This made me laugh!! I did walk uphill both ways to get to my high school. My kids always gave me the eye , yeah sure Mom. But I brought my son to NJ when my Mom was very ill and I took him to the high school and he finally saw I was telling the truth. I had to cross a bridge to get to and from school. So I went up and over both ways.

Now that is funny.

I remember the blizzard of 78. I was a senior in hs and we had semester finals. Got there and 1/2 later they canceled school. Got a ride home with a teacher who lived near by. I got let out at an intersection near home and it took me less time to walk the rest of the way home, than it took to get out of the parking lot! We use to get a lot of snow storms in the 70's. Now my dd school closed down a couple of weeks ago because it was too cold!?

Remember those pictures of 128 and all the cars & trucks snowed in near Blue Hill, I lived a mile from that!
Still do just a new house!

Izzie, I know it is a bother, but the pictures I saw of London and Surrey on the news here were just beautiful! They talked to several people disgusted that the tube wasn't running and one young man thrilled to death with the snow. And the last part of the segment said and "the worst is yet to come". What do they mean by that Izzie??

Izzie, I know it is a bother, but the pictures I saw of London and Surrey on the news here were just beautiful! Well the "worst is yet to come" is that they are forecasting alot more snow tonight 10 -12 inches but hopefully not here in London but further north. However they do expect it to get cold tonight here in London about -5 to -6 so all the snow and slush is going to freeze making getting to work tomorrow a nightmare.

We're not really prepared for snow like this as it doesn't happened very often. In fact the last time we had snow like this was 18 years ago

You are right Karen the pictures of central London, Parliment, Big Ben etc are really pretty

Wow Izzi, you are all over our weather reports so it must be bad. Josh must be thrilled with another snow day!!!!

Yea right He has no outgoings, gets all his board and lodgings and £75 per week for getting Ethan up and walking him to school at 8:30am 5 mornings a week and collecting him at 4:30 in the afternoons. He spends 2 -3 hours cleaning the house and doing household chores Monday to Friday and the rest is completely free time including all weekend.

So no I feel no sympathy at all for him having to work for a few more hours tomorrow.

When does he eat his Bon-Bons and watch soap operas?

Enjoy it! I know that the amount of snow needed to shut everything down really varies with what you get normally -- we are expecting 3-6 inches tomorrow and it won't affect anything! It's got to be over a foot of snow to do much in the city, and when we had a big blizzard a while back (over 2 feet of snow!), that closed things down to where I saw people using cross country skis down 79th Street. . .

Yep, it's all relative. It's a well known fact that here in California (where we have no weather), the first rainstorm of the season leads to a huge number of accidents because California drivers forget how to drive in the rain during the dry interval between May and October.

I get 27 days + bank holidays of which there are 8.

Wow. Here most employees are lucky to get 10 days - 15 after you've been somewhere for 5 years. I'm fortunate or unfortunate - I either have no vacation days, or unlimited - depending on the variations of work any given year.

Lets see if we can have a bit of oneupmanship, on the severity, so one foot of snow is my opening gambit, but I could go for the back end of a hurricane, on the Eastbound repo in 2005 off Cab San Lucas.

Any Tornado chasers out there???

I was once in a sandstorm. It was strong enough so I had to mask my face and couldn't see more than a couple of dozen feet ahead.

I'd pick that over a hurricane though.

I walked just a bit under 2 miles. It's a shame the world has changed so much that you are afraid to let your kids walk that far. Not to mention they are far to spoiled!!

The only thing that p***es me off about having a snow day is that I have to take it out of my annual leave, even though it wasn't my fault that I couldn't get to work. There were no trains, 90% of the tube network was suspended and whole of the London bus network was suspended

Sorry, we actually have to make up snow days at the end of the school year, it just extends our work days..........

Ethan's school just posted on their website that school is closed again tomorrow, so he has another snow day !!

Did read them but if I quote them all it will make a boring post from me.....(no change there then). You all picked up on it quickly, Its copy-write CRASH enterprises, .com, so I will now have to pay him commission. For those not on the E/bound repo last year he regularly posted seven questions. often about the most bazaar things, but it did stimulate some really goos answers between the odd pirate run.

Looks like they are popular so we could do more, in due course.

I often just have had the odd 'question of the day, -Just I know I use the word 'odd' deliberately.

Actually, you reminded me of the time we were at the beach in South Carolina (east coast) and a small tornado came down the beach one evening at about 5pm. When we went back out, roofs were ripped off, cars were overturned and all the chairs, etc. around the hotels were torn to bits and strewn all over. It was an incredible experience. (We hid in our hotel bathroom.)
