We just returned on Saturday from a week away!

This was our first trip to Universal Studios Florida. We have been wanting to visit for a while because of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter but did not have the opportunity until this year. My amazing parents gifted us a trip to Orlando for Christmas, complete with a stay at the Universal onsite resort, Cabana Bay Beach Resort. Our last visits to Orlando were 7 & 8 years ago and we stayed at off-site condos through my mom’s Interval International ownership points. This was also our first trip without Grandma and she was sorely missed!

CBBR was chosen because of the early entrance to Wizarding World every morning which is included in the Universal resorts. CBBR is one of their newer resorts, being only 2+ years old. It is not one of the resorts that includes Express pass for staying onsite as it is considered a value resort.

Sunday - We flew into Orlando International from Bradley International, Hartford, CT. Living in NH we find it so incredibly easy just to hop on 91 and get down to Hartford. Easy in and easy out. It is about 1.5 hours from home. It was easy to get through security, etc. I gave us plenty of time so we had time to grab some breakfast and then wait for our on-time flight to Orlando. It was a very full flight. Dear Husband (49) and younger daughter (9) sat together closer to the front and Older Daughter (13) and I (41) sat together over the wings. Both of my girls love flying and requested window seats. The flight was uneventful and we landed 30 minutes early in Orlando.

I had decided not to get a rental car this time as we were staying onsite at Universal and could use their transportation. I researched extensively and decided to try using Uber this trip. What a great decision! I requested an Uber XL once in the pickup tunnel (all Ubers needs to be met in the tunnel behind the rental car desks on the bottom floor) and we were quickly picked up (5 minutes) by a black Suburban and a wonderful driver. We asked if he could stop so we could get some cases of water. Uber doesn’t allow for this with extra time or payment but our driver was great and said he would do it anyway. We stopped at a grocery store and my husband ran in for two cases of water. We drink a lot of water and did not want to have to purchase expensive bottles from the hotel. We gave our driver an extra $20 tip for stopping. Uber is so easy to pay for with the app and we had great drivers every time we used it. Wonderful experience. We were then on our way to Cabana Bay.

Cabana Bay Beach Resort is, as I stated earlier, one of the newest resorts onsite. The newest one, Sapphire Falls, is right across the street. CBBR is a huge resort. Behind CBBR is the newest Universal park, Volcano Bay, which is currently under construction and will be a massive water park when it is done.

CBBR is a themed resort based on the 50’s and 60’s with all of it’s retro coolness. It is very colorful and modern looking. Very mid-century modern in design, which happens to be my favorite. They have classic cars parked out front (3 total) and only play classic music from the same era (think Elvis!!) in the lobby and huge diner seating area. The lobby is huge, open and colorful. The wait to check in was minimal and we were quickly checked in, given a map of the resort, told where to pick up the shuttle to the parks and one our way to our room.

We were given room 6736 on the 7th floor. We got off on the 7th floor and started walking towards our room… and kept walking. Holy walking, Batman! We just kept going. Our room was almost to the end of the hall, and took forever to get there. Like I said, CBBR is a huge resort!

Our room was on the small side with 2 queen sized beds, a small table and two chairs, a good sized LED Flat Screen Samsung tv, a bathroom with separate toilet/shower room, a mini-fridge inside the tv console and a view of the Volcano Bay construction with hundreds of workers. If you turned your head just right you could see the far end of the lazy river down below. Eventually, once construction is done, it will be cool to have a view of Volcano Bay, but it was rather noisy, even 7 floors up. Plus, they are desperately trying to get it finished before summer, so construction is going on 24/7. It really was incredible how quickly it was happening though. There was a lot of progress made in just the week that we were there.

