Why do they close the schools ??? How far do the kids have to come to get to school ??? I cna't imagine our school ever being closed here in London. In fact the only time I remember them closing schools was on 9/11 and 7/7

That's funny! I was wondering about that? When we get unsafe road conditions, they close the schools or delay their opening. Today we just got a few inches but it is now raining ice. Apparently a 30 minute commute is taking 2 hours. The local road crews want the schools closed so that they can clear the roads with little traffic. So what happens when you guys get snow?

London is like Manhattan -- just too easy to get around in, even with significant snow -- but out of the city, most people drive and it becomes dangerous . . .

Of course, when I was in England in Feb of 2005, there was an inch or so on the ground and everything seemed to shut down -- it was funny (to me) to see what a big deal snow was because you don't get a lot in the southern half of Britain . . .

It's a really quick trip, just Friday night to Sunday night. My DD22, is interviewing with a grad school in Miami, so we decided to go too! I'm not taking any days off to go, so it's just the weekend. We're supporting her if she goes there because we want to visit her a lot! Mostly, we'd like her to stay in Pennsylvania...so keep your fingers crossed!

No seriously the way our nutty education system is over here, especially in London, our schools are soooooooooooooo over subscribed that unless you live less than a 10 min walk from the school you just don't get in. Therefore come rain, snow or hail there really is no excuse not to be able to get to school. The exception is of course schools like Josh's which is a faith school and kids travel from all over to get there. If there's adverse weather the public transport system (buses and tubes) try their best to get in but I've never heard of the school ever closing because of the weather.

I could go either way! My oldest studied there for over a year AND WE LOVED GOING THERE TO VISIT!!

No the kids have to live really, really close to the school otherwise they don't get a place there as the majority of London school are so vastly oversubscribed !!!!!! Most teachers live very close to the school they teach in as well

Thank you, I think I finally understand what you're saying. Years ago, my area was really "country" and the schools were always closed for weather. Lately, b/c so many parents work, they try to avoid it at all costs, b/c parents really get mad when they have work and their kids are unsupervised at home so they have to take off at the last minute. I grew up in a big city, Philadelphia, and we were hardly ever off. (They have off today too.) Apparently the ice is really bad today.

We finally went there a few years ago to avoid the high cost of flying with the family to the Caribbean. The weather in Miami is pretty warm year round, so we went during Spring Break in April. WE LOVED IT! So a few years later we bought a small place there which Tara lived in while she was there. We just wanted to "get our foot through the door." Home values have dropped in FL, so it hasn't been a good investment. We rent it to year round residents at this point. If Tracy goes there, she would live in the apartment (and hopefully get a roommate.) We're hoping that one day, things will pick up, but unfortunately the prices are getting worse I think. I guess it would be a great time to move to Florida!

We have 3 B2B cruise booked right now. This one... the July 30th --8 night & Aug 7th --11 night med. We will have to see as the time gets closer... what ones we can truly afford.

I have a DS that will be 16 by the cruise and a DD that will be 13 by then.

It's snowing here but we need a blizzard to close things in the city -- it's just too easy for most people to walk or otherwise get to school, and the streets stay plowed in Manhattan.

That's what I miss about NY Julie. They seemed so much more prepared for the snow. Even in Rochester NY where we got a lot of snow, they only closed my school (U of R) once in 4 years.

Welcome!! We are also booked on the July30th. It just keeps getting better and better. We are ready to start intense planning now as we are looking at 2-3 inches of ICE and now it is supposed to get colder all day and SNOW on top of the ice..We always say in Kentucky, If you don't like the weather, wait a minute it will change.

Although, there is a chinese buffet near us and they have yummy frog's legs. DD & DH won't eat them.
