time! We never went for the fireworks which I think a lot of people like but getting there early was so relaxing, the views were amazing and it was so bright and open. The service was great I imagine in part due to the fact that they don't book all the tables at opening but instead stagger them in until the restaurant is filled.

On our last trip hubby had the chicken at 50's and his was amazing. I had the salmon which was good, but then I finished off his chicken. And I'm not really a big fan of fried chicken. Sorry that yours was so awful. The meatloaf looks like it's a lot of filler. Such a shame because it's not hard to make a tasty meatloaf. It actually looks like a peanut butter brownie/blondie and not meatloaf at all. LOL

If you have read the whole thread you will know that going into Kouzzina I already had two marks against. Our terrible breakfast experince and also that I had to cancel our Via Napoli ADR.
That said there were some really good things about our dinner at Kouzzina but not enough to make me want to return.

After we were seated we received a basket of bread and two nice olive oils and some olives
kouzzinaolivesandoil-0692.jpg

The bread was mediocre but the olives were tasty and my son enjoyed mixing the two oils as one was very 'green' the other very buttery.
He started with
kouzzinakidsalad-0696.jpg

Salad. Good but he did not enjoy the raddichio. I dont know any eight year olds who enjoy radicchio.
I started with the calamari with smoked tomato sauce.
calamari-0699.jpg

This dish was excellent! Light batter, perfectly cooked calamari (with legs) The smoked tomato sauce was rich and had a nice depth of flavor with the smoke but wasnt heavy or BBQ like. Yum!
For his dinner he had the kids pasta with grilled chicken.
Kouzzinakidspastaandchicken-0705.jpg

This was not good. the chicken was burnt on the outside and totally overcooked throughout. I tasted it myself. flavor less, tough, yuck. The pasta was ok. Not overcooked but nothing fabulous about it at all. I think most kids would be completely turned off by the big chunks of tomato and large herb pieces. He ate some of it.
I ordered the whole fish. I wasnt going to. I was going to get the lamb. I am bummed I didn't get the lamb but this wasnt bad. We had a server 'issue'. He was totally clueless. I asked him how the fish was, if it was fresh etc. He said that he didnt like fish but they made him try it and he even ate some and it was 'fluffy' and didn't 'taste like fish' Wha? So I was still on the fence about the fish and I asked him if it was local (a big decision maker for me) and he said "yes" so I said ok I will have the fish. and then he said 'well its like local..to the ocean' and I was like
and the damage was done.
This should have prevented me from allowing to massacre (oops I mean debone) my fish when it came out but I asked him if it was scaled (so that I could do it myself) and he said ' no. its really fluffy.'
Seriously. Seriously? Oh dear.
Fish Before
Kouzzinawholefish-0708.jpg

Kouzzinawholefish2-0706.jpg

Fish After
Kouzzinawholefishdeboned-0711.jpg

Now you are probably thinking I am going to say this was awful but it certainly wasnt! This was light and flavorfull. The fennel and other strong veggies added a wonderful strong and spicy flavor without overpowering the delicate fish. It was superbly cooked and very fresh.
I would love to see this dish with another presentation. something with garlic, herbs and lemons perhaps. Like I said it was pretty spicy and had eyes, so not for everyone. But it was excelent. Highly recommended.

here is the caveat. By this time the restaurant was so so so so so LOUD. there were children SCREAMING and just the regular noise was deafening. We litterally had to SHOUT to hear each other accross the table. this was terribly unpleasant and detracted from our experience immensely. The restaurant was nowhere near capacity so I cant begin to imagine what it is like full. Anyo
ne with sensory issues or sensitive children should stay far away.

We finished with design a cupcake
Kouzzinakidsmakeyourowncupcake-0714.jpg

Super cute and an excellent presentation!
I had the greek 'donuts'
Kouzzinagreekdonuts-0715.jpg

Which I thought would be light but these were super heavy and doughy, like fried pizza dough chunks. Not greasy at all, the outside was perfectly crisp. They just werent good. I couldnt decide whether I liked the exterior honey/cinnamon so I just stopped eating them. Oh well.