That evening we had tickets for Blue Man Group at City Walk. As we did not have much time for dinner we went to the Bayliner Diner right in the hotel. The diner is a cafeteria style food court. There are different stations for food: Grab and go with drinks, pastries, snacks, etc, Sandwich area, pasta and pizza area, burger & grill area, & carving station with more elaborate meals. My husband and youngest daughter had a steak dish, older daughter had a grilled cheese and I had the Vegan stirfry with tofu. Steak was only ok as they overcooked it and my daughter did not like the sauce. Older daughter loved her grilled cheese. I liked my stirfry, the tofu was good and the coconut sauce was good but there were so many onions in the cous cous that it was practically inedible.

Blue Man Group. We took the shuttle to City Walk, which is very easy and only about 10 minutes away. We got off and went up the escalator and went through security. Security includes putting bags through an xray machine and metal detectors for people. Security guards also have wands for scanning those that set off the metal detectors.

We arrived at 5:30 for a 6:00 show after walking through City Walk (Blue Man Group is in a sound stage fairly close to the entrance to the Universal park. What a fantastic show! My husband and I saw the show 7 years ago, the last time we were in the area. It has been modified some but even the stuff we saw last time felt new and fresh because it is just so entertaining. I highly recommend the show and it is family friendly. My girls loved it!

After the show was done we walked over to the Toothsome Chocolate Emporium. This is the newest restaurant in the area and is themed in a SteamPunk style. Very cool. It looks like a factory. The Steampunk theme is followed throughout. The front area is retail with merchandise and a variety of ice cream, chocolates and desserts available for purchase. We just wanted dessert to take back with us. It looked very busy inside but we were actually helped pretty quickly. Daughter (9) got a chocolate covered marshmallow stick, Daughter (13) got a beautiful looking chocolate napoleon, I got a fancy looking chocolate raspberry dessert and husband got a chocolate/chocolate cupcake. We then took them back to the hotel with us and relaxed with our desserts while watching tv.

Next: Monday at Universal - President's Day with Express Passes!

Monday: Universal Parks Day

This was President’s Day and knowing that it was likely to be very busy at the park we had purchased Express Passes for today only. We got up at 6:00 and were on the first shuttle to the parks at 7:00. Islands of Adventure was the only park open for Early Admission during our week, and actually for the entire month of February. This was something that I was not happy about and continue to not be happy about. The early admission to Wizarding World was the primary reason we stayed onsite at Universal. To only have access to one section of Wizarding World for the entire week really was not worth it to us. There is only so much you can do in Hogsmeade. Having said that though, Forbidden Journey is our favorite Harry Potter ride and Dragon Challenge is my family’s favorite ride in the parks (not me, I do not like major thrill rides and do not do big roller coasters. I’m a Big Thunder Mountain Railroad kind of girl).

When the gates opened up right at 8:00 (I was told it might be earlier so we were there early) there was a mad dash, with some people running, towards the back of the park. We had to show our room keys on the way through Seussland and then proceeded to walk en masse towards Hogsmeade. My first glimpse of Hogsmeade was incredible though, it is very cool. We went straight back to Forbidden Journey while gawking at the castle. By the time we got there it said 15 minute wait and we waited about that. I love this ride! The details in the castle itself and in the queue are amazing! When you first get into the castle you need to get a locker (free for a certain time, paid for after) and put any belongings you have in the locker. Warning: IT is small! I had a Very Bradley backpack with me with a few things we would need for the day. I had to really manipulate it to get it into the locker and I banged the crap out of my arm and created a huge welt which turned into a nasty bruise (I do not bruise easily).

We had also wanted to get the girls their interactive wands at Ollivander’s that morning too but by the time we came out of Forbidden Journey the line was already really long. BUT, there was only an 8 minute wait for Dragon Challenge, so my husband took the girls on that while I waited for them on a bench outside the ride. They loved it!

