We have ressies for dinner here next week!!YAY!!!. Anyway, I am a picky eater, and I am very picky about my veggies. They have to be cooked just so, or I won't eat them. Usually when we eat out, I don't eat the veggies. If I don't, will the server be all over me? I don't mind a little razzing, but I definatley don't want to be forced to eat what I don't want. Would I be better off ordering no veggies? Or would that get me into "trouble" too? TIA!!

Once when we were there my DH didn't eat his green beans on his plate. He played along after seeing the reaction other tables got. He made a white "I surrender" flag with a sugar packet and stuck it in the green beans. He had been nicknamed "Skippy" earlier in the meal and so the server picked up his plate and held it up for everyone and said, "Skippy here thinks he doesn't need to eat his veggie!" If I remember correctly, she tried to "airplane" a forkful into his mouth.

I have seen others have to stand in the corner and put their nose on the wall for other "dining offenses". It's all in good fun, and part of the experience. If you really don't want razzing for it, then I would check out the menu on allearsnet and find something without separate veggies. ;)

My husband doesn't eat veggies either. When he sees something like "served with seasonal vegetables", he asks just what season we are in. Usually, it' stuff he will not ever eat in his lifetime unless forced to under the threat of death. And then maybe even not.

At 50s (and all restaurants), he asks if he can substitute the veggiesfor something else. Fries or rice or something. Check the menu for options. Anything that appears on the menu can be substituted for. He does get a bit of ribbing about it by the server but nothing more than "oh, you should eat veggies" but it's very low keyed. And my husband has a reply. "I want to leave a clean plate and I won't if you put veggies on there."

I've never had to deal with this at '50s PTC, because I love veggies, and I don't mind a little ribbing from the server. But I've heard that you can let them know at check in that you don't care to participate in the "horseplay" with your server. They will let your server know, and you should be fine. :thumbsup2

I don't mind some razzing from the servers, I just don't want to be "forced" to eat what I don't want to. I think I will be fine... just some last minute worries!!!;)

Don't worry, they won't force you to eat them. You'll just get a bit of teasing, but that's it.

Have you ever tried to force a toddler to eat something they didn't want to eat? Believe me, if you don't want to eat something, there's no way anyone is going to make you.;)

You won't be foreced to eat the veggies. DH and I had lunch there in September and he had the fried chicken with Collard greens. He didn't like the collard and apparently put all of his bones over the greens. A couple minutes later, out comes our friendly waitress going to another table, hardly even looking at ours and screams out "Luke, you didn't think I'd notice you're hiding those greens under your chicken bones". It was extremely funny and made everyone laugh (him included). The funny part was I was sitting right infront of him and I didn't even notice what he did and the waitress did. It made it a memorable lunch. You'll have fun, don't worry about that.

And bes ure not to eat with your elbows on the table ;).

If you are just there to eat and not play the game, just tell the server than you aren't into playing games and prefer to be left alone. Or give them the evil eye when they start to pick up your fork or discuss you not getting dessert. This is what I hate about PTC.

This happened to me. I didn't eat my green beans and the server announced it to the entire room that I wasn't eating my veggie and did the "airplane" thing to me and made me eat a bite!

Are ya'll kidding about the razzing of the servers? I was going to add this to my list of places I wanted to eat when we go next October. I'm one who DOES NOT LIKE being the center of attention or attention drawn to my table.

Is this a bad choice, then?

I'm a very picky eater myself, so this combination could put me in a bad mood....lol.

It's certainly not my favorite place to eat.

While it's not necessarily my favorite place to eat either, I wouldn't dissuade someone from trying it. There can be a little horseplay with servers, but that is typically controlled by the diner, not the server. As I mentioned earlier, if you let them know when you arrive that you prefer not to "play", they'll honor that.

I guess the reasons I enjoy '50s PTC is that I like homestyle, comfort food, and the 1950's theme appeals to me. I have often said that I was born 30 years too late, and that I would have loved to be a teenager during the '50s. To me, it's a pretty neat theme restaurant, but to each his own. :)

If you're not interested in the attention, I wouldn't eat there. The whole reason for this restaurant is the way the servers treat you like family. My DH stays quiet and comes across standoffish, so they leave him alone. For myself, I enjoy playing along with them. I've never been forced or made to eat anything on my plate. They tried once to make my DD eat her green beans, but she looked like she was about to cry. So they stayed away. She was 4, I believe.

I think the "homestyle" food is much better at Liberty Tree Tavern. I thought the food was bad at 50s PTC.

My DH hates most vegetables, and refused to eat his green beans. The waitress just joked with him a little about not eating them, but mostly left him alone. She didn't make him the center of attention or anything dramatic like that.

We love the 50's PT Diner, the food is excellent, the decor is wonderful, and the service is excellent! :goodvibes We visited twice in September. It is not one big dining room, both times we were seated (family of three) at a corner bar type area, kind of like you would have in your kitchen, and there were just 3 or 4 different tables close by. We had an "Aunt" first and a "Mom" second. My husband ask for extra napkins and Auntie brought him a bib to put on. He is shy but actually ended up having a ball. The tables near you become your "cousins" and we got to all sign a card for, and sing happy birthday to, a young cousin celebrating. Mom gave us homework to do! It is a wonderful place to go, at least try it once! :) We did hear (in another section nearby) a man singing "I'm a little teapot" but did not witness it! Yes, you have to be a good sport... it is meant to be a place to have fun and not take offense! Just know to keep your elbows off the table, eat your veggies, and so... unless you don't want to ;) (the "scolding" is part of the fun)! By the way, when I ask our Aunt what "root vegetables" were (that was listed on the menu with my steak) she replied "Gross, I don't like them, get something else"! I substituted mashed potatos that were delicious both times we went! Our server, ecspecially our "Aunt" was wonderful, she was one of the few that got tipped in addition to the DDP gratuity!

Put me down for one of the 'I don't like veggies' crowd (but I usually eat some of the green beans at least).

I hide my plate under my napkin when I am done and haven't had any wisecraks yet. :) They always manage to catch the Boss with her elbows on the table.
