F we booked a 5E GTY, can we request that we are not upgraded?

Nope. I just tried this last week and was told that by accepting GTY I could make no requests regarding upgrades or anything else. I already knew that, but wanted to see what would happen if I asked anyway.

Darn....but thanks for the response! I suppose a balcony somewhere is better than no balcony!

Some people have been successful doing this. You can always call back and try another cast member.

DCL has a policy of NOT upgrading the 5E's for those who picked the cabin number to begin with (not GTY), right? Many would be Po'd to get an upgrade and lose the location and extended balcony they planned on. Sometimes on other lines I have noted "do not upgrade" on reservation but thought with extended balcony it would be obvious.

Actually it is NOT obvious to DCL why someone would choose a specific cabin. If you don't want to be upgraded from a cabin number that you picked definitely ask them to put a "do not upgrade" notation on your reservation.

People who have had 5E's with assigned numbers have been upgraded. Maybe not regularly but it has happened. Just as people with assigned cabins in other categories get upgraded from time to time.

We will see I just downgraded my 4C to a 5E GTY to save like 400 bucks - feels kinda cheap now if we end up with a 5A but smaller room.

Ugh, extended balcony cabins are pretty sought after, can't imagine someone that didn't pay GTY rate but selected cabin and paid for it months out would get bumped. I wouldn't even want a cat 4 with extra sq. ft. and lose bigger balcony and location.

And and upgrade to a 5 A, B or C with small balcony and no extra sq. ft. would really make me crazy. Guess I have to deal with the wait times and tell someone to add "do not upgrade" to my reservation. Or is there a way to note it online? I booked online myself.

Well the rub here is I would take a CAT 4 with 300 sq feet and be happy with it.

I had a cat 4 and cancelled it to take a chance on the 5E GTY.

It's really much more about those who booked a 5E and chose their stateroom number and then end up NOT going on the cruise at all.

How many of those are there vs how many 5E GTY's DCL sold on that same voyage. Tricky numbers. And probably very varied depending on which cruise and time of year.

Waiting for the PIF day for my cruise to pass so I can call back and see what's up then.

A regular GTY booking costs the same as a booking with an assigned cabin number. It is only the last minute *GT (IGT, OGT & VGT) bookings that have reduced rates and since you can't pick a specific category with those last minute rates it has no bearing.

I booked a 5E GTY for our Fantasy Halloween cruise. Once our PIF date passes should I check back to see if they have any rooms open from people who may have cancelled? I really don't care that much what category I may get above the 5E. If I get the 5E, then awesome, if not, I'll be stoked just to be on a boat with my family on vacation!!!

Also, I booked that 5E gty rate about 2 months ago and noticed the 5E gty popped back up yesterday again on the cruise. Does that mean someone else with a 5E cancelled?

I told my TA to put a 'do not upgrade except to concierge' - She laughed but said ok... That's the only reason I would move my cat 5E...

Probably. I just cancelled my 5E on the Aug 29, 2015 sailing when the rest of the fall 2015 dates oppended up. There were no 5E options left for that sailing, but now 5E GTY is an option.

I called back until someone was willing to put the request on my reservation. They reminded me with a GTY that there was no guarantee but at least they had it noted. We were not upgraded so apparently it worked.