Because we knew it was going to be a busy day we had purchased the Express Pass (not unlimited). We wanted to get as much bang for our buck as possible and went to every ride in both parks that accepted it… or as many as we could get to. After Hogsmeade we went towards Jurassic Park. The River Ride was closed for the entire duration of our trip for renovations. We loved the Reign of Kong. Spider Man was above average. Husband and girls went on Hulk and enjoyed it, we skipped the flume rides as we did not want to get wet and we skipped SeussLand, knowing we could do it on Wednesday or Thursday. We went back to Hogsmeade and got lunch at The Three Broomsticks. What a great quick serve restaurant! We were very happy with it! We got there right before 11:00 which was perfect timing. The lines were still short and the seating area still had plenty of seats. We got into line and ordered 2 Fish ‘n Chips (1 for husband, 1 for older daughter and I to share) and a kids Mac ‘n Cheese for younger daughter. We also got 2 Gillwaters (plain spring water but in cool bottles that are Harry Potter themed), a lemonade for me and a frozen Butterbeer for younger daughter. We received our food on a tray and were directed towards a seat. The fish ‘n chips were fantastic! The fish was super fresh tasting, the batter was not greasy, the fries were yummy and the tarter sauce was very good. We chowed! Younger daughter loved her Mac ‘n Cheese. I tasted it and it was kind of like Stouffer’s, so pretty good if you like that. She loved her Butterbeer. I also tasted this and it was yummy but too sweet for me. Essentially it is like a caramel flavored cream soda. My lemonade was too.. Chemically for me so I did not drink much as wished I had gotten a Gillywater. Three Broomsticks was a huge hit!

The husband and girls got on Dragon Challenge one more time and then we got on the Hogwart’s Express. Very cool! When we got to “London” (Universal Studios) we bypassed Diagon Alley as I knew we would return that night and it was crazy busy. We went right to Men In Black, which we enjoyed a lot. I like these kinds of rides because my daughter and I get so competitive! I kicked her butt by the way (shooting aliens and earn points). Then off to Simpson’s Land. We are huge fans and really wanted to go to Universal for the Simpson’s Ride when it first opened but did not get there. We were SO disappointed! What a suck ride. It made me feel so sick. My husband too and he loves thrill rides! After that we made our way towards Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem. The lines were super long at this point and we were so glad we had our Express passes. I don’t know if it is because I still felt yucky after the Simpson’s ride but I really hated Minion Mayhem. I felt just awful after. Shrek 4D was much better. We then went towards Rip Ride Rocket. There was NO way I was going on that thing! So the others did while I waited in line for drinks and a snack and then waited for them in the shade on the grass, while using my backpack as a pillow. We were tired and my feet and legs HURT by then. When the others got back from Rip Ride Rocket, which they enjoyed, we decided it was time to get back to the hotel and rest for a bit with the plans of returning that evening as the parks stayed open until 9:00 that night. It was about 2:00 by then. We got back on the shuttle and made the long walk back to our room. When we returned we realized our TV was not working at all. It had been acting up that morning and I could not get it to work but I had not tried very hard as I wanted to get to the parks. We called maintenance and they sent somebody up within 15 minutes. He determined that we needed a new tv and he said he would return with one. About 45 minutes later he returned with a tv and installed it. My husband and youngest were sleeping and slept right through it! Once it was installed we still could not use it for about 30 minutes while it set up. Around 5:30 everyone was ready to head back to the parks. We had snacked a little in the room (we had brought bars, chips and Cheeze-its) so we weren’t very hungry. We returned to Universal Studios and went right for The Mummy. UGH! I have told you before that I don’t really do thrill rides, right? I hated this thing! My family loved it though. Think roller coaster with big drops but inside. Yep. Never doing that one again! They loved it so much though they went on it again a few days later.

