I thought John McCains concession speech was very graceful, it is tougher to be noble in defeat then victory!

I agree -- his speech was lovely, and very gracious.

Now I guess we have to go thru another election here since Joe Biden won the senate seat again. AT least I guess that's what will happen, I haven't heard how they will handle it yet.

I only thought of that for the first time last night! He won't be needing that senate seat now.

Joe Biden's term as Senator was over, so he was up for re-election to the Senate. He won that election, but also won as Obama's VP. He'll have to step down as the Senator of Delaware, and his open position will need to be filled until the next election.

The vice-president elect (Biden) was a senator, and ran again (so he could stay in the senate if the Democratic ticket lost -- also, he would have been running for reelection already when picked by Obama for the VP slot) . . . now he can't be in the senate since he will be VP, so they will have to select another Dem nominee and let that person run against the Republican.

On the news last night, they said that the governor of DE would appoint Biden's successor to finish out his term when he announces that he is leaving the seat. That new Senator would serve until the next election in 2 years. (I think-it was late and I was tired)

They all beat me to explaining why we would possibly need another election in DE.
He has been a senator for the last 36 years, his new position will be quite a change for him. Now I guess he will actually live in Wash. DC rather than commute everyday by train as he has the entire time he's been a senator.

Can't they do both ?? Over here in the UK the Prime Minister and deputy PM and all the front benchers all hold parlimentary seats and they have to represent their constituents as well.

No they are only allowed to hold 1 publicly elected office.

Each state has 2 senators that represent them in congress.

Linda was reading the thread, and commented on how cool it is to be talking with people from other countries. It is really neat to see your interest in our election, and we really enjoy reading about life over there. I'm sure we'll all have a lot more to share over the next 2 years too.

Yep, what they said. Biden will now be the President of the Senate. Well after he is sworn in on January 20th!

It will be interesting to see the cabinet picks.

Yes the election is all the buzz at school today. Some students happy, some not. I explained to them what a wonderful process we have here, a peaceful transfer of power. We now need to all get behind our new president (whether we voted for him or not) and get this country back on track.

One of the few actual jobs required of the vice president is to break a tied vote in the senate if it occurs -- if he remained senator, he would in theory have two votes in such a case, which would not be fair. In reality, the vice pres is required to do so many things (mainly standing in for the pres when needed at events) that I don't think a VP could fairly serve his or her constituents in the senate even if it was allowed.
