Youngest DS, who is a sophmore and STILL growing;) , brought home information for class rings Friday.
I was tied up with getting the new computer up and running so I just now opened the envelope to read the information.
The rings are, on an average, $500!
I don't think I want to order one for that price. Will he be a social outcast if I don't?:scared:
Would you pay that price for a high school ring?

TC:cool1:

Mine was about $400, the cheapest of the line too. (I have no idea where that ring is now. And I graduated in 05.)

If you don't want to order from the school go to Wal Mart and order one. Much cheaper and while there are differences I've never heard a lot of people say the quality was much to argue about.

i never got one because they were so expensive. DH2B has one, but he rarely ever wears it. and i can always buy one if i ever REALLY want to have one. they have some at Wal*Mart for cheaper....but they're still around $200 or so.

My class ring was the least expensive in the brochure ($70), but it served its purpose. It had my initials engraved on the inside with the school mascot, name, academic logo, and graduation year (2003) on the sides next to the stone (a garnet). My parents bought it for me as a present, and they didn't want to pay $100s of dollars for one. I wore it everyday in high school, but I don't recall wearing it once since I started college. It sits in my jewelry box, which is what would have happened even if it cost $500 as well. No one in my class really seemed to care what kind of ring everyone was wearing or how much it cost.

Mine cost about $250 back in 1995 when I bought it through Jostens (the company our school used). I wore mine daily until a few years back. It's in my jewelry box today. I didn't go with 14 carret gold but 10 carret, and didn't go with the faciest design. It has my two sorts, school name, my name and year (97). I would definately sho around or look at other options in the sales book. As I recall there were special pricing that ran at various times of the year.

Our local Jewlery stores run local high school class rings specials. Also the Rhodarium (sp) sorry, is under $200 For what any of my kids wore them it was worth it. Especially when it went around some girls neck not knowing if it was or did come back.

Also a second choice is waiting as I did to sophmore year and I worked to pitch in for my ring, a 10 carat back in 1970. (about $80)

My class ring cost about $200. I graduated in '89 so I bought probably in '88. I guess it depends on the kid if he will actually wear it or not. I don't know if kids still do this or not, but back in the day it was popular for a boy to give his girlfriend his class ring while they were dating. I know how petty this is going to sound, but when I was in school I dated a guy who was really poor and couldn't afford a class ring. It always bothered me because I didn't have his class ring to wear. Yes I know how that sounds almost twenty years later.

I just about fell over when DS brought his home too. I told him we would get it as his christmas present and he told us he would think about it.

When he brought the brochure home, he was really, really wanting one, but after all of his friends had one for a few months they seemed to lose interest in them and he didn't want one anymore.

See if he would wait a few months and if he is still interested then.

my DS high school ring was around $400 (3 years ago) - and that was for a "basic" ring

i paid $65 for my high school ring - graduated in 1975

DD just ordered hers--it was $480 and was near the bottom of the price range. Actually, I'd offered to buy it for her but was a little surprised when her dad volunteered to get it for her. Hey, go right ahead!

I was shocked until I realized mine was about $130 back in 1981 so I guess it makes sense. ;)

My son and his friends all went to Walmart and ordered theirs- $99!

They decided that the schools were too much money and since a girl would probably have it anyway, they were not asking parents to spend that.:cool1:

They are actually quite nice, and most of the boys don't even wear them - The girlfriends do though.

I told him, if I am spending over $400 on a ring, it will be one he can wear forever. Not one he wears until college (because then it's not cool)

I never got a high school ring. I went to one high school up until my senior year and then we moved to NY so I was at a different school. I have my DH's ring in my jewelery box though - I wore it when we started dating and it just sort of became "mine".

DD did not get one. We discussed it and decided against it. I had one when I was in high school. Never wore it again after high school. DD didn't think she would wear after high school either so we decided to put the money toward a nice ring that she could and probably would wear forever.

I've heard of a lot of people doing this. I think it has more meaning for the wearer - and like you said it's something that can be worn forever.

We bought ours in '89 (class of '92). I didn't like any of the styles offered by the company that the school chose, so I went to a jeweler and had one made. It was one of those fancy ones that didn't really look like a class ring unless you looked closely at it. I paid $110 for it.

I put the order papers out of sight when my DS17 (now) left them on the table last year. I mentioned that I had seen them and that I thought the prices were outrageous and then I never mentioned them again. I think my DS just knew it wasn't going to happen. For that price, they could get laptop for college or pay 1/2 years insurance for their first car, but a piece of jewelry? I think not:rotfl2: As for social stigma, this just falls in line with many things from the time he was born that separate us from the Jones' -- not a bad thing to learn early in life if you ask me!

What the heck is a class ring and why would you spend $500 on it?

this will give you examples:
http://www.jostens.com/

Mine was over $300.. I love it.. than stupid me gave it to a guy I was dating and never got it back:sad2:

My son is a freshman and got a flyer home about Jostens coming to his school... one month into his freshman year I am not getting a ring.

My sister is a senior this year and is ordering her ring this week.
