6 grade teacher ? missing school

6th grade teacher ?
DD will be in 6th grade next year so we believe we will plan vacations more around her school year days off. DH is not suppose to take off during summer. So we are looking at Veteran's day holiday linked with a teachers day off. My question, kids will get out at 2pm on Thursday having Friday off for teachers day (meet the teachers both Thursday nite and all day Friday) and will have Monday off for Veteran's day. I plan on them missing Tues/Wednesday. Back Thurs.

So can I pull her all day Thursday before when DD gets out at 2pm and us leave last flight Wednesday or better for her to be there that day? Her grade are normally As with 1 B. Your opinion?

Hi! 6th grade teacher here......

Curriculum moves fast in 6th grade, and math can be especially difficult. But I am the type of teacher that feels that family vacations are priceless, and cannot always happen in mid summer when its 110 degrees in Florida and crowded. It sounds like your child has good grades and is able to keep up with the material. Just give the teacher a month notice of missing school, and ask her/him to assign the work. Then remind the teacher about a week before(we forget sometimes). Ask the teacher if there is anything you can do to help, since you don't want to give her/him more work than necessary. Maybe offer to make photocopies or print off practice pages off the internet.

We took my DD who is in 6th grade this year out for a week. In our district the teachers aren't allowed to give assignments in advance when the child is on vacation, so she had to make it all up when we returned. She had a week to hand in all of the missed assignments, which she did. She is an A-B student and the missed school did effect her grades a little bit. I probably wouldn't do it again, but if there was no choice, I would. I don't think missing the time you've suggested will have a huge impact, but be prepared for TONS of makeup work when your daughter when you return. My daughter even had to get class notes from the teachers or friends as their notebooks are also part of their grades!

You are brave to consider it...my 6th grader gets all As, and I would not do it. I can barely help him with the homework when he's had class instruction, and I have a Masters degree! 6th grade is full of new concepts and a very high volume of homework. Our school frowns on missing days for vacation, and you may not get assignments in advance. Coming in basically a week behind, while the other kids have moved on to other concepts, is putting a big burden on even an A student.

My vote is for having her miss as little as possible...

As a mother of a 6th grader, I would not do it and as a result we are not going to Disney this year If we had a short school week and she would miss a day I would consider it. But as DD missed 2 days for the flu, she was playing catch up for a couple of weeks. Sometimes absences can't be helped, but at least in our school system is frowned upon.

We did it 5th and 8th grades and had no issues. DS is a good student and teachers were great.
Gave him the work they thought was important that he make up but not a lot of the filler work. Less work than when he was younger to make up!
Grades stayed up.
Now high school....no way. All honnors or AP classes and even one day out is huge. Do it while you still can. We love and miss January trips!

First, you would miss the opportunity for a parent/teacher meet up, unless you plan on rescheduling.

Second, I assume this will be your daughter's first year in middle school, which is a completely new experience compared to elementary school.

But it's only three days (or two? I can't tell), so it's not the end of the world.

Make sure to read your school's student handbook to find out the procedure for taking your kid out of school.

You will also have to be careful of any extra-curricular activities your daughter may start in 6th grade. Missing band/drama/sport/etc. practice may have implications for your child.

We have pulled my son every year since he has started school. This year he is in 5th grade, no issues. I'm starting to plan our next years trip when he is in 6th grade.

Check your policy. My son will miss the whole week.

I'm still not sure which we're going to do. DD will miss Tuesday/Wed that is what we have booked now. It is the Thursday prior that I'm undecided. Yes, we will miss the meet the teachers. Last year she missed 7 days for our trip but now, for them, we are shortening the trips. D

Have you asked your dd? My dd decided at the beginning of this year (6th grade also) that she would not go to disney. She is aware of what she would miss and doesn't want to take chances. She is on the honor roll.

Well I asked her and her brother, who will be in 4th grade. DS picked no makeup -please- last year the kid had to write in a journal only. When DS picked not going during the school year, DD hissed at him. So DD thinks OK to miss 2 to 3 days. I called a 6th grader last year, she shared 3 days would be fine! And she said some kids missed a whole week for hunting trips and then seemed to be fine - but that I take with a grain of salt -who shares they are doing bad in class. Hmmmmmmmmmm

I took my kids out for 4 days last Sept (K, 5th and 8th)and it was no problem. They are all really good students and the teachers and the school were great about it. We got all of the work before we left and they were able to finish it before the trip. When they went back to school both my 5th and 8th grader were ahead, as they hadn't completed as much work as was scheduled. It didn't affect their grades at all and having that vacation at such a beautiful quiet time of year was priceless to us. We LOVED Sept., but now with oldest DD in HS we are back to the summer again.

It's three days. I would take her out and not think twice about it. In fact, we did on our last trip. Our kids are in 7th, 4th, 3rd and 2nd. They were all fin and didn't really skip a beat at school. We also missed Parent/Teacher Conference Day, which was the day after Labor Day. That can easily be made up too. I mean the beginning of the year P/T conferences here last all of about 10 minutes anyway. You can come in on the teacher's planning period or after school one day and talk to them.