We then walked to Transformer and I really enjoyed this one. Again glad that we had express pass. So busy! By this time I was really ready to get my geek on and head to Diagon Alley. Oh how amazing and beautiful it is! The dragon that breathes fire above Gringotts is amazing! The theming is amazing! We walked through the shops, watched a little of Celestina and The Banshees (singing and dancing), bought candy (chocolate frogs, fudge flies, dark chocolate wand for me, jelly slugs, etc) and some Harry Potter merchandise (t-shirt, hat, etc) and then went to the Leaky Cauldron for dinner. SO glad we did! Fantastic! We ordered the Ploughman’s Platter for 4 which included 2 kinds of English cheese (an orange cheddar type and another that I was not sure of and I know my cheese, it was good, just different), bread, 2 Scotch Eggs (hardboiled egg inside sausage, my youngest loved these), beet apple salad that I liked, 2 kinds of pickles, rugged mustard, and spring mix salad with a nice light vinagrette. My husband also ordered a Fisherman’s Pie which was assorted seafood (salmon, shrimp and scallops) under mashed potatoes. This was yummy too as he shared. We also got more Gillywater and youngest daughter got another Butterbeer. They do not have any soda products in Wizarding World. I was very impressed by both Harry Potter themed restaurants and would happily go again. I also liked that the food was delivered to our table so we could wait while seated. We were given a candlestick with a number on top and the servers found us with our food. After we finished our food we decided to wander into shops more. We went into a wand shop near Ollivander’s (which still had a long line) and purchased interactive wands for the girls. Older daughter chose Tonks’s wand and younger chose Hermione’s (she’s a huge fan and wanted to collect as much Hermione merchandise as I would allow!). We wandered for a bit and figured out how to use the wands (not easy at first) and I wanted to get some ice cream. OH man!! The ice cream at Fortescue’s is so good! I was the only one who wanted any, so I went in by myself while everyone played with the wands. I ordered the Earl Gray and Lavender just because it was so different and I like trying new things. It was delicious! Creamy and rich with a lovely taste that I can’t really even describe. I got it in a waffle cone which was very fresh and yummy. We stood outside Fortescue’s and waited for the dragon to roar again. Right there, standing near him you can feel the heat coming from the flames!

Escape From Gringott’s, the only ride in Diagon Alley, had a huge wait when we arrived but my husband decided to check again to see if the wait time had gone down. By now it was about 8:45. He came back and said that the ride time was down to 15 minutes and we should try to get on. We stowed all of our gear and purchases in a locker right next door and the attendants encouraged us to get onto the ride. They said that right up to the minute until the park closes you can enter the ride. So glad we checked because we did not get back on the ride because of wait times the rest of the time we were there. Let me just say, the queue is beautiful! The goblins in the front of the bank are animatronic and very realistic. The chandeliers are gorgeous and huge! Our wait was not very long at all and we got onto the ride pretty quickly. I really liked parts of the ride, but I really do not like big drops and there is a BIG drop in this ride. Like, the car you are riding on tilts dramatically and just drops you… I scrunched up like a turtle and swore. Oops! I think I could do it again now that I know what to expect but I did not like it as much as I was hoping. I so wish they had a Harry Potter experience that is not so… intense! But I truly loved the experience in Diagon Alley, especially at night. So beautiful and so much to see and look it. The little details are amazing! Don’t miss going into Knockturn Alley!

We then went back through the park, which was pretty cool, as by then the park was closed and the streets were pretty deserted. Back on the shuttle and back to CBBR for a good night’s rest on those awesome mattresses! Busy day at Epcot tomorrow!

Next up: Pictures from Three Broomsticks and Leaky Cauldron and assorted Universal pics!

Tuesday - Epcot Day!

The last time we were in Orlando my youngest daughter was just a toddler. We wanted to focus on Universal this trip but also do two days at Disney so that she could experience it at an age when she could remember going. Plus, Epcot is my favorite park anywhere! ;)

