6 year old little girl kicked off cheer squad

I sat on the board of our local rec league for over 12 years. Not for a minute do I believe this happened the way it's been presented. I believe she was asked to step down, but I'm sure there was far more to the story than just "they didn't like that we complained so they kicked her off". There had to have been other issues surrounding either the girl or the parents that would have made the board even suggest they leave and the rest of the board back it up.

I live in the area where this happened and the mother of the girl kicked off the squad and the coach were both on our local radio station this morning and it went down exactly like the article said. She was not asked to step down, they really did just kick her off. Sorry you don't believe that. :confused3 They made it sound like this is a very competitive team and they don't tolerate anyone who makes a fuss.

Yep hear it also.

Fox News. Shocker. :rolleyes1

I don't see why the source of the article matters:confused3 Delaney21 says it happened where she lives and that's the way it took place.

I'm not a prude, but I think it's an inappropriate cheer for 6 year olds. Aching backs, tight skirts and shaking their booties..... nice.

Did the parents know this going in? because if they did and were trying to buck the program then they should expect to be asked to leave. It is that way with some of the competitive gymnastics or dance teams or drum and bugle. You know going in it is their way or the high way. I don't get why people think everything should be changed to accommodate them anymore just because they don't like it. If it was in place before they joined then the team has the right to continue you don't have the right to make them change.

I will say so much for worrying how you are going to tell her Mom! I think broadcasting it across the country on TV is kinda going to do that for you, don't you think?. I also wonder if they are more concerned with getting their 15 minutes of fame or their little girls feelings.

Rather inappropriate cheer for 6 year olds. Personally, I think the parents that are OK with it and then kicked a little girl off the team should be removed from participating in sports.

What parent wants their 6 year old sexualized? That is creepy. Oooohhhh, i want my 6 year old seen as a piece of a.

I applaud the parents for standing up and being true to their morals. The cheer was inappropriate for little girls and if the other parents are okay with sexualizing their kids so be it, but call it what it is.

She's off the team- good enough!

Um…why do their backs ache? ;)

HAHA. That is what I said! That is the one part I found inappropriate.

My mind is simply not going the same places yours must. What's the deal with the aching back? PM me if it's not DIS public friendly.

I think the cheer is inappropriate for a 6-year old on just tight skirts and shaking bootys alone. And who the heck needs cheerleaders for 1st grade flag football. Way to establish those gender roles good and early.

I did that cheer when I was a kid!:rotfl: There is nothing sexual about it unless you make it so. It is just a cheerleader complaining about how tired they are from cheering. Hence their back hurts and their skirt is too tight. I don't think it is the entryway to the devil's playground. JMHO of course.

As for the parents I do not believe they simply complained about the one cheer. My guess is that they have done nothing but complain and the other parents have had enough.

As far as that particular cheer, it's been around for well over 20 years so I guess they didn't choose to remove it or even offer that as an option. :confused3

I have to say I agree with ya. So far, we only have one side of the story and that is the side of the "wronged". So, of course, it's gonna read like the "horrible other parents and kids were so mean!".

My guess (and I am just speculating) is that this family may have created issues with the team in the past and that this was sort of the straw that broke the camels back. It just happened to be over something "silly", but the rest of the team had had enough.

*edit* and I would like to hear from the whole rest of the team... not just 1 or 2 people.

My daughter is 7 and this is her first year cheering for flag football. Her squad does this cheer as a warm up / cool down fun cheer at practice. The whole cheer is so dumb it never occured to me to be offended by it. This is the way our girls do it. We live pretty close to where this happened so I am guessing they do pretty much the same way.

All the girls stand in a circle with one girl in the middle
squad: Peanut butter Reeces cup lets see XXX do her stuff
XXX: I can't
squad: why not?
XXX: because I can't
squad: why not?
XXX: because my back aches, my skirts too tight, my booty shakes from the left to the right (shake hips once left once right)
all: to the left to the left, to the right to the right (take 2 steps left, 2 steps right)
Meow meow to the cat (act like cat)
Aroof aroof to the dog (strange move that looks like they are doing the sprinkler)
repeat meowing and aroofing and moves on to the next girl

The first week or so of cheer my daughter did not want to do this cheer because she didn't like being the one in the middle. No big deal she just stood of to the side while they did it. Not sure why that wouldn't be an option for this girl but we are in a different league.

I don't think that cheer is appropriate at all. Especially for 6 year olds.

It would have been okay if the parents brought up the subject at the meeting and everyone voted whether or not to keep the cheer. Then the parents could have been given the option of letting their daughter take a break while they were doing the cheer, or pull her out altogether.

I kind of think that there is more going on here as well. It's not like it is the best cheer of all time - there are hundreds more they could have replaced it with.

Thanks for posting the whole thing. It strikes me as just silly and fun for the girls and only an adult looking for it would turn THAT into something sexual--but just the snippet presented in the article, taken out of context with the rest of the cheer, does seem to be pushing the edge of appropriate.

I agree that i would bet there have been other issues with this family (notice a special meeting had to be called to discuss their opposition to the cheer--seems a bit much to have a meeting just for that).

The way briannesmom recites it there is nothing wrong with the cheer except for the fact that has got to be the dumbest one I have ever heard.

People read waaaayyy too much into some of this stuff.

I agree that there has to be more going on than an objection to a cheer.

I agree to this post especially the part about the parents.

Based on some of the responses here I guess the Hokey Pokey is out as far you all go? I mean you do shake it all about!

Does that mean there are intelligent cheers? :lmao:

Add me to the list of DISers that did this cheer as a kid. (I'm 42)
It ever occured to me to think of it as sexual.:rotfl2:

Just remembered something funny. During the first week of cheer they were playing a game where all the girls are in a circle, one girl skips in the middle, stops and does a silly dance and the person they stopped in front of has to repeat it. The first line of the song they sing while doing this is "Little Sally Walker walkin down the street". I swore they were saying little street walker. I had to ask another Mom what the heck they were saying. Now that would be inappropriate.

THANK YOU. I'm wondering the same thing. I only had backaches from working too long. Am I doing something wrong?
