7 Day Western Caribbean - 9/9/06 to 9/16/06

Day 6 – At Sea

Our second day at sea, and we slept in because we knew that we were having Brunch at Palo. We had invited our tablemates Julie & Kristy, since they had been unable to get brunch reservations and we believe that brunch is not to be missed… If I had to choose between brunch & dinner, I’d take brunch every time.

I’ll try to post pictures of the spread, but to keep us going until later I had Stollen (with fresh berries, my favorite), cherry custard pastries, chocolate croissants, Baked Eggs, and part of a sweet pizza, Mike had various pastries, Ahi & Shrimp shooters (which he’s still raving about), Chicken Parmesan, veal w/asparagus and a port sauce, part of a margarita pizza. We tried their fresh juice of the day (watermelon grape juice), but neither of us were impressed with it. Unfortunately, we had a bad sugar day for the desserts – everything was grainy to one degree or another. Despite this, the pots de crème, key lime taster, and tiramisu were all OK.

I like that they have re-sized the desserts to a couple of bites each… That way, you don’t end up wasting most of a full sized dessert that you don’t like. Also, it made me feel less guilty (in the I’m eating way too many calories sort of way) about trying different things.

Our waiter for brunch was Aleksander, who was vastly funny. He joked and teased with us all through the meal. One recurring theme was the fact that PJ (the Maitre D’ for Palo) was bringing his family on the Magic for vacation in a few weeks time… All I can say (and not get Aleksander in trouble) is that he does a very funny PJ impersonation. Mike says that that’s probably too much, but hopefully PJ isn’t reading this.

After brunch, we went down to the Treasure Ketch for the Captain’s Signing. We’d bought the Caribbean map earlier in the cruise, and had Captain Tom sign it. He even drew in our course for us. I took pictures, just to prove that he actually signed. We’d also spent waaaayyy too much money at the shops, so we had a Helmsman Mickey (that they were selling for $20 if you bought more than $100 at one time) framed print that we had him sign too.

We took our signed stuff back to the cabin, and wandered around the ship for a little while. Mike stalled in the Promenade lounge to look at more stuff being auctioned off by Park West, while I went on the Galley Tour.

The Galley Tour was shorter than I expected, and the kitchens were smaller. Having fresh out of the oven chocolate cookies was nice, and seeing how organized the kitchens are was very instructive. Our guide emphasized that they used very few chemicals in the kitchens (he says his mother taught him that everything could be cleaned with some combination of water, vinegar and bleach).

When I was done with the Galley Tour, I met Mike back at the Promenade Lounge – to find that he’d bought another piece, a Willard Donald Duck. Today was the last auction, so I didn’t need to worry about him buying more – just paying for what we’d already bought.

We did a little random Pin Trading before going up to the Cove Café to meet with Pete (of DIS Boards fame). We talked a bit about the state of Disney with Pete, and what we wished they were doing instead of what they were doing, when Bill and Tracy stumbled across us. After making the introductions, the four of us chatted a bit, both with Pete and with some of the crew members we’d become friendly with (who had also stopped into the Café after Pete left).

It was here that I made my best pin trade of the cruise. One of the people we’d talked to quite a bit was Cody (the shopping guru), and in the course of our conversation she asked if I liked pearls. The answer, was of course, yes. So she handed me a pouch with a choaker of black (or dark gray) pearls. As we got ready to leave, she noticed a pin on my lanyard that she liked… So I gave it to her. I can now honestly say that I have traded pins for pearls.

Now, to really embarrass my DH: While were hanging out in the Café, Mike had been drinking some sort of smoothie (he had a couple of them), and I thought he’d just put them all on his tab. So when we left and he didn’t sign a receipt, I didn’t think anything of it, but it turns out that he’d walked out without paying for any of his smoothies (or the hot chocolate he got for me). Bill & Tracy, being the good sports they are covered him (and even went so far as to not mention it, until we met them during the dessert buffet). Needless to say, Mike was mortified. He tried to make it up to Bill by buying him a glass of champagne during the buffet, but Bill wasn’t in much of a champagne mood.