We took an Uber to the park (fantastic experience!) and were let out near the bus/taxi area where drop offs are. We got to the park at about 8:50 and got right into line. Once we were through (I love how Disney has the plastic cards for tickets, I do not like the paper Universal tickets, but I had lanyards for them) we went straight to Test Track where there was already a 35 minute wait. We waited less though, about 25 minutes, designed our cars (my husband is a huge car geek, but he hated this) and got on the ride. The last time we rode this we loved it and it has since been refurbished. Still a great ride! We loved it! I had a Fastpass for Soarin’ but not until a little later, so we went over to Mission Space to see if we could get on and then I could cancel my Fastpass for later (it was not until 2 something and I could see if I could get something else). My daughters wanted to try the green side first and I don’t like spinning so I was leery about the orange side. There was NO wait for the green side, about 12 minutes for Orange, so we got right onto the ride on the green side. I think this ride is fun and my daughters thought it was ok, husband was bored. We then went over to Soarin’ to use our Fastpass and got there exactly on time. We waited about 10 minutes and I felt so bad for the people on Standby because by this time the wait was 70 minutes and there were no more Fastpasses for the day. This was my Tier 1 that I had chosen because I absolutely love this ride. The last time we rode it it was still Soarin’ over California. Now that it is Soarin’ Over The World I love it even more!!!!

We went over to Sunshine Seasons for lunch at about 10:50 and waited until 11:00 for the switch over to lunch.. I absolutely love this restaurant. The food is good, there are tons of choices for us (my oldest daughter and I eat Pescetarian and husband and youngest eat all meat, I also love diverse and unusual food). I do not have pictures of the food we got though.

Husband got a turkey sandwich with bacon and a cup of chili (he enjoyed this!). I got the Asian Noodle Salad with Seared Ahi Tuna (very good! I love me some Ahi!), Older daughter got some kind of cheese sandwich panini on foccacia that she enjoyed and younger daughter got the kids chicken leg meal, which she also enjoyed. As we were leaving it was really filling up so I’m glad we went so early.

Living on the Land was at 45 minutes by this time and I was not interested in waiting so long for that ride and figured we could try it later tonight. So we walked over to Spaceship Earth to use our Fastpasses. We could not believe the Fastpass line when we got there! It was so long and outside of the metal queue area. It appeared that a huge group had all gotten Fastpasses at the same time. The cast member at the Fastpass area said there must have been a screw up to let so many people get Fastpasses at the same time. But, we decided to wait. I enjoy this ride but my kids thought it was old and boring. I guess it is but I love the cheesiness of it and remember going on it as a kid so I will always love it. It broke down twice while we were on it, both for about 5 minutes a piece. I think this is a very common occurrence as I remember this happening last time we were there too, 7 years ago!

I switched out my fastpass for Mission Space for Nemo because the wait was 45 minutes but we still had about ½ an hour to wait until the time so we went into the aquarium part first and watched the manatees and dolphins, always one of our favorite things to do. Then we hopped on Nemo and got our pressed pennies on the way out. This is one of our favorite things to do at all of the parks, Disney and Universal. We try to find as many pressed coin machines as we can and have a storage booklet for them. The girls and I consider this our special thing we do together every time we go.

Time to head to the back of the park for the World Showcase, my favorite part of Epcot! We stopped at the Agent P Adventure booth on the way over the bridge and got my phone set up to do it. This was my older daughter’s favorite thing to do the entire trip! She absolutely loved it and had a blast with it! I loved how interactive it was and how it kept her busy even when I wanted to rest for a bit! ;) We walked through Canada and did her first adventure in the U.K. Then on to France. I love France!! We walked around for a bit while she started an adventure. My youngest wanted ice cream so I went with her while my husband went to the patisserie to get us some snacks. We got chocolate ice cream, which she let me try. OH MY GOODNESS! Some of the best, richest ice cream I have ever had!!! I want some now! I had sent my husband in to get me a cheese plate but forget to tell him to get a half baguette too. Big mistake. The cheese plate was pretty good (brie - good, goat cheese - good, blue cheese - gross but I never like Blue, muenster cheese absolutely disgusting and weird thin consistency) but it was just 4 pieces of cheese on a piece of lettuce. Needed that baguette. I still enjoyed the brie and goat though. We found a bench to sit on in some shade and rested for a bit while we ate the cheese, ice cream, ham sandwich for husband that he loved and croissant for older daughter, which she thought was good but not great (she loves croissants and eats them a lot).

