6am DME or layover with toddler

If I have the choice I would ALWAYS choose direct flight over layover. There's just too much stress and running the risk of missing the connecting flight. I could not imagine being trapped somewhere with my kids with nothing (typically you're not going to get your luggage back if you miss a connecting flight). I would have the essentials of course on hand in a carryon, but no thanks. I'll take piece of mind. Maybe when my kids are older and it will be less stress for me. I'm sure they would love getting stranded lol! What? Another hotel? An extra day of vacation???

It will be early December from Louisville to Orlando. The layover would be in BWI which is roughly as far north as we are currently, just further east. We have friends in that area who said weather isn't an issue that time of year. That proposed flight would get usthere 6 hours earlier and it seems like even just one delay would ruin that. Even worse, the layover would only be 45minutes!!! I just can't imagine trying to get off the plane with a toddler and right onto another one. We might even miss family boarding which would then be horrible trying to get on a plane finding at least two seats together. DH still thinks it will be fine. It's probably because we have never traveled with a child before so he just isn't getting it. I think I have been convinced otherwise.
at that time of year it will depend on where your connecting flight is coming from. I know it was years ago but our daughters' baton group had a New Years Day flight from Orlando canceled because of snow. plane was snowed in at Detroit and couldn't get to Orlando. this was a group of about 50 which made it hard to rebook the group. so yes it can happen, no plane means no flight
