This isn't only relevant to Disney cruises, but has anyone packed for a week long cruise with just 1 Carry-On per person? With the Carry On being the size of airline restricted 22 x 16 x 9. (some airlines differ, but that's the general) This would have to include the restriction on liquids..etc.

I will traveling to Europe in the Spring for a week cruise, and would LOVE to not have to check in luggage. If you have, any tips?

Certainly it can be done. I'm sure there are those who've done it. I, on the other hand, could not :teeth:.

Done it. What do you need to know? I will say this we use 1 carry on and one personal item for each of us. It is just me and my husband. Your personal item can be a backpack. Roll your clothes (it's old advice but it works). Use ziplock bags and push the air our. Use personal items for liquids and toiletries. find clothes that can ball up small without too much wrinkling. Ask me anything. I'll help with what I know. :D

The airline I travel with allows ONE free checked bag and ONE free Carry On. That Carry-On could be the 22" rolling luggage or a hand bag or laptop case..they use a "Piece" system. I wouldn't even be able to bring a pocketbook if I decide to take on this challenge. (but I could wear an anorak jacket with lots of pockets that I suppose can be used for things like passports, wallets, etc.)

The cruise ship does offer laundry services (also piece system) which is inexpensive...so I can do laundry half way through the cruise if needed.

I just don't know how people could pack clothes, shoes, electronics, make up, medication etc...in ONE bag...but people who do say it's the most freeing experience and they never go back. I like the idea of keeping my luggage with me (not that I've ever lost luggage) and be unpacked in my cabin as soon as we're allowed in...and be off the ship as soon as they get the all clear.

Interesting. I've been on spirit and only allowed on free personal item (WDW trip in a weekender bag did happen). But I've never heard of a carry-on but no personal item. In any case not much changes. You roll clothes. Stuff shoes with socks, belts and small items. Use ziplock bags and push the air out. And look into travel space bags.

The airline I am traveling with doesn't allow a personal item along with the carry-on. Just ONE piece, period....(bastids..lol) Unlike Delta who I flew with this weekend allows both.

Do you do laundry on the cruise, or do you pack enough to last the whole week?

I pack enough for the whole week. Usually most of my clothes I call "throw and go" they roll up tiny and don't require ironing. Also I found this a while back http://myjetsetstyle.co/post/3798015559/how-to-pack-like-a-freaking-ninja-8-days-in-a She's crazier than me. The key I have found is planning your outfits ahead of time and having pieces that are interchangeable as well. Like jeans you know you can wear more than once. Also you don't need a lot of shoes but if you like options look into folding flats and sandals. They take up little room. I always rewear over pieces like sweaters and scarves. Wear your bulkiest stuff in layers on the plane.

I could do it, but my formal attire would suffer (obviously). One mid-week laundry would go a long way in helping out with your planning, just don't try it on a sea day because it will be busy. And you'll probably need to buy toiletries before boarding. But I'd definitely need to visit a post office before heading home to mail home all my souvenirs! :-)

Maybe I am reading this wrong?

We know that our passengers may have important items they wish to bring with them onto the plane. Nevertheless, we all have to take into consideration that space on board is limited, and that certain objects are prohibited in the cabin.

What can you take?

We have to restrict the weight and size allowance of hand baggage accepted on board, so that everyone can enjoy a comfortable and safe trip.

In order to ensure something can be transported in the cabin, either under the seat or in the overhead compartment, please make sure your baggage does not exceed the maximum size allowance of 115 cm / 45 in: 55x40x20 cm (22x16x8 in).

  • Economy Class: 1 piece up to 8 kg / 17 lbs
  • Executive Class: 2 pieces with a total combined weight of 16 kg / 35 lbs

Besides the hand baggage allowance, just one of the following items may also be taken on board:

  • A laptop case or sleeve or shoulder bag (maximum size allowance: 40x30x10 cm / 16x12x4 in)
  • Mobility aids
  • Medical instruments

Please make sure that your baggage is within the size and weight allowance permitted. If it exceeds these specifications, it should then be checked in at the airport drop-off point. Please see Consult the opening and closing time of baggage check-in.

It's confusing, as I booked "Economy Class" which states one piece, but below that it states and I can take just one of the following...including a shoulder bag...which I interpret to mean a tote. I can fit ALOT in a tote. Dragynally, I'll check out that link.

