MAD HATTER CAKE???!!!

My husband was ordering a cake for my 40th birthday He told the woman he was speaking with that he wanted a 2 tier cake for my daughter and I. She said the Mad Hatter (topsy turvy) cakes start at $500. Does that seem right?

Absolutely. Average two-tier cakes would be expensive anywhere - throw in custom shapes and having to spend more time on stability and that price doesn't surprise me at all.

I have no idea, but I REALLY want to see some photos and get a taste review if you do get it. Oh, and Happy happy Birthday!

At Disney that's a bargain. We spent $200 on a single tier 10" round cake for our sons first birthday and it just had white chocolate characters on it with a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse theme.

Wow, that is expensive. Sounds like a fun thing to do. I wanted to order something special for one of our birthdays, but just never got around to it. I absolutely love the cake thread.

This seems to be not much more than what one of the better custom cakes in the nation charges (Charm City Cakes in Baltimore), so that seems reasonable. You would pay about $400 in a major city for that. I went with a Mini-Cake for Mom's 75 and it was $50-60 with tax and Tip. Awesome cake from the Contemporary Hotel Bakery.

At Disney? Sure.

At any private cake baker near a big city.

I married in 2003 and got a big but basic (and incredibly delicious and totally from scratch) cake I used for my birthday from our wedding cake lady. Buttercream, not fondant, and a simple shape. And it was $100. And worth it.

Now, would I go with a cake from Disney? Nope but for lack of quality, not bc of price. I'd find a great cake bakery in town and go with them. The volume of Disney, even with the fancy cakes, means they aren't going to be the quality I want in an expensive cake.

We've bought three custom cakes from Disney. One was a pirate cake for my grandsons birthday. Adorable but not the best tasting cake.

One was a tinkerbelle cake I got for my adult daughter. Good cake, but the "custom tinkerbelle", which I was promised would be "spectacular" was a plastic cake topper. The cake as I said though, was the best cake I'd had at Disney.

The third cake was one my daughter got her boyfriend. A small square one tiered cake with buttercream frosting. Cute, masculine, but the cake was very dry. They ranged in price from $100 to $275 for the "custom tinkerbelle cake".

I know in the future I will do mini cakes. Castle types or with Mickey decorations. I like the idea of a celebratory cake, but would prefer a lower price. Point.

I've done the custom cakes before. I spent $175 and had the castle on it and amazing roses.