Over all the fish was great as was the calamari but when you add everything else up I would not go back. The server :confused: the NOISE, the terrible kids meal. Just not worth it.
I about cried thinking I had missed out on another meal at FF or CG for these last two meals. Oh well. Live and learn.

But honestly if you like whole fish and greek flavors, they don't disapoint there. I do respect them not 'dumbing down' the food to please everybody. I was shocked at the number of small crying children at this restaurant too. No one excusing them from the table or taking them for a walk. I understand it is disney but if you have a table with eight adults I dont see it as a hardship for one of them to get up and help out with a little kid who is melting down so that everyone else in the restaurant can enjoy their dinner.

Overall I would say that some really high highs are what I remember most about the food. They certainly outweighed all the poor and mediocre experiences we had.
The deluxe dining is a lot of food if you feel you have to eat all of it. I didnt so it worked out fine. It is also too much food if you like potatoes. Disney seems to looove its mashed potatoes. Good luck getting through two squares a day with two pounds of mashed potatoes between them. We also loaded up the signatures which I would do again. However I think in further analysis the signatures were not all that much more expensive than many of the other sit downs so paying out of pocket probably makes more sense especially for someone like me who ordered wine with dinner that I paid for anyway and not a soft drink and doesnt really care for desert.
A few times I wished I had ordered two aps instead of a main dish but the dining plan made me think that would be a waste. I doubt that to be true. Almost all of the appetizers I enjoyed were excellent. Far above average. They were inventive and fresh and well prepared with unique flavors and textures. I would not hestiate to do a tapas style meal at any of the signatures with another adult. You would probably get an amazing variety of fantastic food. I would probably have been inclined to order a lot more salads. They sounded amazing and I love a good salad. Unfortunately on the plan they are not a good 'bargain'.
It was really really hot when we were there so the table service lunches were a welcome break. If the weather was more temperate I dont think I would have enjoyed taking that much time out of the day to eat. Especially with a signature dinner coming later!
That and having to plan our days around dining reservations made for a lot of last minute changes. Next time I would probably try to book my favorites for dinner and maybe a couple special lunches.
Besides the amazing food and spectacular service at the signatures we definitely noticed that adults and children alike were on their 'good' behaivior. It seems children who are taken to these kind of restaurants are used to behaving themselves for three hour dinners or are alternately whisked away before causing inconvenience for other diners. I have one child who will happily sit through a dinner like that, one that might and one I wouldnt bring into any place like that if you paid me. I think every parent needs to use their judgement on whether they and their child/ren would actually enjoy a dining experience. I dont think its worth it to be in a beautiful expensive restaurant while scarfing your food in anticipation of a meltdown. We've all been there, I am sure.

Out of the signature restaurants we went to I would say flying fish and cali grill are a dead tie. The cali grill was so fresh, bright and relaxing. The flying fish was so complex, vibrant and exciting. I will still dream about the creme brulee and carpaccio at le cellier. and the duck at les chefs was beyond.

All in all the meal plan was essentially 'free' for us. When booking the trip I had planned to upgrade our room view from a standard. When I realized the cost for this was the same as the deluxe dining plan I went for the dining instead. At check in we received a beautiful room with a balcony overlooking all the boardwalk action. So we ended up getting both. :wizard: So there is your disney magic.

It was a fun trip and though i am enjoying being home I am sure we will be back for our favorites (and maybe find a few new ones) soon enough.

The food at California Grill certainly wasn't bad by any means. It was actually good, but do you know how you hype yourself up to the point where you think you'll be eating gold...lol? Watching the fireworks was amazing so we have a 7:45PM reservation on our DD's 6th birthday so she can see the fireworks there :). I think she'll love it. She's never been as it was a date night for just DH and I back in 2010.

On our last trip hubby had the chicken at 50's and his was amazing. I had the salmon which was good, but then I finished off his chicken. And I'm not really a big fan of fried chicken. Ha! Honestly I would not have been surprised to find out it was a vegetarian 'meat'loaf. That is what it tasted like. Arguably I am not a huge meat eater but a good meatloaf is a good meatloaf.
I would certainly go back and try the chicken again. The crust was light and flavorful and not at all greasy. Once again I think we were victim of having all the dishes precooked and waiting for the opening tables like at liberty tree. So while it seems like a good idea to go to dinner at opening time (fabulous service) lunch is not the same (precooked food).