I did a 4 night cruise and 3 nights at Disney with carry ons (plus the personal items) The personal item for my son contained things like his puddle jumper and colouring books, and so many toys on the way home. So you probably wouldn't need that. We actually had too many clothes. It is possible I would think. Though I like to have a purse type personal item to keep all the paperwork, passports etc in and close to me at all times. Now my son is small :) so his clothes are as well, but I am not ;) I did also take a dress up outfit for each of us that was worn once. And shoes, wearing runners but with sandals and flip flops, and dressier shoes for me (he wore his runners). We wore the bulkier clothes we needed as much as possible. I do not like having to pay for checked bags so would do this again. Rolling things up helps, ziplocks for sure. I watched a bunch of youtube videos on how to pack light. I planned to use the provided shampoo/conditioner/body wash as much as possible. And didn't bring some of the small sample/travel sized things home if they were empty or even close to it. Made more room for those toys. I did not do laundry at all.

Oh I also forgot! A regular deodorant fits when in the flight size requirement and you can pack more than one travel size liquid. So 2 or 3 travel toothpastes if you need them. The only thing I had an issue with was sunblock. But I needed more than a travel size amount. Definitely use what Disney gives you for hair and body.

Yes you are (sort of) reading it wrong. It is super confusing. Basically you can have one carryon bag and a shoulder bag. And the shoulder bag usually mean no bigger than a weekender or large purse.

I have watched some YouTube videos and they make it look so easy..lol...some people are really pros at this. I usually bring way more stuff than I need and then some of it doesn't even get worn. I can pick up things like conditioner one I arrive at the Airport and can use the supplied shampoo and shower gel. (conditioner I can NOT go without and those little tubes would do nothing, so I would need to purchase a large bottle and then just throw it away at the end of the cruise.)

Ok...so I was misinformed...I CAN carry a personal item in addition to a carry-on....that gives me more options...I can pack my make up, documents, medicine bag, iPad, iPhone, umbrella etc in a tote, that will open up considerable space in the carry on luggage! I might just pull it off.

Carry-on Baggage Rules & Fees 1. TAP Discount, Basic, Classic & Plus classes are allowed 1 carry-on bag, with up to 6kg/13lb and measuring up to 55x40x20cm or 22x16x7in, or a total of 115cm/45in. Tap Executive Class is allowed 2 carry-on bags, with up to 10kg/22lb and measuring up to 55x40x20cm or 22x16x7in, or a total of 115cm/45in. 2. In addition, all classes can bring onboard the following personal items: handbag/purse, overcoat, wrap or blanket; small camera and/or binoculars; reasonable number of duty-free items, umbrella, laptop computer, infant’s onboard needs; food for onboard consumption, assistive devices, a child safety seat or baby bassinet & acollapsible stroller. 3. Items exceeding the carry-on requirements, but needed to be brought onboard are considered ‘Cabin Baggage’, which includes voluminous, valuable or fragile items (i.e., art works, musical instruments, electronic equipment, etc.); acceptance thereof is subject to: (a) weight not to exceed 60kg/185lb and purchase of an additional seat; (b) items with larger dimensions or weight require the purchase of a second seat.

Right, a large purse, sort of like a tote and I do have a "weekender" from Vera Bradley that is pretty spacious...but might be too big as a personal item.

Nah. As long as it squishes it fits... That was funnier in my head. :o

Be careful on the tote dimensions. The 4" deep restriction means you might not be able to cram in as much as you think.

The other tricky part would be the weight restriction on the carryon. 17 lbs really isn't much, particularly if your carryon is a wheeled case. I just bought an ultralight spinner from Samsonite and that weighs over 4 lbs on its own. My previous carryon spinner when stuffed with clothes was usually 23-28 lb and that was a case that weighed < 8 lb.

Stupid question... How deep are the cruise bags we get as castaway club members? Because that's what I usually use for my tote/weekender.

Yes, that is a concern. My "ultralight" Samsonite is 7 lbs...which means I can only pack 10 pounds of clothing....there is no weight limit on the personal item though...so the heavier things like medications and make up can go in the tote.

I can wear my boots, jacket, sweater, on the plane...(I can undress on the plan, and use as my "blanket"...but the heavier pieces, I would wear.

Same with my DD's clothes, she will wear the heavier things and lighter things would get packed. She can also bring her Disney backpack for incidentals.

We MIGHT just be able to pull this off.

Oooh good idea...that tote is bigger than my current tote but smaller than my weekender, so it would work well. I think it has a zipper, right? As for purses, I have a flat Coach crossbody bad that I can use everyday that's small, but big enough to fit my iPad.
