Hi everyone. How 'mean' or 'jokey' are the cousin CM's at 50's Prime Time? I have always wanted to try this place (I hear great things about the allergy chicken tenders!!), but I am coming to realize that I have a sort of 'social anxiety' when it comes to being in restaurants. Anyone with social phobia or generalized anxiety eaten there before?

My son has very high anxiety. This is his favorite restaurant. Once he was bothered by the teasing and cried to the point of hyperventilation. They weren't mean at all to him. The server said that he needed to put his game away or she'd take it from him. He lost it. Dh took him out of the restaurant to regroup, and the server apologized perfusely to me.

He usually does great with the teasing and joking there. He is so rules based, that he loves making us follow the no elbows on the table and other rules.

My suggestion would be to note it on your reservation that you don't want any joking or teasing. You can see plenty of that at the tables around you.

So funny stumbling upon this post...I just canceled an ADR for here when I read more about the whole schtick with the waiters and waitresses.

I don't know if it's because of my anxiety disorder, but I just know that our family would not enjoy this. I didn't enjoy Whispering Canyon either. I enjoy themed restaurants (like characters, stuff to look at, shows) but not themed service if that makes sense.

Anyway, long story long, not sure why I canceled it, but I knew it wasn't for us.

I just asked them not to do it to me, and they didn't. I liked the food and they were very nice to give me smaller portions since I was on meds that decreased my appetite.

My hubby and I almost did not go here because of the shctick, but made reservations because we wanted to try the peanut butter and jelly milkshakes.

The first time we went, the waitress played it up just a little and we enjoyed our milkshakes so much that we wanted to come back.

The second time, the waiter was full into his role and we had such a good time and laughed so much! Surprised us at how much we enjoyed it. We will definitely make reservations next trip.

I say go and try something new, if you do not enjoy it, do not go back!

Okay, so I give you that advice, now you can try and convince me to try communal seating at Biergarten!

LOL we haven't done THAT either! :rotfl2:

DH and I went in April and after the 'rules' our waitress didn't really do much teasing, which was fine with us. We only got told off for not cleaning our plates. I don't know if we weren't doing anything to get in trouble or she sensed we weren't that in to it all. The food was good though and we are going back in October.

I've come to realize this is one of my favorite WDW restaurants - good food and lots of fun. The last time we were there the people at the table next to us requested that the waitress not be in character. She had no problem with that and left them alone.

I haven't eaten there myself, but from what I've heard it can vary a lot depending on the individual server. Maybe someone in your party could mention it when you check in?

I think they can tell whether you're into it or ot as well. I had a lot of anxiety about dining there, but our server did some light joking and that was it. We had a delightful time watching the action around us and really enjoyed the food.

I think the servers are very well tuned into their patrons. I've eaten there with a crowd who was really into it and the waitress played her role to the hilt and was loud with lots of jokes and harrassment. I've also eaten there as a couple or even solo and have been left completely alone, other than the original spiel they do when you are first seated (calling you sister or brother, mom's in the kitchen cooking, set the table, etc). It's one of the places I don't mind going even solo. I can watch the old TV shows and watch the waitresses doing their spiel at the other tables, while I eat a good meal in peace. I've never had a problem with the server knowing whether I wanted to enjoy the action or be left alone. They usually follow the guest's lead.

We've eaten at both Prime Time and had a great time. We did tell them ahead of time when we checked in that we had one member of our party (DD) we didn't know how she would react and asked for her not to be teased - one of our party also told the server.
They left DD alone, but she enjoyed watching her aunt and grandmas get 'scolded' by our new 'cousin'.

We eat at Biergarten every trip now and have had pretty good experience. Our first ones were when we had a party of 8, so we took up the whole table. We have since then eaten with as few as 3, so the majority of the table was strangers.
Where people sit and ho is allowed to sit where are big issues for DD. But, she knew the rules ahead of time and we made sure to tell the person when we checked in that we needed DD on the outside with one of us sitting next to her and the other across from her. That worked well.
Each table on the entry level has one short side to the railing nd the other short side to the corridor. The rail side might work better for one people.

