If there are more surprises yet to come, they'll likely still be in the financial sector (derivatives? credit-default swaps? Insurance?) rather than housing.
Curiously enough, I'm not really all that worried about housing. The drop in values so far has really not been all that unusual (at least not here in California, where housing prices look have looked like a rising sawtooth wave for decades). Long term trends for the country are for a recovery - the U.S. has positive population growth (slightly above ZPG natural + immigration) which means demand will ultimately eat up the excess supply.

I think you nailed it that the real surprise is that the market isn't factoring in the deficit/national debt. It just doesn't make sense for the dollar to be this strong. The real question though is where to go with that? If not the dollar what - Euros? Pounds? Gold?

Hi Dan nice to see you this side of midnight :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Thanks. I have to watch my time here - if the posting rate continues like this for the next 21 months and I actually paid attention, it's more than likely I'll be way too poor to actually go. Gotta work sometime :rolleyes1.

So how much do we chat.....well 1st Baltic cruise post count = 1256, Mickey's Baltic Ballyhoo !! (maybe) 2124 :woohoo: :woohoo:

The Reason the market's are collapsing right now is because of the hedge funds selling off!

Its funny I blame them for a good portion of this mess. (as well as those stupid derivitives)

The Hedge funds were the main reason for the run up in Oil! What happened the last time we had extreme spikes in the cost of energy 1973 bad recession stagflation 1979-1980 same thing!

Guess what!

Thats my 2 cents!

One of my Majors was Economics!:teacher:

Dont get me going you should hear my beliefs on what the USA should do for an energy policy!

Better than anything the 2 nit wits running for office have put forward.

Was talking about that & global warming while taking my daughter to figure skating today She told me I should be President:lmao: :rotfl:

Nicest thing any of my kids ever told me!

I'm just back from ds7's football tournament and have to get ready for a Halloween party, but updated the 1st post with family information from the most recent PM's I received today. Both of my boys have games tomorrow so I will try and update everything early morning or the evening if I get anyone's new info to add.

It looks like I'll never be able to catch up with all the new posts thanks to my crazy schedule and the boy's football games/practices, so if you are new to this thread, welcome and please PM me your information and I'll be glad to add it. We're up to 32 families!!

Having watched economists talking at length for the past month or more, it's hard for me to see that us armchair economists could do much worse than the experts. Most of them can't agree on what's going on anyway.

The way I see it, economics and politics are two different things. I'm carefully avoiding any specifics on political preferences on the election (other than generic poking fun at the lot of them) because I know that's a potentially divisive and emotional topic.

However, the way I see it we're facing a global economic crisis - and one which bears direct impact on us (exchange rates being one clear way). Also, I think there's a sense that the forces that are moving the economy are bigger than the ability of politicians to handle anyway (frankly, despite my own preference in the election, I have absolutely no confidence that either candidate's plan will really work, nor faith that one plan is actually better than the other).

So hearing what Andrew and other UK folk have to say about their perception of the economy is really interesting to me, as is hearing from people with different backgrounds and insights and from other places in the U.S. Who knows, maybe the knowledge will allow us to help each other?

November 5th 1605 when Guy Fawks attempted to blow up Parliment during the state opening....we celebrate the fact that he was unsuccessful by having large bonfire upon which we burn effegies of said Mr fawks and set off fireworks...............

...............the problem is the shops start selling them way too early and kids start buying them and letting them off

So it's Guy Fawks Day. If you had said that then I would have known what you were talking about, I just didn't know the date.

Maryann can I change my name from Pirate Chattylicious to Queen Chattylicious please I think if fits my personality ssooooooooooooo much better :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

We've officially transfered our dummy booking to this cruise and are so exited to see so many from the EB PC Repo:woohoo:

Do I pm the OP with my info for page 1 ?

It's me (Laurie), DH (Darren), DS (Andrew-will be 16 in 2010), DD (Kelly -will be 13 in 2010).

We're living in Northern Viginia, but DH and I are originally from NY (me- Long Island and Darren -Yorktown Heights).

We are hoping to arrive in London a couple days before the cruise so that we can sightsee a little. Has anybody made plans for a pre-cruise London stay yet ?
