We are planning on dinner at the 50's Prime Time cafe for our trip in December. We've never been there and opinions seem to vary quite a bit on it. How has it been lately? Anything we should avoid? How has the service been? Any help would be appreciated!

This place is fun and a must dine for me at MGM. The food and service are great.

Another thumbs up for 50's. It's especially fun for baby boomers. I've tried most of the items on the menu and all are very good. We've always had wonderful service there.

The only thing I'd avoid is the dad's sundae. It was way more than 1 person could handle (we did a dinner using Silver Plan wishes there, so dessert was included). The cracker jack pieces were a nice touch, but a bit odd on a sundae. I swear that they put everything on it but the kitchen sink (yes, I know you can get that at Beaches and Cream). :teeth:

We ate there for the first time this summer. We loved it. The servers are great. They get after you for not eating all your food. Our waiter made my sister take an airplane bite because she did not eat all her vegetables. Our dad had to wear a Little Mermaid bib b/c he had his elbows on the table. It was a really fun place to eat, and we strongly recommend it! ::MickeyMo ::MinnieMo

ok, try it, see if your family likes it. But for taste, i think there's better at MGM (mama melrose). Family home cooking, come on, i have that everynight. Go there for desert, just a suggestion........ Your on vacation! Try something you wouldn't normally make at home, also, sci-fi dinner was good good too and fun for the kids.

Margiemc....we enjoyed Prime Time, but I will say this....the kids didn't care for it all that much.
Remember the theme of it....an American middle-class, suburban kitchen from the 1950's. Television shows from that era are playing....and everything seems "black and white."
For my wife and I (early 40's) it was great.....while we don't remember the 50's, our mid-60's childhood was close enough where we could really enjoy it.
But for our kids, it kind of went over their heads and they were a little bored.
Food was good...nothing great....I'd give it a "B." If we ever did go back, I'd probably do so without the kids.
As for Mama Melrose, that's our favorite at MGM hands down (kids, too!)
Have fun whatever you choose!!

I have to admit I've only eaten here and at Sci Fi at MGM. We LOVE the food here, though we've gotten dud's of waiters each time, so that stinks since that's part of the deal.

The themeing is great, esp if you've never been, and we really enjoy the food. I also think it's QUITE affordable because the portions are HUGE and we easily split meals, I barely finished my split meal. I don't think you'll be disappointed on the food.

I think people get disappointed because it's SO hyped up, you know? Like, my mom was disappointed with 'Ohana because it was so hyped up... her expectations were way too high and Ohanas couldnt top them. While we were thrilled with it, because we didn't have those expectations. Thats the price you pay for reading online boards all day long ;)

I say, give it a shot - it's good food, remember you can easily split, and you'll enjoy checking out the decor and watching the waiters goof off (Even if yours is a dud like ours was)

=)

We ate there this past August. We (me, DD16, DS 11, DD8) enjoyed the theme of the restaurant and our waitress was tons of fun. I got in "trouble" for putting my elbows on the table!! The food was OK, not outstanding. We had the Dads Sundae and the 4 of us couldn't finish it, but it sure was GOOD!!!

If I were you, I would give it a try. We had a good time.

LOL We go to Prime Time on our vacation because we eat out or order a lot - good Italian much of the time -- so we go for family home cooking as something we wouldn't normally have at a home...LOL Although, I do admit, when I do make a pot roast, I think mine is better than the one at Prime Time :p

Anyhow, we do enjoy Prime Time for the the theme-ing. Mam Melrose's looks like a lot of other restaurants around here.

I went with 2 of my girlfriends when we were 19. We had a great time, but that could have been the cute waiters who paid lots of attention to us. ;) :teeth:

I am taking my DH, DD(3), and MIL in October. I have already warned them about the elbows and things. I really think they will enjoy it since MIL and DH are both characters themselves. :)

Thanks to all! DH isn't too thrilled about the shenanigans, but DD7 wants to see him get hollered at for elbows on the table. I think we'll give it a try. We always try at least one new restaurant every time we go.

We ate there 2 years ago & will probably go back this time. The food was good & plenty of it. Our kids (then 2 & 4) had a blast. DH kept putting his elbows on the table, so they made him stand up & sing "I'm a little teapot". I can assure you, his elbows won't be on the table this time. It was all in fun, he was a little embarrassed, but their Bloody Mary helped him get through it;) . They don't pick on the kids but they do the adults - that makes it fun for kids. Just remember - be on your best behavior.

50s PT is fun...and worth a try. There are better spots and our kids (DS 8; DD 14) weren't overly thrilled, but it was a hoot.

You do have to keep your elbows off the table, eat all of your vegetables and you can't act like a brat - or you'll hear about it.

The meatloaf was great. I cleaned my plate, of course.

We go there every trip. The food isn't gourmet but it's nice to pe able to get meat loaf or pot roast after several days of "restaurant" food. If you're a "boomer" you'll spend 15 minutes looking at all the things that were in your house growing up. If you get a good server you'll have plenty of entertainment. If you have been to Whispering Canyon at WL you have some idea of the things that go on.

The food is good. But if you are used to home cooking, it might not be what you want while on vacation. We liked the food, but it was like "eating at home." If you don't like to be picked on (see posts above), you might find the CM annoying.

I was reading reviews on the Trip Reports forum, and no one had much good to say about Prime Time Cafe' !
They all said the food is so-so and that the servers do not get into character ! Very little if any, 85% of the postings were very disappointed.
I have a PS for Lunch for our upcoming trip and wonder if I should cancel. We have a group of 10ppl and thought it would be really fun ! Was not going there going there for the food, just for the whole show of it. Also, someone had mentioned kids don't get it, that's true, have of our would be kids....
AAHHHHHHHHH Frustrated & Confused........ANy Tips, Comments Feedback HELP !!! :(

MissUssH,
I wouldn't worry too much over it. If you ask today, you might get 20 people who liked it @ 5 that didn't & if you ask tomorrow, you'll get the opposite. We went, we did like it & we will go back during our Oct. trip. I would look on Deb's site www.allearsnet.com and check out her menus under the dining section. Just make sure that they serve food that you & your party like. Just remember, you can't please everybody all of the time & with 10 people, someone's bound not to like it - it's just one meal don't stress it.

We went to Sci-Fi last trip, DH & I both agreed we won't go back, but others here rave about it.
