....................

The only thing I can tell you is that ZERO dollars should come out of your pocket.
If they ask you to pay for the photos, ask if you get to keep the negatives and the proof sheet. If not, get out of that office.
Most infant and child modeling agencies will accept a set of decent photos taken at home in good light as a headshot to get started. After that, the agency should pay for the photos. Be aware too that some agencies ask you to send them about 20 photos a month of your baby or toddler since they grow so fast. (Usually it's done at the start of the month or whatever not over the course of the month) and that expense can add up.
Just go into with caution...There are a lot of people out there who are legit and more who are looking to just hustle you.

My DD was featured in Sears circulars in the Sunday papers when she was 2 years old which showed her in new fashions. She was in a total of three circulars and I just thought it should have been more since they took a million pictures of her in a million different outfits. It was a pain in the caboose getting her ready for the shoots (constantly changing into outfits and her crying), waiting for these professionals to show up, and missing work. DH nipped it and said forget it so she's never been in it again. We were referred by a family friend who is in the business who put it all together and it was legit. It is a very competitive business as is every other business so if you do decide to do it don't go in with all of your heart.

But if our DD wants to become an entertainer or a model when she becomes of age then she will have to do it on her own and we will then help her on her way. :)

It's a lot of time & there is a lot of competition. Once your child gets modeling work they can sometime book new jobs by their reputation or photos, but otherwise you have to take them to gosees where they get your name, take a picture and that's it.

I think you can send out snapshots of your 4 year old to the agents. If you need headshots later, you will have to pay for them yourself, but you should be able to go whereever you want.

Make sure it's legit, no money from you, and make sure it's something that your DD wants to do. It won't be a money making endeavor for a long, long time, considering how much time you will have to put into it. If it's something your daughter enjoys, it may be worth the time and work. It is work for a 4 year old, and she should have a say in whether she wants to work at that age. She may prefer to play, take dance lessons, join a sports team, or go to drama camp.

I've done a little basic research on this myself for my DD. From what I've learned, unless you live in a major metropolitan area, don't plan to get much work for her. I believe LA and NYC are the only markets that you could possibly get into a steady set of jobs.

In addition, this takes a lot of your time as well as hers. You'll have to sit and wait with her until it's time for her photo shoot to start and then you get to sit and wait until it's over. Also, there will be calls for possible jobs that you'll have to go to with little notice. Neither of these are very realistic if you're working unless your schedule is very flexible.

My sister knows a woman whose 3 daughters have done some modeling. The woman said the one advice she has is to judge whether or not your child is one that can play quietly while seated for long periods of time.

Good luck if you decide to go for this. I'm still thinking it might be a way to make some money for my DD's college fund...

well i paid an agency fee and my dtr has done 2 commercials and some print ads, the fee was only 250.00 and she has made all of that up since then, and i agree with the earlier posting we fly to NY and Ca mostly a little work here in chicago, but not most of it.
good luck to you

People who pay do sometimes get work and sometimes become very successful. It's just that there are agents and managers who will do the same thing without any upfront fee. And since it's very competetive, there are probably lots of people who paid the same $250 and got nothing out of it.

Did the fee include phtographs or inclusion in some kind of book?

yes pictures and a portfolio design, but i pay our air fare but we deduct it from the total cost