Also I wanted to say there were some nice varied and healthy options on the kids menus. If your kid only eats kid food they will probably end up with a lot of pizza, pasta and hotdogs at the sitdowns. I was bummed they didnt seem to put as much effort until the kids "real" food as they did into the adult food. Three times my son was served food so ill prepared that they never would have even tried to pass it off on an adult. Bummer. I should have sent it back to make a point but it didnt occur to me at the time. If this happens to you, please complain. There is no reason the kids should have to choose between 'kid' food or badly prepared 'real' food.
Some of the restaurants really went the extra mile with the kids deserts. You can see through the pictures which ones these were. It was really great to see my kid's face light up when served such out of the ordinary treats he would never normally get at home. It was a little bit of magic and really appreciated.
Where we live we have many great restaurants with really really bad service. This is just the way it is as we live in a tourist destination that relies on seasonal help in the summer and college students in the off season. We have very little in the way of professional servers.
The servers at Disney postively blew me away. They were kind and considerate, prompt and courteous, warm and friendly. I tipped the heck out of them because they were, IMO, exceptional across the board. One thing I can't stand is when people treat my children like stupid adults. They arent stupid adults, they are children. They know when they are being patronised and they dont like it. Its disrespectful the way a lot of people treat kids. These servers treated my child like a guest. Not like an annoyance. They listened to him and treated him like any other patron. It made our experience all the more enjoyable. They should be commended on a job well done.

Thank you for all your reviews and comments.

We are attempting dxddp in October with a 6 nearly 7 year old so i've really appreciated all your comments and photos of the childrens food aswell as your own.

You are so welcome! Thanks to you too, I read your princess tea review and it brought tears to my eyes. I can't wait to do that with my daughter during her special trip in a year or so.

Would love to see your review..what a great idea to take your children on their own special trips.

Excellent reviews. I've been a big fan of DxDP for quite some time and I love Cali Grill and Flying Fish, so I felt your reviews were right up my alley. Although I do love the whole fish at Kouzzina. I'm glad you compared the breakfast at Kouzzina and Captain's Grill. We're staying at BC and I was wondering if it was worthwhile heading to breakfast at Kouzzina and it sounds like that would be a clear 'no.' I also appreciated the info about the oversalted steak at HBD. We're having dinner there next month and I'll be staying far an away from the steak.

My DH ordered this and he was completely defeated by it. I think I didn't order dessert that meal, and I could only help him with like two bites. It was indeed huge.

My sampler, a couple weeks ago, looked exactly the same and I completely agree with your review. My DD17 was celebrating her birthday that day and I thought this would be the perfect place. I asked for someone who was really in character because she would love it and thought we lucked out but nothing. None of the servers we in character really. It's a shame.

Our sampler (we are tiny eaters and share) was luke warm to cold and really not good except for the mashed potatoes which were the only thing we ate. The pot roast was mostly fat with a few shreds of beef we could get off the fat. The meat we did taste was good. The meatloaf was cold, dry and was left there. I would say it was 10% meat, 20% vegetables and the rest bread. The string beans were very garlicy which I love but not sure if anyone else would, and we substituted the greens for fries for my DD (it was her birthday).

We did learn the sampler comes with 2 pieces of dark or one breast. We originally recieved dark, which neither of us eat) and realized the mistake and asked for white if possible. The breast was dry and cold so we pulled off the crust and skin to find a chicken nugget's worth or very dry meat. I didn't even taste it. My DD asked for ranch dressing to be able to eat some.

Her milkshake was good and we tried the onion rings which were very good. Love the restaurant and had I not known about the normal antics our server was absolutely wonderful. I'm glad I went but after trying a sample of the foods I would care for and being disappointed I think I would try somewhere else next time.

Thank you for your reviews. I really appreciate your taking the time to post. I love honest, thorough reviews!
