50's PT or Sci Fi for sensitive kids?

It's time to toughen them up! just kidding, but don't 5 yr olds have nightmares about everything?

We have been to 50s Prime Time twice for lunch in 2011 and 2010. I have not seen anyone get picked on unless you made it really clear you were asking for it and your table was a bit rowdy. DS6 was asked to set the table. We were all asked to keep our elbows off the table, and to put our walkie talkies (cell phones) away. We had a different server each time and they were both must have picked up that we might not want any over the top treatment. I would have liked more kidding around... so I guess you really got to communicate you want it by acting up at the table (whining, tattling, bang your silverware and say "We want food!" or something like that! We were really just looking to enjoy the food and decor.

50s Prime Time -- the food is very good here. Much better than some other choices in Hollywood Studios -- Mama Melrose or Hollywood and Vine (we will only go there for breakfast and the characters). The decor is cute for kids sitting in an old time kitchen with a TV that plays old family sitcoms like Dennis the Menace and Father Knows Best.

Sci-Fi Diner -- Been here three times. In 2011, the burgers were delicious. Milkshakes good too but not as good as 50s. There are movie clips on the screen with monsters, giant insects, etc... and it is dark inside (it's supposed to be night time at a movie drive-in). When there's something our DS might find scary (like Tower of Terror or Haunted Mansion), I just talk it up as silly, fun. I know the more I worry about him being scared/upset, the more likely he will. That might not work for you though...!

Honestly, we've done several eateries in HS...mostly we now avoid eating dinner in that park. Most resort restaurants offer better food, and we could care less about Fantasmic!

I might make an exception during the Christmas lights season.

I also really LOVE the Boardwalk area at night, so we often go to dinner over that way (anything except the Kouzzina place). If you aren't on DDP, there are some great places in the Swan and Dolphin.

If you have park hoppers, then hopping into the World Showcase is also easy.

If you are sure you want to pick between the 2 go for the 50's Just take your server aside and explain the situation. They will spend more time picking on you which the kids will like... You can stop the antics at 50's but you are stuck in the room with the movie screen for the entire meal.

I haven't been to either 50's Prime Time or Sci Fi. The theming at both looks great. My girls are shy, sensitive and scare easily. (Yeah, fun.) Anyway, if ODD gets 'picked on' at 50's PT she will loose it. So I thought, maybe Sci Fi will be better. Not sure about the movie clips, though. She had nightmares from watching some of 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.'

Anyone have any thoughts?

Hmm... well, the whole appeal of both restaurants is the "show". The food is... m'eh. If you're afraid the kids will flip out, head out of the Studios for a while to go to one of the nice restaurants at the Boardwalk or something.

If Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs scared your kid, then Sci Fi will, too. My kids are not scared of that movie, even the littlest one, and they've been exposed to MST3K a lot, since I'm a huge fan, so B-grade sci fi movies are just background noise to them at this point, lol.

Actually, that's not a bad idea. "MST3K" is available on Netflix instant, and the presentation is so exaggerated and silly, it may help demystify the SciFi cafe.

An interaction we just loved at PT was the little girl in a group next to us. The server did not pick on her at all, reserving everything for our table (sweeping, good natured stuff.) When their meal came, she served them and placed the plates with a smiling " no dessert unless you eat your veggies". The little girls face instantly crinkled and big sobs came out! (sorry for her, but the look on the faces of the waitress and parents were PRICELESS!!!)

Because when you are little, when a well-meaning adult says the phrase, "eat all your (blah) or you can't have dessert", you only hear, "YOU CANNOT HAVE DESSERT! EVER!" Yeah, little kids don't quite "get" the Prime Time Cafe.
