50's Prime Time Café

We (DGF sunset_princess and I) went last year and I can honestly say that it was one of my favorite restaurants at WDW!

It was a toss-up between 50's and Sci-Fi and, after looking at the menu (DisBoards won't let me put the link up but you can find it at allears.net), we went with 50's for dinner.

One of the first things that you notice walking into the restaurant is that the ambiance and decor grabs you immediately - you are, from the outset, plunged into 1950's Americana - from the carpets to the tables to the snippets of TV on the huge, multi-coloured CRT sets in all manner of art-deco stylings and the wonderful staff!

Being called 'hun' and told to make sure we ate all our 'greens' made us both chuckle, the style of food and the presentation was exactly as we had expected and getting told off for making a mess made me laugh right out loud! There are stories about people being told to stand up against the wall for putting their elbows on the table or not finishing their meal that made me cringe initially but it's all in good fun and if you check out the pictures of it happening to grown men and women while their kids watch, you'll see everyone laughing about it (apart from 'Mom - the waitress' who is doing her very best to keep in character!).

Obviously you don't just go to a restaurant for the setting; you go to eat! But, trust me, the food is also fantastic! I had a steak and DGF had the fried chicken. We also had onion rings to start, and... desert (I forget which!). Everything was brilliant; the steak was cooked perfectly, the onion rings were full rings - not the beat up onion bits in batter - and were crunchy and delicious, the chicken was AMAZING (I'll be having it when we go this year :D) and the sides were great. The portions were spot-on and the milkshake that I had at the end of the meal was the best I'd had in WDW (vanilla FTW!)!

I'd recommend 50's to anyone and it's one of the places I'm looking forwards to eating in the most when we go in September!

What ever you do, though, I hope you have a great time!

Thanks for the positive review. I hv booked this for the first time as well. Hv done the sci fi and liked tht although found it a bit dark which i know is part of the ambience . Still enjoyed it though. I think its like any resturant until u hv tried it dont knock it. We all hv our own likes and dislikes but it looks cool and fun so go and enjoy.

thanks for replying, i eyed this place up on the last visit as it was too busy we couldn't get seated.
i'll add this to my list :)

We went last July for the first time and had a great time. The food was also very good! I do think that the interaction is very much determined by how good your server is. We had Quin who was brilliant - she was going to marry my 16 year old son!!

I love it here as well, the first time we went we didnt know what it was all about so were shocked :scared1:but loved it and the foodis great - but eat all your greens lol, plus the milkshakes are yummy :thumbsup2

another thumbs up from us - we loved it! The children really got a kick out of seeing mum and dad 'told off'!

We love 50's and it's now a must for us.....food was lovely but also loved the atmosphere.

My DS (12) was today, talking about what he was going to eat when we go in September......he said he's going to choose something that doesn't come with alot of veg because you have to eat all your veg before you are allowed dessert:rotfl:

We went last year when we were on DDP. I know Matt and Wayne went here last year after I told them how much fun it was!!!!!

I was 17, my brother was 15 and my sister 12 as well as my parents. We had it booked and went in and sat down watching the TV's. Once we were at the table, the fun began!!!

Well we knew what it was like and our server really did well. Patty will always be remembered by us!!
We went in, sat down and started playing up. Elbows on tables, slurping the drinks, not eating properly.
Well she had a field day! She put ketchup all over the tables so we couldnt put our elbows on the table, she made us wear hats from napkins which we still have now. She made us stand up to the wall holding sugar at our nose and then, sweep up the restaurant! I think we caused a bit of a stir as we had about 4 others included and joining in and ended up having a picture with us!!!!

As well as this being absolutely hilarious, the food is amazing. Just brilliant, typical American food and the desserts are good too!

I would recommend this restaurant to anyone and go in with the right attitude, can be one of the funniest nights you'll have!!!

50's Prime Time Cafe is one of mine and DS's favorites and a must-do each trip.

My son still gets a kick out of tattling on me - and me actually getting into trouble. I've gotten the 'airplane treatement' for not eating my collard greens. I've also been scolded for leaving the table (restroom) without permission and then was questioned as to whether I washed my hands (right down to being asked the color of the soap and whether it was liquid or powder -- thank goodness, I had washed! :lmao:)

We love the fried chicken, pot roast, meatloaf - heck, anything we've eaten there. Especially the milkshakes!

I also like looking around the memorabilia and seeing things from my grandparents' or parents' homes.

We liked Sci-Fi's ambience as well. But have had better meals (dinner). We would try it for lunch if the menu was different.

Enjoy!

Glad to hear the 50's still has good reviews - it is 7 years since we have visited and we are visiting again in October - sure our 6 year old will love it.

The best thing was the PBJ malties - they were to die for.

we all had a ball in this restaurant and is in our ADR`S for this year as well, and we all just loved the peanut butter milk shakes as well as the pot roast:cool1::cool1:

After so many thumbs up I fell bad giving thumbs down. First year we went interaction was great. Second time nothing just brought the food and went, food was okay but not great. Just remember your server may have a bad day and not interact with you. Although it could be we were a party of 6 so the gratuity was guaranteed without the need to earn it. :confused3

They still need to earn it or you should talk to the restaurant manager, they should at least remove the service charge for bad service, just because its automatically included doesn't mean you can't get it removed.
We will be a party of 6 in August for the first time, I expect the usual excellent service or I will have to have words.

My family loves the 50's Prime Time. On my 2009 trip, my mom got in trouble for not eating her vegetables and had to do the airplane treatment. That same trip, my grandma got in trouble for being late to the table (my grandma had been in the bathroom when we got seated). Also, my friend's mom got her phone taken away because she had been "googling". The last time I went, a father and a daughter got in trouble for sassing their waitress. The father had to sing I'm a Little Teapot.

Love it. Wouldn't miss it. Food is good and the atmosphere is great.

Of course, I like it when my waitstaff yells at me.
