Even here across the pond my 8 year old is VERY moody!!

She is almost 9 now, and has a foul temper and can swing from angel to horror in seconds/

Can't wait for the teenage years!!!:p

I have an 8 1/2 year old dd. It seems to run in cycles. We can have a relatively smooth week or couple weeks and then it's like all heck breaks loose! She gets on the defensive about everything and if I say the sky is blue, she'll say it's green. I've found that if I try to tease her out of it she either gets in a better mood or spirals down further, so I have to know when to stop pushing! At times, if all else fails, I try to hug her and kiss her and then she will usually start laughing or at the very least a small smile. And then there are times (depending on my mood and how tired I am) that I just let her be and work things out on her own.

I already think the hormones are kicking in and it's going to be a very rough/rocky road with her because she is my deep thinking, emotional child who wants to independent in so many ways, but still wants the security of knowing I'm there for her. **SIGH** I will need the resolve to stay calm and ride out the storms that I know are coming.

Mine is almost 9, and his moods are becoming rather iffy as of late. I figure its a stage, hoping to move on to a new one very soon. :) He's always been a good natured kid, that I'm surprised when he is moody, it takes me off guard. But I guess he is starting to care about things more, hence the variety of moods.

My 8 yr old is my moodiest...she laughs the most and cries the most of anyone in the family.

I just had a "disagreement" with my DS8 this morning over eating his vitamin. I told him that if his butt left the chair at the breakfast table before the vitamin was gone, he couldn't bring his baseball glove to school today.

I guess that was asking too much  because a few minutes later; kid is gone - vitamin is not.

Every kid is different. Our DS13 was an extremely pleasant 8 yr-old. He only recently has begun to exhibit moody "teen-agedness"! Our DS8 has always been a little more mercurial. I'm just hoping the swings don't get more extreme when he becomes a teen-ager!

My grand niece was VERY moody at that age. I thought if she's that way now what in the world will she be like when she gets her... you know what???

Michael has a 9yo friend whose mood changes with the wind, also. I always ask him to check her mood BEFORE he asks her to come out and play... ... her mood usually gets all over him. He really has a hard time understanding these moods, I told him it's preparation for marriage! :teeth:

Michael has ONE mood and has always had it since birth. I am soooo glad of that!

I'm a third grade teacher - Imagine a class full of these moody creatures!

I think you folks are right on the money. There are times when SOME of the kids start to act like my pre-teen fifth grade students used to act when I taught fifth grade quite a few years ago. I will also say that a larger proportion of my current third graders are quite a bit bigger and taller than when I first taught third grade 24 years ago. Based on personal experience, I believe the researchers that say kids are maturing younger. My third graders today look and act quite a bit like my fifth graders of 20 years ago. (I've been bouncing back and forth between fifth and third grade through the years!)

8.5 here. sometimes moody, depressed, manic, overjoyed,
snotty, disconsolate, confident, unsure, sad, too cool

I just wait to see who I'm talking to before I start a conversation.
LOL!
very interesting!

As we speak my MOODY eight year old is hovering over my shoulder waiting for her turn on the computer.... perhaps she is forgetting whose computer it is!!!!!!!!! So glad to see that my daughter has company in the moody department. If she was old enough I would blame it on PMS.... that lasts every day!!.............P

My 9 year old third grader is MOODY!

And to the poster that talked about kids maturing early, I was just studying about this in my child development/psychology class just yesterday.

Due to a certain study (I can get you names if you wish), it is now noted that girls are starting puberty at aproximately 9 1/2 and boys 11 1/2. However, it can go earlier or later in some cases.

The factors that cause the early "puberty" are as follows:
Increased nutrition.. (kids are not malnourished, and have grown quicker)
Societal pressures (due to certain pressures on society, children do grow up faster.. think of fashion, songs)
Demographics are changing. (think of how consumer demographics used to be 13 and up. Now adverstisers are targeting the younger crowd)

I do think its harmones starting early for my son.