For dinner I had the Mushroom soup, salad w/Duck Jerky, Parmesan Crusted Chicken w/fettuccini, and Amaretto Cheesecake. Mike had the Garlic Shrimp, Chilled Tomato Consommé, Surf & Turf, and Cherries Jubilee. I don’t remember much else about dinner (and only that much because I took notes).

After dinner, we went to see Rick Pupura’s comedy show. We were supposed to meet Bill & Tracy, but we couldn’t find them. I think the only complaint I have about this show was that it was too short. Rick was quite funny, and his magic tricks were entertaining. Rockin’ Bar D was packed, and I’m not surprised now that I’ve seen his show.

The last stop for the evening was the vaunted Dessert Buffet in Lumiere’s. Frankly, I was unimpressed. There was a lot of chocolate, but very little variety in the desserts. Some of the sugar sculptures were beautiful, but you weren’t allowed to eat any of them (and I find that if something looks beautiful, it often tastes awful). We nibbled, but didn’t have anything worth remembering. After we had finished eating, and declined the glasses of champagne they were pushing on people (which are not gratis, just as the drinks of the day they push on deck during the sailaway party, they are $9.75/glass – which is a lot in my book), we ran into Bill and Tracy in the hallway. We stood and chatted with them all the way through a second time through the line for the dessert buffet (since they hadn’t been yet). It was at this point that Bill mentioned the ill-fated Cove Café incident.

As we were trying to wrap up the evening outside of Lumiere’s we met the Foxxy Boys and talked with them for a bit with Bill & Tracy. I think they were a little surprised that my aging red-neck looking DH could actually be unfazed by “Connie” – Little did they realize that not only are we from San Francisco, but we have friends that regularly cross-dress. We finally made it to bed @ 12.45am Saturday.

I am liking your report. We were supposed to go Western but were switched to Eastern because of Ernesto. We still had a good time but we were really pumped to go Western.

Thank you.

I think if I had to do it again, I'd probably do a Western. DH says he doens't care - St. John's was great on the Eastern (tho' he didn't care for St. Maartin), Cozumel and Key West were cool on the Western, but he missed the 3rd day at sea...

Either way, we haven't had a bad cruise on the Magic (even when we went on a 3 day back in 2000) :boat:

Ahhh, your DH made mention of this on my TR. All I can say is "It Happens"

There are probably "Wanted" posters up all over the ship now.

Thanks, I was sorta wondering if anyone was actually reading it...

Free - sort of. We had to buy the Platinum Passport book from the shopping guide. Cost $20.00. We did get more than $20 worth of stuff from it (especially the Del Sol bags - I love those for grocery shopping). What else did we get? several pairs of earrings, a glass stir stick for DH, a couple of coins, a glasses cleaning kit, a couple of mediocre cigars for DH, the Del Sol bags (3 of 'em)... There might have been more, but that might be it.

Sara, love the report so far! Gotta work on mine now :lmao: I got you a coin and some tanzanite earrings. Also got you charms at DI in all ports, including St. Kitts, they gave us Cancun's charms. I'll be sending them soon, promise :goodvibes

So how does it all end?????? Can't wait to hear what happened on Castaway Cay ;)

By the way, we got a delivery that our neighbor's intercepted while we were on the Wonder. Thank you!!!!!!! Now I have bags for the Mickey room guests :lmao:

OOPS - I gotta learn to check who's logged in on the computer - This is Sara posting under Mike's login:

I'll try to get to it tonight... Things have been more than a little crazy since we got back. :confused3

Glad you got the package. I need to send you out a CD of pictures - I just haven't had time.

Hi Peter & Jenn - when are you going to put up a TR from the 11 day adventure? How were the Muppet entertainments?

Day 7 – Castaway Cay

Another day, another Room service breakfast: Milk, toast, fruit, bagel & cream cheese, pretty boring, but better than getting out of bed early enough to eat up at Topsiders.

