On the plus side, you can use the beans in a recipe, and put the pod in a big bowl of white sugar. I LOVE vanilla sugar

Someone needs to tell the guys at McCormick that spices are no longer used as currency.

I know! Vanilla beans are crazy. NOt sure why though.

Vanilla beans are the fruit of a tropical orchid (the only orchid that we eat BTW). The flowers have to be pollinated BY HAND, the beans take 10 months to ripen, and then have to undergo about a year of further processing to develop the typical vanilla flavor. Then they have to be shipped to the US, since the majority of vanilla beans are grown in Madagascar, Indonesia, and Tahiti. That's why!
