50mm f/1.4 - should I?

I agree Kevin - that is why I used my 50mm f/1.8 - but that is really the ONLY time I ever use it. I am glad I have it - but I personally wouldn't spend more $ on a prime lens than I did on that one. I have no doubts there are many many people who love their primes - and that is perfectly fine. I am just not one of them.

Having a super fast lens that I would only use a rare few times a year is not worth spending more than that 75.00 I did.

Well, higher-priced primes give higher-quality results, to be fair. And a wider prime (like 30-35mm) can be a very useful focal length - and usually sharp enough that you can get away with doing a bit of cropping if need be. Most of the big manufacturers have 35mm F2.0 lenses which are fairly affordable and seem to all be rated highly. Not as fast as an F1.4, but still pretty fast.

But hey, like you said, it's fine if you do or don't love primes.