Around 9:30, we met Tracy & Bill up on Deck 10, collected our gear and headed out to Castaway Cay. I went back to the room to grab our postcards, and when I got off, they asked if Mike was still on the ship… ???!! I told them that he was outside waiting for me, and I was told politely, but firmly that he was sill aboard. Once I got off the ship, and met Mike and Bill and Tracy by the post office, I told Mike that he wasn’t actually there. And he went back and sorted it out. It turns out that he had grabbed my lost key to the world instead of his .

Once on the island, the four of us headed out to the beach after a quick stop at the post office for postcard stamps. We did the snorkel trail backwards (I think), starting at the far end of the family beach. Much to my dismay, our camera housing fogged up AGAIN! This means I’m dependant on the kindness of strangers (that’s you Tracy) for pictures of our snorkel adventure. There weren’t many fish out, and the water was so murky near the shore that I despaired of seeing anything. But once we got away from the shore and near the edge of how far out they’ll let you go without yelling at you, we managed to find a fish or two (and a Mickey and a submarine).

After our first foray into the water, we repaired to the Heads up Bar. I had a Mudslide, and Mike had a Nutty Buddy (which he said had too much ice). We sat, drank, and soaked up some sun – and dried out a bit.

Having fortified ourselves, we took the tram over to Serenity Bay. We got slightly less than halfway down the beach when we found an umbrella without people, and set up camp. After 15 or 20 minutes, we were joined by Matt & Laurie who we’d met during the Golden Mickeys. We enjoyed the shade, I wrote out our postcards… Matt & Laurie let us use a coupon for a couple of floats… We got more drinks. Eventually, Tracy, Bill & I snorkeled out to the motor wreck (Tracy gas better directions that I can remember – I just followed her). We actually got better sea life (and better visibility) on that trip than the snorkel lagoon jaunt. We saw a couple of starfish, fish with different colors, and a very cool purple coral.

On the way back to the ship, we stopped at the store to pick up a shirt for me & pins for Mike, but we really weren’t in the mood to shop. I was pretty beat from all the swimming and the heat and I was ready to go back “home.”

We were back on Board by 4:30 pm. I went up to the Rainforest room for a bit and used the Spa shower – definitely better than the one in the room. Mike stayed in the room and took a short nap and used that shower. After I got back, we started packing.

We stopped off at Bill & Tracy’s room for something, and helped them kill a bottle of Mango (? – Help me out here Tracy) wine. Tracy told us that John (Grumpy Gramps) was looking for a good home for a rolling cooler and 10-12 bottles of water (since otherwise, he’d just have to leave them), so we called his room to see if we could help him out, but didn’t get a hold of him. Oh well, back to our room to try and finish packing.

Now, let me start by saying that I thought we’d tried to pack our bags with extra room in them (because you always acquire “stuff” while on vacation), but it wasn’t enough – quite. We ended up rearranging our bags several times (and using the cooler that John kindly gave us – but that comes later) before we got all of our stuff packed.

Somewhere in the packing frenzy, we decided that we wouldn’t have time for dinner in the dining room (and still be able to see POC II, which was the only item on my “Must Do” list for the cruise left). So we ordered dinner from Room service – a BLT, Steak Sandwich, Ceaser Salad, Cookies, and white chocolate cheesecake. We barely managed to get everything packed up (and one last shopping run – the Twice Charmed CD, a Jacket on sale, MORE pins (for a friend this time)) before the starting time for POC II.
Pirates was OK, I’m glad I didn’t actually pay to see it, but I’m equally glad that we watched it. While were watching POC, John talked to our cabin steward & managed to drop off the cooler (THANK YOU, Again), and with that we were able to get all the last bits of junk into "carry off." We finally made it to bed at 1:45 am

Yes, you got it all right. Backward through the course, Mango wine from Key West Winery. Also, I did get quite a few pictures. I do have one of you by the Lost and Found sign (not very well framed though). I also got many of the purple coral. As soon as I sort through them all, I'll send you a CD. I can even send you some from the other islands if you want :goodvibes

Great trip report and great pics! :thumbsup2 I'm glad you had such a wonderful cruise.

Here's a picture of the purple coral Sara spoke of.
