I would love a few suggestions on popular toys for 6 year old girls! My niece is having a birthday at the end of this month and I don't know what else to get her.

I got her a cool silicone slap watch (omg slap bracelets were so awesome in the 80s!) that I think she will love.

She likes Barbies, I know that...but I don't know what all she has (other than a ton of crap). I got her the Barbie Zoo Vet set for Christmas. She also loves horses but has a zillion horse toys so I would like to get her something different. I'm not opposed to getting more Barbie stuff, but she has enough of the dolls so I would only want to do maybe some outfits or something.

I really WANT to get her a LaLaLoopsy doll! Aren't they really popular??? I don't know if she would like it, and if I were to get one, which ones are the best? The ones with the hard heads or the all cloth ones? I think they are so adorable. Would she like it? She is very girly and loves her Barbie stuff...

I don't want to spend more than $30 or so because she doesn't take care of her stuff (neither does the rest of her family, it's no wonder she doesn't) and their toys get ruined all of the time because their Jack Russell Terrier chews on little accessories (like Barbie shoes, lol).

Any other "hot" toys? I got her Zoobles last year but they went to the bottom of her toy bins...and she never played with the ZhuZhu Pets we got for her, either!

I have a DGD who will be 6 in a few months. She enjoys any type of craft activity. i.e., last weekend she painted plastic forms that made transparent "stained glass" type of decoration. They were quite cheap at Michaels and Hobby Lobby. She also LOVES her Pandora bracelet. I got her a starter pink leather one and we add a bead for special occasions. She has 4 beads and charms now and it's something she'll have forever. I gave her the last one, a dangly one with ballet slippers, for her end of year dance recital.

Sticker Dolly Dressing books are a huge hit with that age. Also the Drawing, Doodling and Coloring Book for Girls is great paired with a set of new colored pencils. You can check them out here:

My DD is about to turn 6, and I can tell you what she likes, but that doesn't mean that your niece will like the same things, but it'll give you some ideas at least! :)

For her birthday she is getting the Rapunzel Animators Edition Collectors Doll from Disney, some Polly Pockets, a couple cute outfits from Gymboree and a pair of sparkly flip-flops. My sister bought her an American Girl dog with all of his travel accessories that she will love.

She loves (in no particular order): SHOES, clothes, american girl dolls and clothes/accessories (although probably not a good idea if your niece doesn't take care of her things), Polly Pockets, stuffed animals, crafts...and did I mention shoes? ;)

Good luck! It's always hard to know what to buy for extended family! :goodvibes

My DD just turned 7 and for her party she got a bunch of dolls - which is fine because she still loves them, but wow she has a LOT of dolls now! She really likes crafts, and loved the bead and friendship bracelet kits she got. She also got clothes from a few girls that she really liked (they went to the store Justice - which is very popular with that age group). One other thing not mentioned, is stuff for her hair. A big "poofy" headband can easily be $5 and some girls really like having fun stuff to put in their hair.

Good luck!

I would say pass on LaLaLoopsy..DD got one at Christmas and was done with it after a week, just not really that entertaining IMO

I think Pandora is a great idea as well, it will be something you can add to over the years! American Girl items are also great if she already has a doll or how about a gift card to Build a Bear?

My DD is 7 . Craft stuff, Monster High, Winx Club, anything Justice, anything peace sign. Things with the first initial of their name is popular as well.

For Lalaloopsy, I would say it may depend on if she has an older or younger sibling. DD would thing lalaloopsy is for babies, but her friends w younger siblings may not.

Do you live close enough to do something with her? Maybe take her to a tea party house for lunch, or to get her nails done, or to build a bear or chuck-e-cheese, or on a mini shopping spree?

Why not books? That's DD's favorite thing to get, and has been since she was 3ish. 6 is a great age for the Ramona books (the set of the first 4 is around $15 at my local Barnes & Noble, I think).

Other books that might intrigue her - Ivy & Bean (you can get those at Target), Lots of books about animals (DD loves the ones by National Geographic), etc. There are even early readers of Barbie and other cartoon characters. My DD especially loves non-fiction. She loved reading about the Titanic, 7 wonders, and animals.

Maybe I'm just the nerdy aunt, but we ALWAYS give books as gifts. For us, adding a book to a gift might add $2-5, but the sentiment is always there - reading is important. It opens up your mind to unlimited possibilities!

My daughter is turning 6 in September so I asked her what she wanted and she said, "Something girly." She is interested in make-up, jewelry, dress-up, stuff like that. There are a lot of inexpensive craft kits out there where kids can make something pretty, like friendship bracelets or bottle-cap jewelry or their own soap. Or cooking things-- like things to make cupcakes and have a tea party and stuff...

