My daughter has just started 5th grade and the homework is outragious. Last night she spent almost the entire night doing homework.:headache: Here is what she had last night... 1 page of math, 1 page of science, 4 pages of english, test to study for in vocab and english today and spelling and religion test to study for tomorrow. Plus she has to read 10 pages in her AR book every night. I just think that is tooooo much. I even called a parent in her class to find out if her daughter had as much homework and she did. I thought maybe Katelyn just wasn't being efficient enough to get her stuff done in class and that's not the case. I'd like to hear from all parents of 5th graders. Thanks!!

It depends upon the school which grade that you start getting bombarded with homework. My DS had it in 3rd grade. Then we moved over the summer and he had it again in 4th grade but his 5th grade was much lighter on the homework. :teacher:

Hang in there! It's tough for awhile.

Check with your district to see if they have a homework policy. Our district states how long a child can spend on homework each night according to their grade. A 5th grader (still in elementary school in my district) would only be allowed to spend 2 hours. After that, a note goes to the school from the parent stating the child worked for 2 hours and did not complete all the assignments. The child would not be penalized.

I'm sorry, I don't see tis as a problem. I personally send my sons to a private school because I feel our public school does not psh kids hard enough. This is sort of a pet peeve of mine. Our society encouages 10 yer olds to excel in sports and social arenas but discourages academic acheivement. "Smart" kids are often ridiculed. They often, however turn out to be the successful adults that people look up to. i truly believe there is no such thing as too much homework.

When you state religion test, does that mean you child is going to a private school? I know the homework my ds has always gotten from public school has been less that that of my friend's children who go to a Catholic school. At parent/student orientation the other night they stated there will be Math homework everynight but should not take more than 30 minutes to do. If it does to let the teacher know because the student may not be understanding what to do. They also sent home an answer key and math terms glossary packet for the year to help parents that either don't remember or don't know

He then also has to do 30 minutes of reading so homework is no more than 1 hour each evening. Thank goodness....I don't know what ds would do with all that homework and occasional extra cirricular activities...there be no time left to be a kid.

Isn't that pretty standard? That sounds like what my dd had in 4th last year, I am expecting the same this year.
The kids are given their vocab and spelling words at the beginning of the week. They all know they have one test on Thursday and one on Friday. They have plenty of time to study during the week. They also know at least a week in advance when a test in a particular subject will be, again giving them enough time throughout the week to study. I have no problem with that amount of homework for a 5th grade student. Of course my kids don't watch TV, use the computer or video games on school days so they have nothing else to do anyway :lmao:

DS10 just started 5th grade yesterday....so no homework yet.

I feel sorry for your kids. This gives them no time to be a kid. Kids spend all day in school, they need time to run and play in the evening. My child does go to a private school but not because I want them to spend their entire childhood doing homework. An hour is fine but the whole night is too much.

If I'm not mistaken, homework should average 30 minutes per subject at about the 5th grade level. It could also go a little longer. However, the teachers are supposed to be mindful and require no more than a maximum of 3hours of homework a night. This also might depend on the type of school your children attend.

DD9 is in fourth grade, and the homework policy is 10 minutes per grade (50 minutes for fourth grade, 60 minutes for fifth, ten minutes for kindergarten, etc.) plus 30 minutes of reading every night at all grade levels. Tonight, she had a story to write for English, social studies homework, and study for a spelling test (no math or science tonight - it's her first week). Our school also suggests specific days for testing in each subject so the kids only have one test per day - math on Tuesday, spelling on Friday, etc.

It sounds like your DD's school is about right for homework, but we don't have religion as a subject.