Since it's a buffet, you are not passing food back and forth like if it was bing served family style.
You could get tablemates who keep totally to themselves or, we have had some who are quite friendly. That's the part that you don't know.

If it's not busy, it is possible that you might end up seated with just your party - especially if your group almost fills the table and asks to be alone. No guarantees though and you could end up with a group being added to our table after you re seated.
The entertainment at Biergarten is very good. The polka band is good and most people there enjoy the music. It is loud though, so if someone in your party has issues with sound, they may want to wear their earphones/sound deadening earmuffs.
We've also been at tables where one child was engrossed in handheld video games. I assumed he had some need to withdraw into a comfort zone.

Thanks Sue for the Biergarten tips. We are empty nesters so will probably be just the two of us on the next trip so will def plan on being with strangers if we go. Trying to push myself out of my comfort zone so I think I might try it!

I love 50s - we took our 2 yo granddaughter there last spring and she spilled a little bit of her drink. The waitress gave her a cloth and told her she had to clean it up. She got a serious look on her face and cleaned away. I laughed so hard I almost fell over.

I know everyone is different and reacts differently to these situations, but the wait staff wants you to have fun here. They will treat you however you want them to if you ask. I hope you have a great time here. The food really is good. Another underrated place we like is Trails End in Fort Wilderness. If you want to take a short boat ride from MK, I highly recommend it.

Biergarden communal seating is harder to convince people to try. We like it there but haven't eaten there in quite some time. IMO there are better choices, even though the beer is good. I love beer.

We don't like to play around and we eat at 50's every trip. When we check in I just tell them we don't want to play and we've never had an issue except a waitress who sat with us for awhile because she was tired of working ;) We've also eaten at Whispering Canyon a number of times and had no problem getting a regular style service when we have asked for it.

Not the OP, but this thread is really helpful, I was having a few similar reservations about these places.

I've always been nervous about it too, but have decided to try it this visit. Honestly, our kids will be fine with it, it's dh and I that don't like it, and I think if we are just in a good mood and go with it, it won't be as bad as we imagine. We've had fun with unexpectedly interactive characters before.

Re Biergarten...I think the only reason we don't mind going there is that we are a family of 10, and they always give us our own table anyway. LOL

Happy planning everyone...we'll be at WDW in two weeks, and then I can report back on both places.

During our two trips we ate here several times. Only once did we have a really fun, fun, fun :rotfl: waitress that really got into it, otherwise there were just small things (kind of like how an elderly aunt might come across). The exceptional waitress was a hoot... when DH ask for extra napkins she brought him (and put on, LOL) a plastic kiddie bib, she had us sing, she teased, ect... ALL waiters/waitresses that I observed were not mean nor was their "teasing" or antics "over the top". It is a family favorite and one that requires multiple ADR's per trip! :thumbsup2

You don't even need to note it on your reservation. You can just tell them when they seat you and your server will be respectful of your request.
We still eat here but it is NOwhere near as fun as it used to be!!! They have toned down the 'picking' and 'banter' to the point that there is very little the servers are allowed to do. It's really quite sad and it's all due to guest complaints!!! To me, it's one of those things that if you don't like it, all you have to do is ask the CMs to stop and they will!! But REALLY??? Must you whine to Disney so that the rest of us who enjoy it now have lost out??? We are friends with a CM who has worked there for years now, and she told us one CM was fired because a guest complained about her tapping their child on the head with a cardboard menu!! Seriously??!! The guest flipped out over it. The CM 'tapped' the kid! There were witnesses that were interviewed, both guests and other CMs. Eventually, the CM was reinstated to their job. But people were getting carried away with complaining there....so basically management has toned back the whole 'schtick' of the restaurant! Makes me both sad and mad! :(

That's too bad about the CM, but glad to hear they were reinstated.
Overall from your comment, it sounds like customers weren't really liking the schtick. Even the ones without anxiety disorders ;)