She got a Lalaloopsy doll for Christmas and I don't think she owns anything that she plays with less. No interest in it whatsoever.

As far as books go, GREAT for this age is Junie B. Jones. My daugher loves them.

Also, they start losing teeth around this age. Maybe a cute little tooth sack to put a tooth in when it goes under her pillow?

DD didn't like Junie B Jones, as she thought she was whiney. She also didn't like the Eloise books for the same reason, but loved the cartoon (she wasn't as whiney in the cartoon).

I don't think she's whiny at all. Spirited, maybe. Which is exactly like my DD and most of the girls in her class. They all love her.

How about a mix of a few educational games:

Scrambled States of America
Math Dice Junior
Blink

They each run about $8-$12 on Amazon and are lots of fun. Another fun game is Wok N Roll.

Also, my DD7 plays with her Calico Critters every. single. day. To do that right costs well over $30, though, and there are TONS of tiny little pieces. We're not that great at taking care of toys, either (I figure they're to be played with, not put in a museum), but she does a pretty good job with the Calico Critters stuff just because she loves them so much.

Oh, and I agree with PPs suggestion of taking her for lunch and a manicure. My DD has only been for one manicure but was soooo excited for it. She would love a day like that and you'd be making a great memory for her, instead of just another game/toy/book that will eventually go to the wayside.

Thanks for the great ideas!

Her mom told me they got her art/craft stuff for her birthday and that I should get her Barbie stuff or girlie stuff. I think I will pass on the LaLaLoopsy doll, it looks more like a 3-4 year old toy I think.

I love the friendship bracelet kit idea, though I am not sure if she can read any of the instructions or braid them. I will need to look at some of the kits. She just completed Kindergarten so she is just now learning how to read I think. Before going to school, I know she didn't even have certain words visually memorized like "dog", etc, so I'm hesitant to get her Ramona books (I loved them when I was about 7-9 I think) but I will check them out!

The manicure is a neat idea, I will think about that one. And, I like the suggestion of buying lots of hair accessories, I think she would like that!

Thank you all so much, I feel much better now!

Every girl is different. My DD7 absolutely loves her Lalaloopsy dolls. They are very hardy and cute, she really likes the little sisters and microfigurines. She still likes princesses, too, but girls in her class say she is too old for dolls--which is just so sad to me. 7 isn't old at all, and I don't mind if she takes her time growing up.

She also loves Hello Kitty, I'm pretty sure most girls like her. I got my DD the Zoobies Hello Kitty on QVC, it's a blanket and pillow in one. So cute! And her Squinkies get a lot of play time--she has the Barbie and princess ones. Maybe the Barbie Squinkies are the way to go? They don't take up much room and you can get them a car and house.

I also thought the Squinkies were cute, but any of the tiny toys get chewed up and/or swallowed by their dog or lost. :( It is really unfortunate that she nor her brother (almost 4) do not take care of their toys or other items. When I was little, we kept everything neatly organized by grouping, so all of our Barbie items were together, all of our Precious Places pieces were together (best toy EVER), etc.

I also loved the idea of starting a Pandora bracelet for her, but she is not mature enough yet to take good care of it. Maybe in a few years she might be ready for something really nice like that, I hope! I would love to have that special ongoing gift to share with her that she and I can add to every milestone & birthday.

I think I am just going to get her some new nailpolishes, nail decals, and hair accessories. I know she will love that, and it doesn't require her to really be careful with any of it.

You could also get her "play" make-up. My 6yo loves to put make up on. I buy her the E.L.F make up brand at Target. Most pieces are between $1-$3. We just got my niece 2 quad packs of eye shadow, one clear mascara, lipgloss, and a face stick (can be used for cheeks or lips) for her 9th bday. We added 2 bright colors of fingernail polish, all for under $8, including tax. It was a huge hit!

Taking her for a mani or pedi and make-up sounds like any "girly-girls" dream day. Heck--can I get this for my bday?;)

Thanks all! I have tons of ideas now for Christmas gifts & next year's birthday for her now. You guys are awesome. :)

Justice was having a huge sale today, 40% off of everything including sale/clearance prices, so I was able to get 4 necklaces for $12 (they were buy 2 get 2 free, plus 40% off). I think I will also get some play makeup, lipglosses or fruity body spray if I can't find cute nail decals. Surprisingly Justice didn't have any (just the plastic nails), and Target had ugly ones I thought. I haven't tried Walmart or Dollar Tree yet. I thought the little hair extensions at Justice were cute but I didn't know if she would like them (or if my sister-in-law would either).