Older daughter continued her Perry adventure and when she was done, and I could feel my feet again, we moved on to walk through the countries. My favorite is Japan so we headed there and strolled around for a bit and shopped in the store. OH MY HEAVEN! I love Japanese culture, food and animation so I was in there for about 45 minutes just drooling over everything. We each got a souvenir or something we wanted. I chose a new Bento Box in baby blue (I collect cool lunch containers and love Bentos), matching owl chopsticks and little and very cute sauce containers. I wanted to get something at the counter service restaurant but our dinner time at Chefs de France was coming up soon (in hindsight I should have at least gotten some miso soup). We continued on to Germany where older daughter did another adventure while I sat on a bench and people watched while husband and younger daughter explored.

It was then time to head back to France for our 6:00 reservation at Chefs de France. We do love French food and wanted to eat there last time but never got around to it. So this time my husband specifically asked to go there so I got a reservation. We arrived at 5:50 and was seated within 5 minutes.

We were seated in a very sunny, window filled room to the right of the restaurant. It is very tight quarters in there with tables very close to each other. We placed our drink orders and got them in a very short time and ordered. Younger daughter (an adventurous eater): Escargot and French Onion Soup. Husband: Escargot and Tenderloin steak. Older daughter: Pasta Au Gratin. Me: Salad Nicoise (I really do love my Ahi!) We also got a beautiful half baguette in a small white bag with delicious butter. Younger daughter loved the Escargot but did not like her soup (waiter took it off the bill, very nice!). Husband loved and ate everything. He had an au gratin potato side and I had the bite furthest away from his steak and it was delicious! Older daughter enjoyed her pasta au gratin but it was very rich and she only ate ¼ of it. I enjoyed the nicoise salad, especially the tuna, potatoes and green beans. All in all, a very nice meal, and very good, very quick service. Husband was very happy because he could get an Espresso Martini, his drink of choice as of late. Next time I want to try the tapas restaurant right on the lagoon in Morocco.

By this time it was dusk and we were very tired. We took the motor launch across the lagoon and wanted to go on a couple more rides before heading home. We hopped right onto Journey Into Imagination and then hopped right onto Living with The Land. We then left the park and used my app to call an Uber and went back to CBBR. We had a blast at Epcot but we really needed more time there because we did not get to every country in the World Showcase. Next time we plan on doing 2 days at Epcot!!

Glad you enjoyed Universal so much, the Potter areas are truly spectacular.........love the tee shirts, particularly your younger DD's.

Simpsons is an awful ride for making folks unwell........I'll never go back on it again. Shame you missed RRR......not as bad as it looks..........:rolleyes1

Although I don't think the drop in Gringotts is huge.........we find it really tame and short.......but, if you don't like drops I can see why that feels big.

Nice pictures too..........

What a great read!!

I felt like I was standing there with you as your descriptions were outstanding

You did not miss a thing when you shared your days at the darkside with us

Thanks

Many will know so much more about the parks and follow your lead in doing them

Enjoying your TR. Taking DD(13) to Universal in a couple weeks so very interested to read your experiences and thoughts with your girls.

My initial reaction to the Harry Potter areas was the same as yours - magnificent and the theming and details can't be beat! Thanks for the heads-up about the drop in Gringott's - it was closed the entire duration of our last visit so I have yet to experience it. Sounds like you are off to a great start on your vacation. Thanks for sharing with us and I am looking forward to reading more!

The mummy coaster is actually pretty tame IMO. No big drops at all, it just feels that way because of all the effects and being in the dark. I was actually able to see the tracks this time and really pay attention to the ride and it was not a very big coaster at all. What makes it feel so intense are the amazing effects.

I feel you on the motion sickness, but you didn't get motion sick on Forbidden Journey? That ride just kills me. I haven't even attempted the Simpsons and likely never will.

Love all the pics and reading along with the others. Add me to the list of those who will never ever set foot on The Simpson's Ride again. We all loved Mummy though! Can't wait to hear about the rest
