I am going to participate in the 5K Run during Marathon weekend. My DH is doing the 1/2 Marathon. I am not a runner and have recently started getting ready for the 5K. I know that I am able to walk 3.1, but at this time I cannot run it - that's why I'm going to the gym on most days. I have read that many people run/walk the 5K, but I also ready that you have to keep a 15 minute/mile pace. How strongly is this enforced for the 5K? I understand the strictness of the rule for the 1/2 or marathon, but do you get "benched" during the 5K if your time should slip?

There is no time limit per se for the 5K....the clock was still running at 1:00 (1 hour) and stragglers were coming in. Not heard of anyone getting benched.

The pace for the half and full marathon is b/c those races require actual road closures and using main street usa in the magic kingdom. They want MK opened on time---and the roads to not be closed for too long.

The pace for that is actually 16:00...though training for 15:00 is recommended as the crowds will slow you down a bit until you get into the groove.

Thanks for the info! I can't believe that I'm even attempting this, but here goes. If anyone has any tips for beginners, I'm open to any advice!

I had a good training program from Runners world from a 5K. Personally I think it could be modified for a beginner--but it is set up for someone with some mileage already.

The frame work was 4 days---one of those intervals..one of those a "long" day. It was suggested that for a 5K..during training--to work past the 5K distance. This particular plan was for up to 10 miles...but anything between 4 and 6 miles as your last long day a week before the event would be good.

There is a book recommended on the training thread..."From Couch to 5K..." something like that. If you are a beginner--I'd recommend that book as it has worked for some of the ladies (and maybe men) who have tried it.

The simplest tip--start slow and work your way up!
